My home has a dog shaped hole in it. 😔

But it's been a while now, nearly two years and I know costs of everything have gone up so much! If I do explore finding a new dog to re-home I'd like to do so with my eyes wide open to monthly costs.

Pet insurance, flea and worming/pet plan, food, treats, grooming, dog walking, etc.

Please share with me your monthly costs for each thing.

I had a greyhound and would likely get another so my only grooming costs would be claw trimming if they didn't like me doing it. But they do put away a fair bit of food 🙂❤️ and I like to have pet insurance.

I'm mostly at home but if that changes in the future I'd like to be aware of the average costs of walkers or doggy day care too.

Please share your costs if you can.

Oh forgot monthly nail clipping £32 for both
6 weekly wash / groom £104 for both

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 22/06/2024 07:07

I have a pointer and a cross breed.

Grooming fees = 0 because I do it myself.
Insurance £15 each because they're insured for accidents only.
Flea and wormer about £2 a month (I only do it once or twice a year so I've divided the cost by 12).
Food £20 per month.
So all in all about £27 per month each.

LaWench · 22/06/2024 07:13

Pet insurance, grooming, dog walking £0
Vets: we recently spayed at £360 so a one off and pay £50pa for jabs and worming treatment.
Food: £17pm. She only likes expensive food.

We self insure our pets from savings and don't subscribe to vet plans.

BigDahliaFan · 22/06/2024 07:17

Our dog insurance is £500 a year,I took it out when she was a puppy and the one that means it’ll cover recurring conditions and the premiums won’t go up if you make recurring claims….

very glad I did, she’s got allergies and has cytopoint and pills every month that would cost us about £1500 a year….

Bluewhitered · 22/06/2024 07:21

4 year old golden retriever-

insurance - £70
vet plan £25
food £85
dog walker £90
Groomer (£70 x 3 a year so monthly ) £17.50

£287.5

Then there’s extra costs like toys, leads , if we go abroad with him he has to get a passport, we pay extra for having a dog in accommodation or if we get the euro tunnel it costs extra. We haven’t claimed on vets as we have a £100 excesss but if we take him for something less than £100 we pay - roughly twice a year we expect to pay for paw injuries or eating something bad .

I'm interested to know how you can feed 2 dogs for £20 a month , given your user name do you get discount at work ?

Lordofmyflies · 22/06/2024 07:39

Food is £75 a month
Treats £10
Insurance £45
Walker 2 days a week is £80
Worming / Flea treatment £12
Toys/lead/bed/collars/shampoo etc maybe £5 a month

£230 a month - worth every penny!

Zanatdy · 22/06/2024 07:44

A lot.

£250 walks - sometimes more
£45 every 7 weeks - groomer
£30 every 3 months - flea / tick treatment
£70 insurance - started low, then he got glaucoma and other diseases
£30 food - I buy in bulk so could be more
£2-3 a week on treats

then there’s adhoc, beds, toys etc.

I adore my boy, the whole family do, but he costs so much more than I ever expected. He’s 7 now, and as much as I adore dogs, I’ll be having a dog break after he departs.

16 year old Lhasa Apso.

Food: £40, he only likes cheap tinned stuff and he's nearly 17 so he's done ok on it!
Insurance: £20 a year, he is insured through dogs trust, third party, liability only. He has never been ill and we would use savings if he was.
Vet: £50 annual injections and check up.
He has never been ill. Not one accident either.
We don't routinely treat for fleas and he has picked them up just twice in his life, both times after staying in dog friendly holiday accommodation. We have always been really worried about the environmental effects of flea treatments as bourne out by Chris Packham's article on spring watch.
We give wormers once a year.
Dog beds: £100 a year. He wrecks them 😆.
Dog care: Nothing now, DH is retired but used to be £120 a month for a walker 3 times a week on my working days.
Holiday care: Nothing, he goes to relatives.
Toys: Charity shop. Not much.
Grooming: I went on a course to learn how to do him myself, one off cost of £300 but has saved us thousands as he is a woolly breed and needs trimming at least every 8 weeks..
Clippers £200 about 12 years ago.

Overall he's been a bit of a bargain.
Lhasa Apso: 5 stars, would recommend 😁

MrsPinkCock · 22/06/2024 08:07

Golden retriever

Food and treats £140/month
Vet plan and insurance £45
Groom £20
Toys and other stuff probably about £40 a month on average

So £245… he’s raw fed and spoiled though…

fieldsofbutterflies · 22/06/2024 08:14

Six year old beagle.

Insurance - £70 a month for 15k/year lifetime cover including dental.
Food - about £30 a month. I buy direct from the supplier and get money off for buying in bulk.
Treats/chews - about £20 a month.

I don't flea treat unless we find a flea (never have since we got him) and wormer is about £10 a bottle off Amazon. It also treats the cats.

He's quite cheap IMO but we don't need to pay for a walker or kennels or daycare so that helps a lot.

Southwest12 · 22/06/2024 08:17

Mines a 17 month old cockapoo

Insurance is £18, vet plan is £18. Food is £32 for kibble and around £20 for lillys kitchen (only buy it when it's on offer!). Probably about £15 a month on treats.

Groom is £52 every 6 weeks.

Doggy daycare is £12 a day and he goes twice a week. It's an absolute bargain, most of the people round here charge £40 a day. My friend has him normally if I'm away, I'm very lucky!

Qual · 22/06/2024 08:24

We have two combined costs per month are :

Food:158
Insurance: 75 (although we will have a hefty increase on this as we have claimed I'm expecting it to double at a min)
Vets monthly payment : 32
Treats/Toys : 25
Joint oil etc for food : 10
One of our dogs is now on regular eye drops : 60
Groom (every other month) : 45

I get a massive discount at work, but I don't buy food from there.

I get 12kg of dog food from Lidl (3kg bags at £2.85 per bag) and if I use my Lidl app I get 10% off. I also buy cheap chicken breasts or other meat which I boil and they have that with the dry food.

Roundroundthegarden · 22/06/2024 09:05

TheFlis · 21/06/2024 09:37

Insurance: £50 a month
Food: £35 a month
Dog walker once a week @ £20: £80 a month
Wormers etc: approx £20 a month
Toys / teats / blankets / misc: approx £25 a month

So all in, just over £200 a month and then there are dog sitting costs on top of that which are approx £40 per 24 hours. He only needs grooming twice a year and that’s £70 each time.

He’s worth every penny!

Edited

I would disagree 🤣

Loafbeginsat60 · 22/06/2024 09:16

I have two dogs

Insurance £35 and £20
Vet pet plan £12 each
Food £84 - organic dry and meat sachets
Vets - never really anything so maybe £100 a year on average
Dog walker £200 a year for pop in visits if away for a long day
Kennels £300 a year (2 trips at 150 each)
Toys / treats £50 a year maybe
Car valets £45 a month! Hairy buggers....

New outdoor kennels recently £3000

The money doesn't bother me - the constant hoovering isn't great tho!

Eeeden · 22/06/2024 09:22

Vet plan - £16 a month (boosters, wormers, defleaing treatment, check ups)
Food - £20 a month (small dog)
Dog gear and toys - £10
Also put money aside every month for vet bills - £75.

So about £125 a month and £75 of that I still have but expect to spend at some point on vet bills. He is 5. I've only had to pay £400 in vet bills so far so have more than £4000 saved for him.

''Reading this I don’t know why my dogs insurance is so high. I have a JRT x bichon who is 10 and it’s £86 a month and a JRT= who is I and it’s £76 a month 🤦‍♀️''

I expect it's decent insurance, I have a terrier mix and it's £14 a month however it only covers up to £4k a year per condition. It's what I can afford and hopefully my dog will stay healthy!

I guess you pay what you can afford 🤷‍♀️

GSDmom · 22/06/2024 18:38

Insurance £50
Food £90-100
Pet plan £25
Treats £40-50
Supplements £20

He's bloody high maintenance! 😂

DeathNote11 · 22/06/2024 18:49

Chihuahua. Someone home 24 x 7, plus unlimited access to secure rear garden via cat flap - so easy peasy.

Food £30
Insurance £17
Ridiculous stuff I buy that I see advertised online or in B&M - can be hundreds some months.
