Kids TV shows feed bad behaviour and lack of respect

Does anyone else agree?

Mostly the US cartoons I'm seeing at the moment which seem to have a gang of kids basically showing disrespect teach other and their elders, being vulgar and talking shit.

I'm sure there are others, but these seem to appeal to my dd who has an attitude the size of a bus.

And the kids unfortunately have the option to watch it on loop, just to really hone their skills.

When I was a kid we watched the Raccoons and Dogtanian. I don't remember anything like what they have now.

Thought experiment:

If Bad TV can turn a good kid into a bad kid...
Does good TV turn a bad kid into a good kid?
Or is it far more likely that real world influences shape children far more than any TV show ever could?

CabbageBearGoat · 18/06/2024 12:55

I remember being banned from watching Tracey Beaker by my mum as she didn't like my "attitude" after watching it. I thought it was a great show! 🤣

tinygigolo · 18/06/2024 12:47

You are absolutely NBU. I am totally chilled about kids TV but that programme is banned, the characters are obnoxious and the theme tune bores holes in my head. See also Teen Titans

Teen titans was top of my banned list. So obnoxious.

Devilsmommy · 18/06/2024 12:57

Pinkywoo · 18/06/2024 12:13

As a side note The Racoons had the best theme tune ever.

I found recently that you can watch the raccoons on Roku. Loved that cartoon as a kid😍

longdistanceclaraclara · 18/06/2024 13:14

I always thought Peppa was a bossy so and so.

YesYesAllGood · 18/06/2024 13:15

Agree. Sarcasm/cynicism is very much the default interaction in lots of kids' programmes. It can be really funny but when that type of humour is relentless, kids are going to pick up on the attitude.

FizzyStream · 18/06/2024 13:15

Completely off topic (which I agree with btw) but I loved the Raccoons and actually mentioned it to DH the other day and told him about the weird looking character with the long pink nose and he said I was making it up!

FizzyStream · 18/06/2024 13:17

Anyone remember 80 days around the world? I loved the theme tune Grin

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 18/06/2024 13:20

George Pig seemed like a terrible influence too, not just Peppa. Always yelling "no" and crying every time he didn't get his own way.

Used to love Dogtanian and Racoons, but couldn't tell you what moral message I took from them.

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator my daughter mostly watches things like Pokémon - which is pretty much about playing a battle (essentially a sport that you have to train for). Trying your best in that battle but it doesn't matter if you fail. Taking care of your team (ie your Pokémon). Knowing when to stop to protect your Pokémon from harm.
Standing by your friends and respecting and learning from those who are older and wiser.
Also a bit of stopping the naughty folks from causing trouble.
She also has recently got into DC/Marvel stuff. Which is basically good vs evil.

thanks
never seen the pokemon stuff vut seen the Marvel stuff, pretty violent from the bit's i have seen but the kids know who is good and who is evil and that works IMO.
Enjoy the rest of the day!!

GingerPirate · 18/06/2024 15:53

The rest is up to the parents.
😳
Surprise!

saoirse31 · 18/06/2024 16:02

Parent your children.

AnnaMagnani · 18/06/2024 16:05

@SprigatitoYouAndIKnow surely the moral message of Dogtanian is 'One for all and all for one!'

That and 'Muskerhounds are always ready'

longdistanceclaraclara · 18/06/2024 16:11

iCarly - I'd blocked it out, and the Thundermans. Both were banned here. God they were awful.

I don’t like the sassy TV shows either. Turn 8/9 year olds into would-be 14 year olds.

YouTube is far far worse though.

Oh I had forgotten how good this song was! And now I'm finding loads of different versions on iTunes!

kinkytoes · 18/06/2024 18:16

Glad to have rekindled the love for Raccoons and Dogtanian! I'm defo going to look them up again myself (I missed a LOT of episodes as a kid) 😁

What exactly are you watching?
I don't know any children's animation shows that sounds like that.

Me either 🫤

Jifmicroliquid · 18/06/2024 18:28

Me and my brother weren’t allowed to watch Grange Hill.

Beyond4Souls · 18/06/2024 18:32

This is why I like Bluey, the parents tell the little ones off for bad behaviour in it Grin

AnnaMagnani · 18/06/2024 19:32

I was allowed to watch Grange Hill but my memory is that it was expected that they respected the teachers, some of the teachers (Mr Bronson) were properly scary, and it was clear the program thought some of the kids were badly behaved.

Pinkbits · 18/06/2024 19:35

There's all the idiocy of youtube now as well but perhaps you banned that already?

Pepper Pig is a complete bratty arsehole and dont get me started on Bing.

LittleBitAlexisLaLaLaLaLa · 18/06/2024 19:40

Currently pregnant with my 3rd and my current youngest child has already decided to ban his new sibling from watching Peppa Pig. I’m on his side with this, she’s an odious little fanny. In turn, I had to ban horrid Henry for a while for similar reasons.

Give me scooby doo, rugrats and duck-tales any day.
