To work remotely from a campsite

dogoverman · 21/06/2024 14:22

Would it be unreasonable to take the dog camping and work remotely from a campsite with electric hook up

I have a little table and chair and could work quite well

You might need to be more specific.

What problems do you think you might encounter that would make it unreasonable?

Assuming the WiFi will be ok?

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/06/2024 14:24

As long as the WiFi connection is good I can’t see why you wouldn’t, if you like camping. Bit miserable if it’s cold or raining, though.

Legomania · 21/06/2024 14:24

Do you need to be online? Anywhere I've ever camped the internet has been terrible for obvious reasons

IncognitoUsername · 21/06/2024 14:25

Depends what you do. If employed by someone else then would they allow it? Could you guarantee a good enough WiFi signal?

TwattyMcFuckFace · 21/06/2024 14:25

Will you need to do a full day, and will the dog be ok not being able to run around for most of it?

OhmygodDont · 21/06/2024 14:25

I mean aslong as you can get the signal go for it.

bennybannsider · 21/06/2024 14:25

What does your employer say?

I couldn't do it. The rare times I WFH I'm also on call to come in at a moments notice, so I couldn't be away on holiday. And I deal with private information that I wouldn't feel comfortable looking after in a tent. But I think most WFH people aren't in that position, so it could well work.

Kittea · 21/06/2024 14:26

I would, sounds fabulous.

As long as you can rely on the connection.

REP22 · 21/06/2024 14:26

Main issue I could see would be if your work is confidential/sensitive and if your employers would be OK with it. Just be mindful of surroundings. Plenty of people work in shared spaces or coffee-shops.

YourArtfulPlayer · 21/06/2024 14:27

If you are allowed to WFH I am guessing there is no stipulation as to where that home is just as long as you fulfil your contract - so not unreasonable to me.

As a tip... I WFH and just don't tell anyone when I am on holiday. I find if I do, then people make more of an effort to get in touch or need something urgently 😂

DailyMailHater · 21/06/2024 14:28

depends on your work policy about remote working ours states we are not allowed to work from a public location as you can’t quarantine the security of the wifi connection opening your work severs and laptops up to a virus etc

greencartbluecart · 21/06/2024 14:28

Can you see your screen outside

Is mobile data good enough

Will you be handling confidential material

Will you need to take business calls

FuzzyWuzzyWuzABear · 21/06/2024 14:29

This thread could run forever without more info from the OP.

Hoppinggreen · 21/06/2024 14:30

Depends
I can WFH anywhere so not an issue but DH works on Govt contracts and has to use a secure connection so he couldn't do it

CJ0374 · 21/06/2024 14:30

As others have said, do you know the WIFI strength and reliability? Do you need to take calls or make them? Would they be guaranteed privacy during those calls? Do you need to be seen in any meetings? Sunbaking on a camping chair with your tent in the background may not be appropriate 😆

Hopeandmoss · 21/06/2024 14:30

Wifi on campsites is always rubbish - good luck!

Weepingwillows12 · 21/06/2024 14:30

Depends on your job. If you are having to do lots of calls on anything sensitive then probably no (also how annoyed would you be if you pitched up for a quiet break next to someone constantly in calls).

My work policy might not allow it as can't secure your laptop properly overnight. We aren't allowed to leave it locked in a car so definitely not a tent.

It does sound lovely to do though.

Porkybleeder · 21/06/2024 14:36

You're really going to need to decide this for yourself. You know what work you need to do, what your employer would think, what the WiFi or 4g signal would be like etc etc

Without that information I don't understand why you think a bunch of strangers would be better placed to make a decision than you?

dogoverman · 21/06/2024 14:38

I could shut myself in the car for any phone calls
Rare but I definitely should not be overheard
I don't usually have teams meetings and if I do I don't really have speaking role

It's a good point about the Wi-Fi though that would make it crucial

The dog would be a slight nuisance but after a good walk she is very tired

I wouldn't share it with my boss I don't think the policy species where we can work

I am thinking of going somewhere near enough that I could still go in if needed,

TwattyMcFuckFace · 21/06/2024 14:48

For a dog, being a 'slight nuisance' means being bored.

Only you know your own dog, but mine would be desperate to explore all the new sights, smells, sounds and other dogs.

They'd never settle long enough for me to work longer than two hours at a time.

TheChosenTwo · 21/06/2024 14:52

We don’t really know what you do as to whether or not this will work but it doesn’t sound like it would be entirely successful given your update.
our policy has some further details about this but essentially no we would not be permitted to work this way and my role wouldn’t be possible without multiple screens and a printer!

IncognitoUsername · 21/06/2024 14:53

I think not clearing it with your boss is definitely a bad plan.

Well there has been lots of points to consider I hadn't thought of so worth it for me, but thanks for the helpful input

Well it would be a definite no 😊

OP posts:
dogoverman · 21/06/2024 15:01

Sadly the more I think of it with all the helpful input the more I think it's an unrealistic dream, especially the security of the laptop and the dog LOVES camping because of all the walks so she probably wouldn't be quiet

Thanks everyone !

A nice dream but the practicalities wouldn't work
