To think most (or lots) of teachers are secretly quite wild?

I’ve been a teacher for twenty three years, almost all the younger teachers-22-50 have been pretty wild on nights out and many of the younger ones-20’s have very crazy social lives.
Has anyone else had experience of this?
I think most people probably think we’re quite boring…

@HamBagelNoCheese Yes, possibly this 🤔 I’ve also heard it about the medical profession too, but have no experience of that.

Some are. Some aren't.

It's a general cross respresentation of life imo.

But the lunchtimes in our staff room can be hilarious - especially Mondays or after half term 😂😂 when everyone is catching up.

Aladdinzane · 26/06/2024 20:22

I've been teaching for 30 years.

The stories I could tell about the early years are a lot wilder than some of the later.

I think though that teachers can be wilder because they have to supress parts of their personality for the job and the job can be all encompassing and quite high stress.

End of term party stories are wild, and there are a fair number of clandestine relationships between people that you would never put together and never suspect.

Whowillwinthefootball · 26/06/2024 20:25

@Aladdinzane Yes, the relationships too!

That’s an interesting point about having to suppress parts of our personality.

I've known many teachers throughout my career. It depends what you mean by wild - like to "party" I assume? Some do, some don't just like any other set of people. Some extroverts, some introverts. I'd say they are mostly stable and responsible types though.

I think the "boring" aspect is mostly around the fact the job requires a sense of responsibility, at work at least, and there are so many of us that it is common to meet other teachers outside of work. Plus everyone has been to school so they don't tend to get excited about our jobs, having had plenty of teachers themselves.

Aladdinzane · 26/06/2024 20:37

@Whowillwinthefootball

Oh yes the relationships, the balding 40 something physics teacher who turned out to have been having an affair with the gorgeous 25 year old TA.

The RS teachers who had been having an affair for years, him the head and her his former NQT, only all came out when more than a decade later she was pregnant and he had to quickly leave his wife ( and leave the church where he was a lay preacher).

There are so many more stories...

Teddybarr · 26/06/2024 20:37

I've always assumed they're human and all have different personalities! That said when I was at school myself I couldn't imagine any of them doing anything outside of school- always seemed weird if saw them out and about!

My parents were doctors. They used to comment on the amount of drinking that went on. When they had parties, there would be a lot of empty bottles at the end - a lot more than the number of guests ....

I went to uni and did a small course but was very closely linked with the vets and the medics. Both wild. Particularly the medics for drug taking. There was a vets vs medics social one night where they drank the local wetherspoons dry 😳

Cosycover · 26/06/2024 20:56

I know three teachers.

One is not wild whatsoever.

One is averagely wild. Not a bad social life but also not out every weekend.

And the other is out every single weekend taking coke.

Teachers are just people. And all people are different.

Aladdinzane · 26/06/2024 21:01

I think medics and teachers are quite similar, there's a front to put on to the "customers" and an intensity to the time at work which isn't the same in other occupation. Therefore there's a lot of blowing off steam which means there's a lot of illicit behaviour which is kept under wraps.

I've just been thinking of more tales... some of the stuff from the 90s wouldn't fly now.

The Geography department who went to an island in the Med with the Year 13s for their field trip and spent most of the time partying in bars

The art teacher who was found to be having an affair with one of the mums, they met at parents evening!

I'll try and think of some more :)

somedizzyhore1804 · 26/06/2024 21:08

I don’t think boring is the opposite of drinking too much (which is what I think you mean by wild nights out/ crazy social lives?)
I assumed some of the teachers I had in school were boring in the true sense because they just seemed to have boring personalities. Other than that I never really thought about what they did or didn’t do. All adults are boring to kids really anyway, aren’t they. I was in adult education a few years ago and some of the teachers used to act like the students were dying to know all about their personal lives which I thought was weird but really nobody was the least bit interested. I wouldn’t think teachers don’t go on the piss any more than I would think dentists don’t go on foreign holidays or librarians hate picnics.

MojoDojoCasaHouse · 26/06/2024 21:09

I’m an accountant and have no trouble keeping up with my teacher friends at the weekends. I’m in no way unusual in that. We’re all different at work than we are at leisure, that’s not unique to teachers.

DH used to be a nurse and they were nuts, poor diet, anti depressants, chain smoking, binge drinking. He changed career for the sake of his health.

FindThatThing · 26/06/2024 21:10

What do you mean by ’wild’?

The teachers I know are in relationships/married and have kids.
Can’t be more conventional than that.

Do you mean drink / are loud / hook-up’s , perhaps?
I’ve never seen that as ’wild’ personally.

Well not everyone feels that way about teachers. I've certainly seen comments on here which almost seem to suggest it's inappropriate for teachers to have a social life or be out in public where they might be spotted enjoying themselves.

I disagree about kids finding teachers' lives interesting too. They often talk about teachers quite a lot and quite like knowing things about them.

The kids seem to often know about things that are going on before the staff.

There had been rumours about the RS couple for years but it was laughed off by staff who just saw it as the kids being silly as they were the only 2 in the department.

Turned out they'd been having an affair for over a decade.

I'm just curious as to the motivation of the OP, tbh.

After 23 years you're still amazed by the fact are just normal people with lives outside of school?

Wow, you're on one tonight. I've counted three acerbic comments on teacher threads from you already. Bad day at work?

Dahlietta · 26/06/2024 22:07

I'm fucking boring.

Whowillwinthefootball · 26/06/2024 22:49

@Dahlietta 😂 Yes, I am these days too

At the schools I was at, there were always liaisons between P.E staff and younger teachers

There was a young man who I taught with who had a very wild life it seemed. Always a bit off colour on a Monday morning, was known as a big drinker at staff parties, had been known to have dated/slept with other staff members.

He left years later to go be HOD in another school, at his leaving do a young English teacher, who had been a student (and head girl) at the school years before, told a colleague that he had all these nice stories being told about him, maybe she should tell the one of how she seduced him in his classroom the evening after her last A level when he was an NQT!

She didn't, my colleague did report it but because he had left ( this was in the early 2000s) the school didn't do anything.

Adviceneeeeded · 26/06/2024 22:53

As a restaurant owner we have hosted many teacher nights out. They can be crazy indeed

mondaytosunday · 26/06/2024 22:56

No more than your average person.
However our school matron is covered in tattoos and is a biker chick which would probably surprise 90% of the parents. Her uniform covers the tatts.

crackofdoom · 26/06/2024 22:57

I have many teachers amongst my acquaintance, and I can confirm that they're nearly all the life and soul of the party.

(especially the one I used to go to swingers' clubs with 😉)

wellington77 · 26/06/2024 23:16

We are all human at the end of the day so yep we can be wild like everyone else!
