I’ve stayed at the queens hotel and that was very good price, and only a short walk into York city centre.

Sirzy · 23/06/2024 18:08

Look at places near the park and ride instead of in the centre maybe?

Littletreefrog · 23/06/2024 18:09

Travelodge can be quite cheap as long as there are no events on at the time

Oldshoes223 · 23/06/2024 18:47

Just checked out queens hotel and it’s sold out on booking.com.
I’m hoping we can make it work.
If not I’ll check out Carlisle and see if that’s cheaper.
Like the sound of Harrogate too but think that will be dearer than York

What is your ideal budget for a double/twin and what month are you planning on visiting?

Skyrainlight · 23/06/2024 20:36

I think it was the Novotel I stayed in in York. There were two double beds in my room and in the other room we booked, so if all rooms are like that you could get four to a room to keep costs down. It was reasonably priced when I went but that was a while ago.

Thindog · 23/06/2024 20:45

Premier Inn, near park and ride.

PercyPhelps · 23/06/2024 20:49

The YHA Youth Hostel has private rooms with en suites. It’s modern, has parking and it’s a nice walk along the river into the city centre.

Pottingup · 23/06/2024 20:50

We stayed at the YHA in York. It’s lovely walk into the city along the river or there’s a bus. They do private or family en-suite rooms and have a games room and reasonable food. It was a nice atmosphere - would definitely recommend.

Kitkat1523 · 23/06/2024 20:56

York and shoestring are not words that go together OP

Premier Inn, near park and ride.

Yes, I think this is your best bet.
Hotels and B and Bs in the city centre will cost a fortune.
Try and find some accommodation around the Park and Rides and then it's about a 10 to 15 minutes bus ride into York. Buses really regular, about every ten minutes.
There's Tadcaster Road Park and Ride off the top of my head which is about a 10 minute ride into town
Or the Monks Cross one

When I did York with my daughter for Uni visits we stayed at the Travel lodge outside of York which was a short car ride from the Park and Ride. Anything in York itself is going to be expensive. The Park and Ride was very efficient.

StripedTomatoes · 23/06/2024 23:12

You'd probably be cheaper staying in one of the Premier Inns in Leeds city centre and getting the train to and from York.

Oldshoes223 · 23/06/2024 23:27

Thanks so much for all the tips. I really appreciate it and like the list and Leeds idea.
If all else fails, can anyone suggest a Uk city break which they think May be reasonably priced!?🙏thanks

We stayed in the Hampton by Hilton in York last year, was really reasonable, included breakfast and was very handily located.
We also barely spent any money as we didn't do any paid activities - town walls, outside of Minster, Shambles, riverside walks etc.
Would recommend Cresci for amazing and cheap pizza.

clareykb · 23/06/2024 23:31

Newcastle might be cheaper (biased am from here) hour to York on the train so could do it as a day trip if u had time

TotHappy · 23/06/2024 23:31

I was coming on to say the YHA hostel! We stayed me, DH and 3yo DD in a family room and loved it. Ofc it's basic but clean and fine and lovely walk into the city.

Carlisle will be cheaper because it’s not that nice. The premier inn in Oxford is in a fab location if you’re after a historic city and that’s not too far? Certainly when we stayed was also a good deal.

Sharpkat · 23/06/2024 23:38

When are you looking to come? Agree with @Kitkat1523 that there is nothing cheap about York. Just wonder if you are clashing with the races or something?

BeachParty · 23/06/2024 23:40

"Can I have recommendations on where to stay in York on a budget please?"
Everyone else -
Carlisle!
Leeds!
Oookay lol

Kago2790 · 23/06/2024 23:43

Chester is a bit like York

GellerYeller · 23/06/2024 23:49

There are loads of nice b and bs on Fulford Road which is on a park and ride bus route and walkable to the centre in good weather. Or maybe Google pubs with rooms on the outskirts? There are really good bus services and four-I think- park and ride locations. There’s a Premier Inn or Travelodge on the A64 at Copmanthorpe, five mins drive from a park and ride at the designer outlet. Agree, check when the Races are on and avoid.

Although Chester is nowhere near York lol

Maverickess · 24/06/2024 00:20

I visit someone in York and have gone with another person and stayed in a hostel (Astor?) in a private twin room with en suite, they had rooms with 2 bunk beds in as well I think and it was about £3 for a breakfast of cereal/toast and tea/coffee/juice, and was about £70 for the room in total, last year September time.
Nothing flash but the beds were clean and comfortable and the bathroom adequate and I think it had a TV in the room as well.
