To ask how much your dog costs per month?

My home has a dog shaped hole in it. 😔

But it's been a while now, nearly two years and I know costs of everything have gone up so much! If I do explore finding a new dog to re-home I'd like to do so with my eyes wide open to monthly costs.

Pet insurance, flea and worming/pet plan, food, treats, grooming, dog walking, etc.

Please share with me your monthly costs for each thing.

I had a greyhound and would likely get another so my only grooming costs would be claw trimming if they didn't like me doing it. But they do put away a fair bit of food 🙂❤️ and I like to have pet insurance.

I'm mostly at home but if that changes in the future I'd like to be aware of the average costs of walkers or doggy day care too.

Please share your costs if you can.

@WombatStewForTea can I ask the details of where you send the samples for worms? I would be interested as don't want to treat necessarily and I have seen that monthly treatment is causing resistance.

Like another pp I used FecLab https://www.feclab.co.uk/

Been doing it years and have never found anything needing treating so would have been a lot of unnecessary wormer

Regular worm count testing, Faecal Egg Counts, allows you to monitor the effectiveness of your worming programme. Test Kits are available.

4 yr old beagle cross
£40 insurance
£20 vet plan (vaccinations check ups flea and worm)
£300 boarding (work away 2 days a week, £25 per night)
£60 food and treats
£125 activities (mantrailing)

£545 per month. Biggest cost is the boarding but with my work patterns impractical to do anything else. He's worth every penny and a great joy in my life!

Orangello · 21/06/2024 21:35

well, so far they have eaten a dozen or so houseplants, several IKEA kallax boxes, many many books, 2 tv remotes, 3 laundry baskets...does add up.

Springwatch123 · 21/06/2024 21:36

Labrador, almost two years old

Pet insurance - £35
working health plan - £20
food/treas - £50

Less regular
dog training - £60
toys - ad hoc (not cheap)
dog sitting - £30

To ask how much your dog costs per month?
StarDolphins · 21/06/2024 21:37

Shih Tzu 12…

Biscuits (Burns) £22 per month
Fresh chicken £16 per month
Insurance £39 per month
No dog walker/sitters etc
currently using my mums left over ITCH flea subscription flea tabs

However, what he gives me back in love, loyalty, happiness & fun is worth a million!

Edited to add £30 every 8 weeks for his groom!

familyissues12345 · 21/06/2024 21:37

Small 9kg dog - mixed poodle breed

Insurance - £45
Food £60
Dog Walker - £60
Groom -£20 ( £40 once every 7 weeks)
Flea/worming - I think £45 every 3 months

Worth every penny. Due to her size, she doesn't eat huge amounts so we buy the best quality, so she could be a bit cheaper.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 21/06/2024 21:41

Small terrier mix dog

Insurance £14 a month
Petplan for flea/worm stuff £12 a month
Food £25 a month

Treats, poo bags and other dog related bits maybe another £10 a month

So just over £60 a month ish.

CaptainOliviaBenson · 21/06/2024 21:45

8 year old Border Collie cross.
£32 per month on food.
£5 on toys.
£3 on flea/worming treatment.
£2.50 on poo bags.

£60 every 3 months for a groom, which would be £20 per month.
So about £62.50 per month.

StikItToTheMan · 21/06/2024 21:52

2 year old Springer Spaniel.

Food - £50 ish
Insurance - £21
Vets Pet Club (flea/worm/nails/vax) - £18
Overnight boarding - £30 a night x approx 25 nights a year. So average of £60 ish a month.

Add on the odd expense for a new lead or toy or something, probably £160 a month in total, on average. We don't need a walker and groom her ourselves.

I thought this was a lot but some of the costs on this thread are wild, for food especially. And I know allergies etc - ddog is allergic to all poultry, beef and grain so we've had to do a huge amount of research to find a good quality, grain free, fish kibble. But seriously, some of them 😱

DataPup · 21/06/2024 21:58

Food, treats and chews - £60 a month
Insurance - £30 a month
Worm count - £2 (we do this once a year, don't treat for fleas)
Incidentals (poo bags/toys/leads etc) - £10

Guessing at the incidentals averaging out, we haven't bought anything new this year beyond poo bags

That's costs each - we have 2 labs

user2037272727273 · 21/06/2024 22:03

Husky -

Food £25 per month
Grooming - £45 per month (90 every 2 weeks)
Treats £20 per month
Flea and worming treatment £14 per month

She currently is costing me £130-£200 a month in vet fees as she developed an allergy and had to keep going back for steroids/anti itch.

She isn't insured but if she was insured it would be about £100pm with a £250 excess and 25% of total cost on any treatment.

For a doggy daycare it's about £40-60 per day/overnight. So if we go away I pay about £50 a day roughly for dog sitter.

Dog walking I am at home so I don't do this but having enquired before it's £15-£20 for an hours walk.

DominoRules · 21/06/2024 22:03

Loads! 2.5 year old springer

Insurance - £45
Food - £140
Vet Plan for vaccinations and flea/worming - £20
Grooming/toys/leads - average out £20 a month??
Weekly activity - £120
Monthly gundog session - £30
Kennels - averages out to £25 a month

I don’t use a walker or daycare

RM2013 · 21/06/2024 23:40

We got our first dog thus year
Insurance £50 per year (could have got cheaper but we thought we might have to claim so stayed with kennel club insurance so hoping this reduces
food £40 per month
grooming £30 every 8 weeks
flea/worming £50 every 3 months
misc toys , treats etc £20 per month

hes priceless and can’t imagine life without him now

Netaporter · 21/06/2024 23:55

@Iamawomenphenominally probably wouldn’t recommend a Leonberger to keep costs down…😂

Insurance goes up to £170pcm next month
Grooming is £60pcm
Food is c.£140 pcm (raw fed)

Plus worming, treats, annual jabs and other ad hoc expenses. 🙈 This is me about the costs 😂

Serenity45 · 22/06/2024 00:11

3 year old lab
£20 pm insurance
£21pm vet plan inc boosters/flea/worm treatments
£20pm food (good quality but we buy in bulk)
£10pm average toys/treats

We brush her ourselves and bathe if she's filthy. Will send her to groomers twice a year for a 'proper' wash. This would average out at about £5pm

Nothing for walkers as we wfh
She usually goes to family if we holiday abroad but most UK trips are to dog friendly cottages. V occasionally goes to a home pet sitter we trust at £25 per night if family are busy average at £10pm over the year.

We realise we're lucky as she's a young healthy dog not needing a special diet/meds etc. Fully aware costs will rise in future years!

Mama2many73 · 22/06/2024 01:37

Large lab cross
Insurance £60
Vet cover £25
(this covers glands, nails, flea and worming, 2twice yearly check ups and a percentage off vets bills/meds)
Food about £50
Doggy Day Care -full day (7 - 5.30) is £29, only do as and when ie if we had builders in, I'm at a meeting
Treats £8
Toys , not monthly as and when
So all in all around £180 but he is BIG.

Holidays he's always come with us but I am looking at possible home boarder for him.

WalkingonWheels · 22/06/2024 01:49

Monthly costs of mine are:
Insurance - £20
Grooming - £50
Natural chews - £50
Raw food - £80
Enrichment foods/training treats - £40
Toys - £80
Garlic supplement for natural flea repellent - £5
Enrichment activities (dog field hire, agility hire, indoor play centre) - £60
Other miscellaneous things (poo bags, collars and leads, lickimats etc) £30

Just over £400 a month. Worth it.

Lilacapples · 22/06/2024 03:11

I’ve got two dogs but for one small cross breed dog it’s

£50 - food per month
£86 - insurance (she’s 10) per month
£90 - monthly medication which I claim back on insurance
£40 every 8 weeks for grooming
£40 - seresto flea collar (every 8 months)

The other dog - smell breed

£50 - food
£76 - insurance
£40 - flea collar (every 8 months)
no grooming, no medication

There’s probably about another £10-20 a month on top for treats.

£50 per year insurance! 🤦‍♀️. My two dogs are £160 a month!

Lilacapples · 22/06/2024 03:16

Kitkat1523 · 21/06/2024 09:39

Jack Russell/chihuahua cross. 12 years old
£20 p/m insurance
£50 p/m food and treats
£70 p/y vaccinations ….we also get worming tablets at same time ? Unsure of that cost
pay a bit extra at air bnbs and hotels when we go away and take the dog….say 5 to 10£ a night in a hotel
£40 new dog toys a year
£35 grooming x 3 times a year

Don’t pay for boarding as family have him when we are holdiay…..but buy wine/ crocs etc each time ….so about £30 each holiday we go on
we walk him ourselves

Reading this I don’t know why my dogs insurance is so high. I have a JRT x bichon who is 10 and it’s £86 a month and a JRT= who is I and it’s £76 a month 🤦‍♀️

My dogs saved my life and I will give them whatever they need (and lots of things they didn’t know they needed)

Well said Poppysmom you are my kind of person.

DBD1975 · 22/06/2024 03:34

OP you sound like a lovely person with so much love to offer, however, you are very sensible to consider the financial implications, unlike a lot of people.

Would you not consider fostering? It might be a suitable alternative for you and think of all the good you would be doing. If I was in a position where I wanted a dog but couldn't have one for financial reasons I would foster.

There is no doubt a foster organisation or greyhound rescue who would be more than grateful for your help.

Good luck with whatever you decide 🩶.

gillefc82 · 22/06/2024 04:44

3 dogs (2 Belgian Malinois’ and a Kangal) Monthly insurance - £34, £28, £64
Monthly vet plan (covering all flea and worming tablets plus discounted appointment fees and treatment costs) - £20, £20, £25
2 x 14kg bags of Kibble delivered every 5 weeks £61
3 crates of 24 tins of jelly dog food per week (£45x4) = £180 for the month
Secure dog field hire costs between 4-8 sessions £40-80
Probably another £20-30 on treats

So in total between £492 and £542 for the three. Expensive, but they are worth every penny!

Also, not a typical monthly cost, but we’ve just been on holiday abroad for a week, dogs in kennels for 8 days - £510

Phillipa12 · 22/06/2024 04:50

hattie43 · 22/06/2024 06:30
