Although Chester is nowhere near York lol

Op subsequently asked for a UK city break

ForeveraBluebird · 24/06/2024 00:35

When you say afew of you Op, remember that travelodge charge an extra £10 for a third adult and premier inn only allow two adults per room. Might be worth looking at hostels.

KenAdams · 24/06/2024 00:40

You need to really state your budget and the month you're visiting before anyone can recommend anything properly.

Little hide glamping pods approx £89pn , adults only , bus stop right at the exit . Around 4 miles from york.
Very popular cafe on site, does breakfast and afternoon teas etc plus small gift shop .
For shopping Clifton Moor is around 1 mile and Monks Cross/Vanguard is about a 2 mile taxi ride away.
Rawcliffe Bar park and ride around 4 miles away

Oldshoes223 · 24/06/2024 01:32

I like the sound of those glamping pods thanks!

Do you have a link to those four miles from York glamping pods? Sounds ace and genuinely intrigued as to where they are, I want one lol

Little Hide Glamping Pods Wiggington

I've stayed at the Novotel in the recent past, £260/3 people/1 room/parking and swimming included. In general, the closer you get to the city walls, the pricier the chain hotels become.

TaraTories · 24/06/2024 07:37

We did air bnb in a lovely house for £65pn then got the bus into the city centre. I imagine most hotels will be more than that.

Chargerbattles · 24/06/2024 07:37

The travel lodge at Tadcaster has a bus stop right outside with regular buses into York and if you're driving it is close to two park and rides. Walking the walls is free and really lovely and plenty of Wetherspoons for cheap lunches. The museum gardens are also free and beautiful. The railway museum is free too, and then there's the river to walk along.

Re: other cities for city breaks

Places that are good for city breaks eg: York, Bath, Edinburgh, Chester, Oxford ... tend to by pricey for exactly this reason.i really enjoyed Belfast, the PI was pretty reasonable, but you do have the added complications of crossing the sea...

Gorgonemilezola · 24/06/2024 07:49

How long are you going for? We often have a night away on a Sunday and hotel rooms are usually much cheaper on a Sunday night - I think we paid £49 for Travelodge in York, but it was January. I've just checked and they have rooms next Sunday from £38.99 in York. Even the city centre ones are about £50.

Newcastle is a great city, as is Liverpool.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 24/06/2024 07:53

Stay in Halls of Residence - this might be cheaper.

Premier Inn have just opened a new hotel at Layerthorpe, 10 mins walk from York City centre - might find some opening offers? Check out big race meets and other events at York Race course too. Demand on accommodation will go up then, as will cost.

cakeorwine · 24/06/2024 07:58

I suppose it depends how you define shoestring?

If you stay elsewhere and use public transport to York, you have those costs to take into account.

There are a lot of B&Bs in York and more hotels seem to be being built all the time.

If you can use a car and don't mind not drinking, then you could easily stay elsewhere and drive in. Selby isn't too far to drive into to York. Or even Goole.

I suppose it depends what exactly you want to do for the trip

ClashCityRocker · 24/06/2024 08:01

There's a Travelodge on Hull Road which is by a bus stop with very regular busses (and it's actually about a half hour walk into town).

There's also ones at rawcliffe bar and monks cross which are next to park and rides - again easy access to town.

Again, rawcliffe bar is a very pleasant walk along the river into town - about forty minutes.

These tend to be cheaper as they aren't in the centre which is quite small.

Diamonds hotel often comes up as the cheapest but avoid - it's horrendous.

Other than that the YHA is also lovely and a beautiful walk into town either down the river or along bootham. Could also try the Old Grey Mare, a pub with rooms.

Check you're not coming on a races weekend as others have said as hotel prices are at a premium then.

Shortbread49 · 24/06/2024 08:04

Hampton by Hilton, hostel in Micklegate is in a nice listed building I walk past I often and think the lounge area looks nice, some premier inns on the outskirts but with bus routes. The market has a great street food area with seating just don’t go to bettys it’s 4.95 for a tea 🤣

Oh gosh yes, there was a thread last summer/autumn from someone who was having a dreadful time at Diamonds Hotel.

I don’t know about hotels but if you do find yourself in York the railway museum is excellent and free. I had no expectations as trains aren’t my thing but honestly, it was the best thing we visited.

Shortbread49 · 24/06/2024 08:34

Yes the railway museum is excellent, so is walking the walks the bottom part by the Minster is the best plus nice riverside walks in both directions from town . Especially past bishopthorpe road stop there for a coffee then go along riverside path past row trees park can also stop for a coffee as has nice cafe along to millennium bridge cross that , stop for an ice cream from the ice cream boat and walk back into town along other river bank

Yorkiepud2614 · 24/06/2024 08:36

I’ve just booked Roomzzz for a few nights next May and it was £67 a night for a room with a balcony. Might have been so cheap because I booked so far in advance though!

fliptopbin · 24/06/2024 08:52

Look around Bootham and Fulford for cheapish B and Bs , and make sure you don't clash with the races. Also the Premiere Inns on the ring road and the YHA.

Oldshoes223 · 24/06/2024 09:07

Thanks so much- these are all great ideas- I will start looking into the hotels mentioned and hopefully we will find something 🙏
