Counting the days off. We've literally made a calendar with days left. It's that bad. Anyone else?

OP posts:

Yep. Sick of the SLT denial of poor behaviour. Loads of pieces of information on how to.improve our teaching. No.reference to the loud minority of disruptive pupils spoiling it for everyone.

paulhollywoodshairgel · 20/06/2024 19:48

I'm dreading it. Not enough leave to cover it all. Juggling kids and work. Then my baby goes to high school!!

It's my first proper year of having to do it. Thankfully I've made it add up this year with a lot of begging and shuffling but we've had to sacrifice having a family holiday to do so. The cost of putting a three year old into term time only pre school makes financial sense but then creates the holiday issues when he isn't old enough for school holiday clubs. Thank goodness he starts school next September so they can both go to clubs.

I don't know how full time working parents do it.

LoveWine123 · 20/06/2024 19:57

I can’t wait, seriously. My children are exhausted, I’m exhausted. I can’t get over how long the school year is in the UK with barely any time for children to be children.

PumpkinPie2016 · 20/06/2024 20:21

I'm certainly looking forward to it now! (Teacher who leads a core subject in secondary).

We have 4 weeks left and so much going on with reports/end of year trips/transition days/preparing for September/an event with tutor groups etc.
Plus, we will be teaching normal curriculum right to the end as we need to get to a certain point so that we have enough time to cover everything.

We are all shattered now, kids included.

I read the OP as being a parent, but first reply is from a teacher?

Interestingly i was going to say similar, but from a parent's point of view:

Sick of the poor behaviour and casual violence going on in DDs (yr5 village school). Daily emails from the school wrt things to pay for, things to remember but no reference to the loud minority of disruptive pupils spoiling it for everyone.

Yeah i'm counting down the days!!

Crunchymum · 20/06/2024 20:30

I'm torn as we all benefit from the structure and routine of being in school. Plus my eldest is off to secondary in September and I just wish things could stay as they are. I wish time would slow down.

However the kids are exhausted (especially DC3 who has SEN) and I'm exhausted. Between work, school, appointments, hobbies, clubs, social activities and just general life we all need a serious break.

I have 3 of the 6 weeks off and we are away for 10 days so we will definitely get the downtime we need but it preludes a big period of transition for us and I'm a little apprehensive. My "baby" going to big school.... it doesn't seem possible 😪

Hollowvoice · 20/06/2024 20:53

Cannot wait. Daily struggles to get one or both DC into school are exhausting. Then having to make up work time in evenings is exhausting. Try to keep the house tidy and washing/cooking etc in whatever time I have left in between all of that and the emotional support, also exhausting. Summer can be difficult in other ways but the break from the day to day (I work pretty much term time only) really helps.

Trinity69 · 20/06/2024 20:55

Work in a school and counting down the days. Have been since we went back after half term!

Summerfreezemakesmedrinkwine · 20/06/2024 20:57

Yeah, my youngest has a whole month to go and he could do with being off now. It's going to be slow going.

LawlorsNaa · 20/06/2024 21:09

Yes, we are dragging ourselves up every morning. Only 5.5 days left (Ireland). My two older girls are in secondary and finished the end of May.

MrsTartanTeacosy · 20/06/2024 21:18

We’ve a week left to go, and I’m dreading it tbh. And feel crap that I am. Mine are so routine focused they will still get up at exactly the same time, want breakfast at the same time, request we have the same music on at 8.30am, do reading and maths each morning etc. I have no family left or friends in the area so it’s pretty lonely at times over the summer, oh and we live somewhere very rural so restricted with activities (free or otherwise). Luckily, the children all like each other! And I can spend more time in the garden.
I am looking forward to sewing name tapes though, I love that job in the last couple of weeks of the holidays…I think because I remember as a child, watching my Mum doing it.

Kentuckycriedfrickin · 20/06/2024 21:52

Work in education too and also counting down the days.

We're all tired, the children are all tired, the parents are all tired, everyone is just tired. It gets to a point in the school year where everyone is simply done with it but has to struggle on for another 3-4 weeks.

I'm finished at the end of this term as I don't have it in me to continue on this career path, I'm mentally and emotionally exhausted.

ALPHAFEMALESINCEBIRTH · 20/06/2024 21:54

I think I (American) was a teenager when I realized that the UK doesn’t get three months off for summer like the US. Was it always like that?

I’m 38 and it’s always been the same for me and I’m pretty sure for my parents too. Standard six week summer hols (in wales anyway)

Arewealljustloosingtheplot · 20/06/2024 22:03

Yes my school refuser is counting down on a chart. Limping to the end of term.

TheFunSponge · 20/06/2024 22:07

I'm counting down the days until end of term then I never have to see my colleague again!

RocketPanda · 20/06/2024 22:12

In Ireland and my youngest finished I'm secondary at the end of May and the primary school is finished next week.

ghostyslovesheets · 20/06/2024 22:16

Yes - everyone in my team is term-time only apart my and my co worker - the summer means we can actually concentrate on OUR job and do way more 1-1 work and research - it's my 'down time' but actually my busiest time but I really enjoy it. Been a tough year this year!

Do they go back in September? And do you have half terms?

Iloveburgerswaymorethanishould · 20/06/2024 22:18

4 weeks tomorrow!! Really counting down as, like another poster, I work in a school!! Just over six weeks break ins very mick needed!!! My 5 year old might disagree though as he adores school and routine!! Booking him into a holiday summer camp thing to keep him stimulated ( and for a few child free days to catch up on housework/DIY). Already had one of our holidays this year so fun close to home is our plan!!! Then away for October half term 5 weeks after
we go back!! Term
time working is the best!!!

Youdontevengohere · 20/06/2024 22:22

Mixture. Looking forward to it as my kids have been miserable at school this year due to the shitty behaviour in the classrooms and the lack of control the staff appear to have. They complain every day that they can’t get their work done because other pupils are being disruptive.
Dreading it as finding holiday childcare for my disabled child is impossible, so we’re having to juggle/tag team/take unpaid leave so we can work. We’ll be working through the night a lot of the holidays to make up for hours missed in the day.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 20/06/2024 22:26

Yep. Teacher here. So looking forward to the holidays, although I'll have a lot of work to do over the summer, as we start teaching a new GCSE syllabus in September. My dc have already finished- dd is home from her first year at uni and ds did his last GCSE on Tuesday.

RocketPanda · 20/06/2024 22:27

Yes they go back in September and we have half terms as well as Christmas and Easter holidays.
Primary School is 8 years ( 5yrs approx to 13yrs approx) and secondary is 5 or 6 years. After the first three years of secondary they do a state exam and then there's an option of doing 4th year or transitional year. This year is not traditional curriculum but a chance for students to do other courses/activities and work experience.
Then back to academics for 5th and 6th year and then a state exam to decide for 3rd level.
