Too old and fat for new tattoos?

Tattoothoughts · 16/06/2024 19:21

I’ve always loved art and tattoos and wanted several, but stopped when younger out of respect for my parents who absolutely hated them and were quite vocal about it. Then, in my 20s, I got two small tattoos in discrete locations and my parents were ok about it, but not exactly fans, and I got the standard “well, if you like them…” passive aggressive comments. But now, my much younger sister, who has a very “I don’t give a fuck” attitude, is covered in them, including one on her neck!! My parents haven’t batted an eyelid. So, I feel like I also want to say “fuck it” and get the art I’ve always desired. But, I’m 37, plus-sized (18-20), with two kids and a very average lifestyle (I could be considered boring, but I’m happy). So WIBU and weird to get some more tats? I’d love a half sleeve or maybe something on a thigh. I dress on the slightly alternative, gothy side, so my tattoos would be in a similar vein. Is this an early midlife crisis?!

Do it. Get them.

Summerflames · 16/06/2024 20:18

I got my tatt at 36. Planning on more now I'm 38. Just need to decide what I want.

My sister asked me if it was a mid-life crisis 😅 I told her no, it's a glow-up.

theowlwhisperer · 16/06/2024 20:23

you won't look any younger, your skin won't look any younger without tattoo. Even if you were 80 years old, you wouldn't be too old for goodness sakes.

Too fat? It's up to you. If you are planning on trying a new lifestyle and genuinely intend to lose weight, I might wait, your skin will take a beating. If you are not too worried about the skin getting a bit crunched up, again, go for it.

We are all getting older. It's tiresome when people shout "midlife crisis" when you have to wait a bit to have time/ money/ or chance to do something, anything.

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 16/06/2024 20:28

Go for it OP!

PurpleWhiteGreen123 · 16/06/2024 20:29

I want one.
I'm 46 and plus sized.
Just divorced, my ex hated tattoos on women and I always wanted one, but out of "respect" I held back.
My ex's nephew is in his early 20s and has some awesome tatts, but my ex thought they were ugly.
Yes, I'm going through a midlife crisis, doing stuff I was never allowed to during my marriage, but if I don't do them now, I will forever have regrets.
Life is short. Find a reputable artist and go for it!

BigPussyEnergy · 16/06/2024 20:30

I got my first for my 50th birthday and I don’t give a fuck what anyone thinks tbh. Now or in 20 years time. I definitely want more too.

I think they look awesome on someone curvy and quirky and it sounds like you’ll have something unusual and personal. I kind of wish mine was a bit less generic but I was so eager to get one done that I couldn’t wait to come up with something else!

Lovemusic82 · 16/06/2024 20:34

Never too old or too fat 😉

Im 42, I have some pretty awful body art from when I was in my late teens, if I had the money I would have something to cover them, maybe a sleeve or bigger brighter tattoos (mine have faded).

Those moaning that they look awful….that’s your personal choice, OP likes them so she should get them.

Unforgettablefire · 16/06/2024 20:37

37 too old? Bloody hell no way some people haven't even got their first at that age! Go for it 😁

MistressoftheDarkSide · 16/06/2024 20:37

Another here saying go for it.

I only have one small tattoo on my upper arm but always wanted more - alas, finances don't allow at present, but I really want a replica of one my late DP had on his chest - a sort of burning heart design which I'd like his portrait in as well. At 55 I think I'm allowed to do that, and sod everyone else. He had loads of tattoos and they reflected his unique personality and style - every one had a meaning.

As he would have said - wave your freak flag high ❤️‍🔥

DracoDormiensNumquamTittilandum · 16/06/2024 20:38

Get the tattoos! I'm older than you and not a sylph but I love mine and I'm going to get more!! Go for it

LondonFox · 16/06/2024 20:42

Unless you are decomposing corpse in a pool of oil, you are not to old or fat for it.

That being said, think about a job you do, future career and implications of visible tatoos and message they have.

Penguinfeet24 · 16/06/2024 20:42

Never too old or fat! I'm 45, size 18 and I just got a new one on my arm which ended up being massive and I love it! Now planning the next one! When anyone says 'what do you think you'll look like at 70 with that on you?' I say exactly what I look like now, but older! '. Your life, your body, have what you like, when you like - you only get one life.

DramaAlpaca · 16/06/2024 20:43

I'll admit that I thoroughly dislike tattoos.

But OP, you're 37, plenty old enough to decide on what you want to do with your own body. You know now that it doesn't matter what your parents think. It's nothing to do with a midlife crisis, more about realising that yes you can do what you want with your own body. You want to do it, so do it!

BookArt · 16/06/2024 21:40

Life is short, do what YOU want!!

SummerSnowstorm · 16/06/2024 21:44

The later in life you get them the less distorted and messy they'll ultimately end up.
However I would only get them if you're planning on staying the same size. If you've gained weight after recently having children etc and are planning on dropping a bit then I'd wait until you are your permanent size

ShowerOfShites · 16/06/2024 21:44

I hate tattoos on everyone but the important thing is how you feel about them.

You obviously love them so go for it.

I’m not sure there’s any such thing as a ‘permanent’ size?

I’ve got to admit, I did chuckle to myself reading this comment, because I realised it sounds like I’m a child asking for their parents’ permission to do something! Oh dear.
Yes, I’m nearly 40, I’m going to fucking do it!

You're 37?? I got my first at 50! Go for it!

They look awful on everyone old, young, fat, thin at the time of getting them and look even worse 20 years later.
It’s your body though, if you want to get a horrible neck tattoo get one.

No they don't!

Who are you to decide what looks good?

I was 50 when I had my first tattoo. I had it to cover a scar.
Wish I had it done years ago.
Go for it. You won’t regret it. 💐

RicePuddingWithCinnamon · 16/06/2024 22:51

Tattoos aren’t just for young skinny people.
Go for it. Post a pic!

idontthinkimunresonable · 16/06/2024 22:54

I'm saying no because I think they look cheap. But it's not my body!

I kind of agree with this! Confused
