Kids TV shows feed bad behaviour and lack of respect

Does anyone else agree?

Mostly the US cartoons I'm seeing at the moment which seem to have a gang of kids basically showing disrespect teach other and their elders, being vulgar and talking shit.

I'm sure there are others, but these seem to appeal to my dd who has an attitude the size of a bus.

And the kids unfortunately have the option to watch it on loop, just to really hone their skills.

When I was a kid we watched the Raccoons and Dogtanian. I don't remember anything like what they have now.

I agree .

wandawaves · 18/06/2024 11:58

Agreed! I used to ban certain TV shows when my kids were little. And yes, they were US ones. The kids would just be that little bit more attitudey after watching them.

TrustPenguins · 18/06/2024 11:58

I agree.

I also used to LOVE Dogtanian!!

kinkytoes · 18/06/2024 12:02

It's not just games is it, we really have to vet EVERYTHING to try and keep our kids in the straight and narrow 😩

In the early 80s lots of my friends were banned from watching Grange Hill because of the bad behaviour and disrespect shown by children to teachers.

helpfulperson · 18/06/2024 12:03

But people said the same thing about Grange Hill back in the day.

Needmorelego · 18/06/2024 12:04

What exactly are you watching?
I don't know any children's animation shows that sounds like that.

dancinfeet · 18/06/2024 12:06

I was a kid of the 80s though to the 90s and I used to think that the kids on American tv programmes and films were cheeky to their parents and had attitude back then. If I had spoken to my parents like that I would have got my behind spanked, which is why I didn’t try to emulate them- even though I still loved watching the programmes.

Mayorq · 18/06/2024 12:07

I haven't really noticed it in the stuff my nearly 6 year old watches.

All fairly good messages have had to cut out 1 our 2 shows for being brain dead nonsense (chip n Dale Park life as it's an international show so just squeaks and noises, and Peppa for being a bit of a dick)

But the other stuff she watches seems fairly decent

Bluey (I know some people think she can be a bit "precocious" but I think it's a positive family dynamic being represented)
Lion guard
Gabby
Santiago of the sea

Strictlymad · 18/06/2024 12:09

I agree! Even in peppa pig mummy and daddy are idiots!

kinkytoes · 18/06/2024 12:09

At least GH was only once a week and they couldn't keep watching it constantly every single day.

Would love to hear more suggestions for positive shows.

The big one here is Total Dramarama. The theme tune strikes fear into my heart!!

there are plently if you are steaming!!
Nothing I can think of on mainstream tv!!
so what is your DC watching??

PippyLongTits · 18/06/2024 12:11

I agree. Even if the overall theme is teamwork and cooperation, there will still be lines of sassiness sprinkled through which get parroted out by the little ones watching. I took my DC to see Santa's last year and when Santa asked one of other the girls (maybe 5 or 6) what her name was. I assume that maybe she had seen Santa at a different grotto/event in the recent past, but she rolled her eyes and said "ugh, seriously?" [head whipping to one side] "Like you seriously don't know my name?" like a stroppy American teenager. There were various exchanges of looks and whispers from the adults so the other kids there then know it is something that gets a reaction. My DC(6) then had a phase of saying "Seriously?" at home too when asked practically anything.

He is now 7 and going through a "whatever" phase.

Even if they don't watch these things at home, their friends do and they will pick it up from them at school/clubs/trips to the grotto.

LauderSyme · 18/06/2024 12:11

I agree OP, I remember prohibiting ds from watching certain TV shows when he was younger, as they provided such bad examples of behaviour.

I can't recall now which ones bothered me but I am fairly sure they were mainly American.

EVHead · 18/06/2024 12:13

iCarly about 20 years ago. Every adult portrayed as an idiot and repeatedly disrespected by the “cool” kids. DD was cheeky as hell if she watched that.

TwoThousandAcresofBlueSkyThinking · 18/06/2024 12:14

I haven't seen any of the programmes mentioned but I remember back in the day thinking that the adults in Neighbours spent far too long apologising to the younger ones for whatever their crime of the day wasn't.

Needmorelego · 18/06/2024 12:44

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator my daughter mostly watches things like Pokémon - which is pretty much about playing a battle (essentially a sport that you have to train for). Trying your best in that battle but it doesn't matter if you fail. Taking care of your team (ie your Pokémon). Knowing when to stop to protect your Pokémon from harm.
Standing by your friends and respecting and learning from those who are older and wiser.
Also a bit of stopping the naughty folks from causing trouble.
She also has recently got into DC/Marvel stuff. Which is basically good vs evil.

You are absolutely NBU. I am totally chilled about kids TV but that programme is banned, the characters are obnoxious and the theme tune bores holes in my head. See also Teen Titans

Needmorelego · 18/06/2024 12:49

@tinygigolo I love Teen Titans.
It's a bit silly but again it's a "work together as a team, respect each other differences and good vs evil (good wins).

GoingUpUpUp · 18/06/2024 12:50

I agree! I’ve actually stopped mine watching Netflix. They can watch the iPlayer which seems a little better in terms of content (Although Tracy Beaker is banned too!)

My school was very much like Grange Hill, with the teachers being rude and horrible to the kids, too.

AnnaMagnani · 18/06/2024 12:51

Dogtanian is available on YouTube.

It's brilliant

CowboyJoanna · 18/06/2024 12:52

Sad state of affairs is even the worst kids in Grange Hill are saints compared to a lot of the dragged up little shits you get in schools today, teachers can't even tell them off anymore Sad

Needmorelego · 18/06/2024 12:54

Dogtanian was pretty irritating to be honest.
All his constant wailing for Juliet.
"Julieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet Julieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet"
Every single episode 😂
