Too old and fat for new tattoos?

I’ve always loved art and tattoos and wanted several, but stopped when younger out of respect for my parents who absolutely hated them and were quite vocal about it. Then, in my 20s, I got two small tattoos in discrete locations and my parents were ok about it, but not exactly fans, and I got the standard “well, if you like them…” passive aggressive comments. But now, my much younger sister, who has a very “I don’t give a fuck” attitude, is covered in them, including one on her neck!! My parents haven’t batted an eyelid. So, I feel like I also want to say “fuck it” and get the art I’ve always desired. But, I’m 37, plus-sized (18-20), with two kids and a very average lifestyle (I could be considered boring, but I’m happy). So WIBU and weird to get some more tats? I’d love a half sleeve or maybe something on a thigh. I dress on the slightly alternative, gothy side, so my tattoos would be in a similar vein. Is this an early midlife crisis?!

They look awful on everyone old, young, fat, thin at the time of getting them and look even worse 20 years later.
It’s your body though, if you want to get a horrible neck tattoo get one.

That is just your opinion, plenty of people think Tattoos look great, everyone is different and I say that as a person with no Tattoos and no plans to ever get one. I’m not a massive fan of Tattoos but I still think some look nice.

Ive had tattoos sporadically since i was 18, in the last few years ive stepped it up a gear and i have 2 full sleeves now with no plans to stop anytime soon!

I saw go for it, better to regret what you did do then spend a life time regretting what you didnt!

ShipshapeShore · 16/06/2024 23:01

I like tattoos. I often find myself staring when people have lots or full sleeves as I think they're part of a person's story and I find them fascinating. I only have one - can't quite seem to find the spare cash to get more! Please get whatever you want, you know you'll love them so who cares what anyone thinks. And post pictures 😊.

😳. Yes that’s definitely the criteria, if you are not fat enough or old enough you get told to eat more and come back in a few years.

dont have any personally, but this is a sad, childish comment.

But all full sleeves are just a dark blur, unless you're up really close.

Sorry, I’m not sure of your opinions of tattoos there? 🤔

🤣🤣

QuitChewingMyPlectrum · 16/06/2024 23:18

Got my first one late thirties (very discreet) and loved it. Was diagnosed with ADHD and autism, had a year of therapy to figure out who the real me was, and had 2 more at 44 as a symbol of letting people see the real me. I like meaningful tattoos and chose mine for that reason.

Opinionwontchangeluv · 16/06/2024 23:19

Don't be stupid

tahinitoast · 16/06/2024 23:20

Do it!! Research your tattooist well, go on recommendation, and look at unfiltered photos of their work. Go and have a chat with the tattooist about what you want, often tattoo artists are loathe to copy someone else's work outright, mine won't do that and instead tattoos from images of the thing you want ie if you wanted a peacock he would take from pictures of peacocks as opposed to pictures of tattoos of peacocks!

I'm 40 and covered in them, love them. My advice would be to decide on one you want, wait 6-12 months and if you still want it then go for it. Removal is painful and expensive so make sure you want that design forever.

You must have such a delightful life to have become that bitter 😂

I’ve got to admit, I did chuckle to myself reading this comment, because I realised it sounds like I’m a child asking for their parents’ permission to do something! Oh dear.
Yes, I’m nearly 40, I’m going to fucking do it!

Good for you, OP!

KreedKafer · 17/06/2024 10:49

No they aren't. You can have a full sleeve of any style of tattoo. You're thinking of black and grey realism. You can also have a full sleeve of very clear, bold colour. You can also have a full sleeve that still leaves a lot of bare skin. All 'full sleeve' means is that the tattoo goes from shoulder to wrist. It doesn't mean every part of the skin is covered in ink.

GasPanic · 17/06/2024 10:52

Surely the fatter you are the more tattoos you can have.

Unless I'm missing something.

PeonySeasons · 17/06/2024 10:55

I had a tiny tattoo aged 18, hidden by my knickers so no one really sees it! I then had a massive tattoo on my thigh aged 37 and size 22.

I'm not getting younger, and I'm probably not going to lose a shit load of weight, so it was time to get on with it!

Go do it!

BobShark · 17/06/2024 10:57

Yes do it!
They are for you, it matters not what anyone thinks, although if it's a face tattoo perhaps have a proper think and be sure.

I had one at 16, my very conservative parents didn't speak to me for weeks after. I'm now in my 40s, it doesn't look like it did on my young body but it's another part of my story, I'd like a few more, but like you have been sputtering back and forth about whether I'm too old and or chunky but realised that I don't care.

I would also say they are much much more mainstream and acceptable socially now, I go to the gym, beach, pool daily and it's more unusual to see someone without a tattoo.

Floorbard · 17/06/2024 10:58

Do it! I’ve been pregnant/breastfeeding for over 4 years and have a list of tattoos I’m planning to get when my daughter stops breastfeeding!

Disagree - there are huge variations in designs, skills and colours.

This guy for example, is absolutely bloody incredible:

Or

SwedeCarrotLimes · 17/06/2024 11:02

I could understand DP stance if it was an impulse decision, but you've clearly thought about it long and hard so go for it, if it's something you want.

I feel parents love throwing passive aggressive opinions in whether it's potential baby names, colour of car you intend to go for etc. What's important is you make choices that are right for you, and to appease parents.

But that's still going to be a dark blur if lets say for example you're sitting opposite someone on a train?

You'd have to get uncomfortably close to that stranger (unless you happened to be sitting next to them anyway) to see the details.

I just wondered how close the PP was getting to strangers 😁

TheGoddessFrigg · 17/06/2024 11:07

Im 57 and had my first tattoo at 56. I now have 8 and am planning for another one when i reach halfway to my goal weight.
Tattoos made me feel good about my body when I was at my heaviest. I love mine and am too old to give a shit about other people's opinions 😀

Megifer · 17/06/2024 11:25

Get it done op! I'm in my 40's and have a full sleeve on one arm and a blackout on the other. Have saved a fortune on fake tan 😬 am currently deciding what to have next and where.

The Buffalo Bills will be here soon to say clean skin looks better 😂
