dd and I love baking together and now at school they do cake sales which she now wants to do her own on the green outside our house for neighbours/children that play here.
i feel a bit awkward with the idea of it, should I say no?

It sounds like a fantastic idea, why do you think no?

ILikeALemonWedgeInMyGin · 22/06/2024 20:20

I agree with @ElleLeopine, sounds brilliant.

God one of mine was obsessed by doing this for a while! I have let her do it a couple of times on the conditions that:

  • it was raising money for charity not her
  • she baked one simple thing, not the batshit 10-item menu she was planning.
Kept her busy for a weekend, she felt v pleased with herself, did actually raise some money.

We did similar - although I wasn’t keen, I must admit it was successful!

Insurance against poisoning anyone
has she got a food hygien certificate
have you got pets that go in the kitchen
can she provide allergy advice

it’s a nice idea but so many things can go wrong……

Don't be ridiculous.

Jesus, the joy is sucked out of everything nowadays. I'm pretty sure anyone with serious allergies would avoid kids selling cake like the plague. As for hygiene, hopefully the OP will supervise that.

There’s always someone 😂 I don’t quite think a 5 year old will be getting a hygiene certificate.
we don’t have any pets though so that’s ok and I would supervise of course
I’ll let her have a go next week, she’s got that entrepreneurial mindset already

I agree with the PP about how it can sadly Go wrong. I’m speaking from experience here. The slightest thing and it will come back on you

Haha love that, full 5 page menu of different cakes. Will try keep it simple for her.

Our sweet little neighbour (9) has done this a couple of times for charity.

she bakes with her mum and they put a note on the street what’s app what time she’s selling her wares.

she writes out a little price list and cooks a few cakes and makes a little money for charity.

It is so sweet - we all support her down the street - I’m a celiac and can’t even eat cakes but I go out and buy a couple for the family to support her enterprise.

I think it’s absolutely adorable that she’s trying to help others.

it’s informal and not compulsory!! - no need for licences and health and safety madness!

I love community spirited things like this and think it should be encouraged!

let her do it if you have kind neighbours that will engage with it!

MumblesParty · 22/06/2024 21:03

My teenagers still talk fondly about the ice cream sale we did once, many years ago, accosting passers by and selling them ice creams and milk shakes! We gave the money to the charity that school was fundraising for at the time. It was fun.

Can you give more details about what went wrong for you?

isthewashingdryyet · 23/06/2024 15:04

A five year old is even worse, never yet met a five year old who could resist sticking a finger in and licking the raw mixture , over and over again. Double dipped cake mix anyone, yuk.

a quick Google of ‘can I sell cakes I make at home’ gave the answers I posted above, and a visit by an environmental health officer is also part of the process. Records need to be kept of the ingredients used, with their best before dates, and how they have been stored and for how long, have eggs been kept in a fridge or put on the side in a warm kitchen?
was the oven really hot enough, I know mine isn’t as I bought a thermometer as my brownies were too raw in the middle. I have to add 20’ to my dial to get the right temperature . My brownies needed to be eaten the same day, or the raw mix in the middle would have been a right risk to health after a few days

i do admire her enterprise, and am aware I being a Debbie downer, but could she draw pictures, or paint stones, or sell unwanted toys instead ?

GodlessCommie · 23/06/2024 15:08

Jeez. Don't ovens kill germs? Go for it, it's adorable. I would totally buy cakes from a small child (although I eat month out of date yogurt so I'm probably not an expert)

And if you do a slightly slower google you’ll find that as a one off there’s no need for env health registration

Whilst you’re googling you’ll also find that eggs don’t need to be kept under refrigeration, haven’t you noticed they’re in the ambient aisles in supermarkets?

I used to work in env health

Some kids near me do a lemonade stall sometimes, it's fab and we all love it.

Do you know your neighbours? If they are nice, might be worth giving them a heads up that cakes will be on sale for 5p to charity (or whatever). I think it's a lovely idea.

isthewashingdryyet · 23/06/2024 15:18

Isn’t there currently a massive problem with E. coli, that no one can track down the source of. It’s affecting salads and sandwiches all over the country.

Cant help but think that five year olds are a brilliant source of E. coli

lemonade would be better and sounds like a really nice idea

MarlieJae · 23/06/2024 15:22

Is it baking she wants to do?

Could it be something easier, ‘re - bagging’ bought sweets including a hand drawn label would be easy.

ilovesooty · 23/06/2024 15:23

Let's hope some of the doom mongers don't live on your street.

I hope she has a lovely time.

She's a kid - not a registered business doing this for a living. She doesn't need a food hygiene certificate, just like you don't need one to sell cakes at a school fete or a charity event either.

Natasha's Law doesn't apply to her either.

Honestly, if you're going to google, at least do it properly 😬

isthewashingdryyet · 23/06/2024 15:24

My kitchen is south facing and is currently boiling. Not ambient like the temp in the supermarket at all.

Thank you - you've made me laugh so much. And knowing the OP's daughter was five made it even better.

MILTOBE · 23/06/2024 15:28

What about her making some packet cakes, like brownies? I think they come out quite well (yes, I do bake normal cakes) and they would be easy and quick to make.
