Mostly to make me feel better. I'm currently up and about because I have a hacking cough and can't sleep, and have just spent £6.50 on a baby lego crocodile on eBay.

Backstory: DS(6) has a Lego set which includes a family of crocodiles. Today a friend's toddler was over and took a shine to the baby crocodile, so he gave it to her to take home. He is totally unbothered, and knowing him will remain so, but I've felt sorry for the parent crocodiles all day, and have now spent actual real money to assuage my upset that two small pieces of plastic might be missing a third smaller piece of plastic. I even caught myself (briefly) worrying that the new baby crocodile isn't quite the right shade of green, and that they might know it's not really theirs.

My only defence is that I am quite pregnant and hormonal, and due to aforementioned cough have had very little sleep for the last few days. I'm honestly not usually this batshit...

Has anyone else spent money on anything so completely ridiculous?

OP you are not worried about the baby crocodile in a strange home with no parents? Hadn’t you better send new parents to care for it?

BeRealOrca · 26/06/2024 13:10

Probably spending about £3,500 to date to drive virtual cars around on the Internet.

My DD1 hated the pram from day one, but whilst pregnant with DD2 I was adamant that she (by then a headstrong 2YO) would want to sit in the pram with her baby sister. Spent £1400 on a fancy double pram which she sat in once. It was heavy, cumbersome and took up all the room in our (large) boot - even as a single pram - so I sold it for £600 less than I bought it for within about 3 weeks 😭

Yeah you didn’t have to do that could’ve just bought two prams of the same brand and clipped them together to make a double

I sometimes feel sorry for the unchosen piece of fruit or last item of the product on the shelf and buy it. Or the one that is slightly mishapen or damaged I worry that it feels left out, unchosen and abandoned. Not good enough. So i rescue it and take it home to fulfil its purpose and live up to its promise.

I bought the one last remaining cuddly penguin lying at the bottom of a basket in a service station recently, for similar reasons.

I bought a four inch tall mouse in a tutu last Christmas because she had only one leg. All her fellow ballerinas had two.

I bought a sad looking chilli plant from Aldi because I felt sorry for it. I fed it and watered it and showered it with love and it grew big and strong. It repaid my attention with a bumper crop of chillies. We don't eat chillies....

Sorry wrong thread 😂

HulaChick · 26/06/2024 22:57

A second hand till on Ebay (proper shop one) - always wanted to have one and play shops. It came, was pretty grotty & didn't even work properly. However, thinking about getting another one!!

AveAtqueVale · 27/06/2024 13:07

They're reunited! DS looked at me like I was absolutely barmy when I presented him with baby croc 2.0, but I'm genuinely so relieved. I haven't been able to look at the parents for days 😂 😂.

Croc mum and dad look genuinely happy and relieved to be reunited. What a relief all round ❤️

After the second lockdown was announced I ordered a blow up dinosaur costume. Best thing ever, cheered us up no end.

Us too! It's honestly one of the best things we own. Gets a laugh every time

I love this thread. Thank you to all who have contributed so far!
I also have lost a single AirPod in my bed overnight, not once, but twice. Both times the right one. Searched for weeks. You can order replacements to match up from Apple, but not cheap.

I also fully relate to the washi tape. I may or may not have a stash. Can I just say anyone under the age of 12 will happily use that crap up for you 😂

I concur! My stash ended up being given to my primary aged DD, who was thrilled with it 😂

Consultations with psychic mediums when I was grieving. I spent thousands with many, many different ones and never got any comfort, reassurance or proof that any one of them had a gift. I believed because I needed to, and now I see how they took advantage of a vulnerable young woman who was heartbroken.

Auntie I did the same. I'm 56 now but when I was 34 my beloved dh died unexpectedly. I was completely bereft & once my dds went to bed I would phone the pyschic numbers desperate to hear from him. In the end I got cut off as my phone bill was £600 & I didn't have the money to pay it.

Did you give it to your dog to promptly chew up?

thecatsarecrazy · 02/07/2024 17:40

Spent £100 on a holiday chalet last week to spend the night with a guy. .
Let's just say he must have been very tired

JWhipple · 02/07/2024 19:20

Over the last few months I've probably spent about £50 on replacement parts for my vacuum cleaner. It was £180 about five years ago and been a great vacuum. I'm irked as all the parts are for the floor brush as the end bit that connects it to the motor is badly designed.and keeps conking out. I'm having one last bash at repairing it before admitting defeat

And buying another one second hand.

I probably need an intervention at this point.

I love my books. I've impulse bought an entire series I already had because I preferred the covers of the new ones (well, it was technically older versions but they were a new purchase). It wasn't even like I had the money to throwaway, I had to make compromises elsewhere to accommodate that madness.

Worst thing was, it took me ages to give the originals away because I'm terrible at parting with books.

OP, I feel like I owe this post some thanks. I almost did it again, almost dropped £200+ quid on new versions of books I already have and then thought about this post and the fact I've done that before. I'm now going to read the editions that I have and stop being a dick! 🤣

ProudMamaBear92 · 01/09/2024 20:13

£160 on OOH vets for our cat that we thought was dying, but was actually pissed as a fart from drinking vanilla essence from the cooking cupboard.

tommyhoundmum · 02/09/2024 08:47

We didn't actually spend money on a dinosaur but when, during lockdown 2, one appeared at my window it did cause an enormous amount of fun and good cheer. Out of all proportion really.

DisgruntledPelican · 02/09/2024 11:30
