To cut my sons eyelashes?

Namechangepleas · 21/06/2024 21:40

I can't find much info online about this as it just comes up about fake eyelashes.
My son has been getting irritated by his long eyelashes for a while now and it's keeping him up at night.
Are you allowed to cut them? If so how? Has anyone done this before?
He's 5 years old fyi

Are the growing into his eye?

BritishMuseumStaff · 21/06/2024 21:42

My AI Google search says

Yes, you can gently trim your natural eyelashes with small scissors. However, cutting them can have both short-term and long-term consequences:
Short-term
Sharp edges can irritate the skin around your eyes, and your eyes may be more sensitive to dirt and particles, which can increase the risk of infection.
Long-term
As your lashes grow back, they may grow unevenly, which can cause cosmetic issu
es.

What exactly is the issue with them? Mine are long but they only bother me when I'm wearing glasses

Namechangepleas · 21/06/2024 21:45

They're really long and make him blink a lot but they look normal I think. He just keeps saying they're annoying him.

He's probably just focusing on them and that's why they're annoying him.

Much like if you focus on breathing or blinking.

Leave them alone and he'll find something else to focus his attention on.

PonyPatter44 · 21/06/2024 21:49

I don't think this is a great idea. Tell him to think about something else when his lashes start annoying him. Cutting eyelashes, especially on a child, is just daft.

Hoglet70 · 21/06/2024 21:51

The Optician told my DS to put vaseline on his long eye lashes.

WibbleWob · 21/06/2024 21:51

Putting Vaseline on them helps them curl up and out of their eyes. My two had ridiculously long eyelashes and the health visitor recommended it as they were getting in their eyes.

OneTC · 21/06/2024 21:52

Only do something if they are actively irritating his eyes, ie look red or whatever. If that's the case then take him to the doctor

Is there a possibility he could be getting hayfever?

Crystalball84 · 21/06/2024 21:52

Could you curl them so they go upwards, that sounds mad but might keep them out of his eyes.

elliejjtiny · 21/06/2024 21:52

Could be sensory problems. My 10 year old has this and he cuts his eye lashes at school of he gets hold of scissors.

Reugny · 21/06/2024 21:53

Please don't.

It is bloody f++ing strange

One of my brothers' did that to his sons when they were little for the same reasons.

They looked odd and then grew back.

Namechangepleas · 21/06/2024 21:54

Thanks for the advice! I'll try the vaseline. I definitely don't want to be cutting them I just wasn't sure if it was even a thing.

NO DONT CUT THEM

Try an eyelash curler

maslinpan · 21/06/2024 22:04

Are you sure it's not just an excuse at night time? My DS regularly used to get out of bed when he was little because his toenails supposedly needed cutting.

NotSoHotMess24 · 21/06/2024 22:30

A friend at school had this. She used a special, clear "mascara". It didn't look at all like she was wearing makeup as didn't darken or thicken lashes or anything. Purely practical.

Good luck!

Iona40 · 21/06/2024 22:47

I’d speak to a medic if the eyelashes are bothering him significantly over time ie weeks - because it is quite unusual there may be something else going on. Doing anything around eye area must take great care, would not cut and would be wary of putting Vaseline on a child’s eye.

Readysteadygoo · 21/06/2024 22:47

I do cut my bottom lashes because they're far too long but I wouldn't cut the top
(Aren't they for protecting your eyes?)
Vaseline is a much safer option quite relaxing to apply

Copperoliverbear · 21/06/2024 23:12

It sounds to me like more than his eyelashes are the problem. X

This sounds crazy to me. But I know nothing..other than to wonder what on earth is happening... no one surely can be bettered by eyelashes . Surely its something more. I qoukdnr go near eyelaashes with s cissors either

Long eleyelashes create a lotnof attention....people commenting on how beautiful etc etc. Does that happpen and is he becoming conscious of it? I wouldn't take this so concretely probably. I'd really wonder if soemrhign else is bothering him

pandasorous · 21/06/2024 23:35

I wish I had too long eye lashes....

KreedKafer · 22/06/2024 00:24

Unless he has a disorder that makes his lashes grow inwards (which I think you’d have noticed) it’s extremely unlikely that they’re causing him genuine irritation. It’s more likely either a psychosomatic thing or his eyes are a bit itchy or dry when he’s tired and he’s wrongly attributing this to his eyelashes.

Don’t cut them; a blunt ended cut lash is a million times more likely to irritate than a naturally tapered one. Put a tiny bit of Vaseline or clear mascara on them.

I speak from experience as someone who has very long eyelashes and also went through a phase of moaning about them as a small child.

Good point. His eyes might feel itchy due to hayfever and he thinks its his eyelashes causing the irritation
