To bin a ruined expensive jumper

newmomaboutthreads · 20/06/2024 14:32

Help!!

I've shrunk my husbands jumper. I think it's quite expensive, it's Pal Zileri 100% extra fine Lana merino.

It has a hand wash symbol and so I just stuck in the machine on low heat. It would now fit a 5 year old!

Would I be unreasonable to just bin it and hope he never asks about it or can this be fixed at all?

I'm thinking bin it...

And it’s an interesting question as to why, say M&S or Uniqlo can produce wool or cotton that doesn’t shrink if you look at it a bit funny but the expensive brands are so bloody delicate?

I bought a designer jumper once (can’t remember who, I think maybe Donna Karan). I foolishly put it in the washing machine and it came out Barbie sized. At least it was my jumper bought with my own money though.

There would be better ways to stealth post Confused

People who buy expensive clothing can also shrink them

I'd blame him for buying an expensive, high maintenance jumper 😁

That would be my tactic too 😂

It’s fake wool or fake cotton

Then he should have done it himself. I have lots of very precious knitted garments and I'm very careful to never include them in the general laundry so I can handwash them myself. It's entirely my responsibility (and yes, DH does much of the laundry).

It's interesting how when a female posts that her DH has done this to an item of clothing loads of people pips up with "I bet he'd be more careful with his own things!"

Almost like he thinks his wife is the skivvy who owes him domestic services and he has the right to 'hold her accountable' Hmm

You're projecting a bit there. I can't see anything in the OPs posts that says anything like you've insinuated.

He could have put it in the wash basket without thinking. But she read the label and still put it in the machine. Just dump it on the side and say 'I left it out of the laundry I was doing as it says handwash.'

If she's this downtrodden, abused 'skivvy' that will face severe punishment for not lovingly washing his expensive jumper by hand, that's one thing. But there's nothing in her posts to say this is the case.

Have never seen this. But see lots of people on this thread telling her off for doing her husband's laundry wrong like we've slipped back a century.

Well, if you're going to do the laundry, do it right. It doesn't matter who is doing the laundry, if you take a task on you don't fuck it up and then decide to lie to your other half.

Yes, 'don't fuck up' is good life advice. But we all do it occasionally don't we. If someone else is doing us a favour and they fuck it up it calls for a bit of grace, assuming they say sorry, obviously. I agree about the lying making it much worse.

CookStrait · 20/06/2024 17:08

Tell him if he insists on buying this bollocks, then he can wash it himself.

But she couldn't be arsed reading the washing instructions, she actively ignored the instructions in her words, that doesn't call for a bit of grace imo

newmomaboutthreads · 20/06/2024 17:41

I wouldn't say I'm down trodden but just a mum trying to bash out the holiday washing and trying to get to bottom basket quickly. I tried my luck it failed.
If I hide it until he asks about it, then he can't get as annoyed about something that happened ages ago.
Also it wouldn't work to offer to replace it as it will annoy him more as we're married so makes no difference who buys it again.
I have seen you can get them on eBay and Vinted for £50 though so will keep my eye out for the exact same stupid jumper 🤦🏽‍♀️

I did this to my husbands once! I binned it and he's never even asked about it. Circa 4/5 years ago so I say bin it 🤣

Because its not real wool or cotton. if you look properly at the label. it's either man made fibres mixed with a little bit of wool or just man made fibres. usually mass fast fashion produced material.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/06/2024 18:11

It’ll be beyond saving, just bin it and tell him.

If it’s any consolation, I managed to wreck a pure wool jumper I’d actually knitted, the very first time I hand washed it, by mistakenly setting my new washing machine to rinse and spin, instead of just spin. It came out a quarter of the size, in felt. And the bloody wool had cost around £80.

Wrong Superwash wool can be 100% wool, it can also be a blend.

@newmomaboutthreads does he ever do laundry? Throw it in the mix if he does 🤣

but yeah we fess up to doing dumb things in my house. We also do our own laundry so that it’s our own fault if something gets ruined or preemptively absolve the one doing it if we ask for a favor.

Greenlittecat · 20/06/2024 18:22

I think I would sneak it into a load he put on and hope for the best tbh 😅

Look up Nancy Birtwhistle she has an excellent reel for saving a shrunken jumper. White vinegar and hair conditioner. I saved my cashmere sweater following her advice.

countcalculia · 20/06/2024 18:26

Can you not give it to a 5 yr old?

This made me lol.

OP, if you did that to my jumper I would be furious. I do my own washing and DH does his, I don't trust anyone with my clothes. Why doesn't he do his own washing.

WalkingonWheels · 20/06/2024 18:28

You've felted it. Nothing can be done.

Expensive jumpers are more difficult to take care of because the wool hasn't been chemically treated to make it washable. They're better quality and need to be treated that way.

Superwash wool is real wool 🙄

Probably because the yarn at M&S and Uniqlo is super wash treated as is most commercial yarn used for knitwear and the expensive jumpers are non super wash so in their more natural state. I’m a knitter and we have super wash treated wool that we can knit with too which is how I know.

Unless he feels you then compounded the carelessness by lying to him about it for ages.
