To complain about this cab driver?

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 16/06/2024 14:53

Went on a night out last night, and for the first time in ages took a cab rather than an Uber. I will accept that I have a small percent of the blame as I was chattier than usual (which is not at all) and I did engage in conversation.

Conversation turned to my family and I said I only had one child to which he made a few comments like "does your husband not want more? Is he not angry? You're lucky he's so accepting " and similar stuff. This is where I clammed up and started making non committal noises and very short answers. He got the hint and changed the subject so while very annoying, I wasn't quite pissed off yet.

Then he asked where I'm from and I (stupidly) answered honestly. Then he started with comments about women from my country, how beautiful we are, how nice, home makers - think comments similar to advertising on mail brides type of websites. His friend has a wife from there and she is so great, he'd like a wife like that . Even asked if I'm like that . While it might sound positive to some there was a really sleazy vibe to it all, which I've encountered several times before and I recognise a mile away. Almost a fetishisation. This really bothered me , on top of his previous comments.

I went on my phone and completely ignored him until he eventually stopped.

Would I be unreasonable to complain to the cab company?

Nah you missed your opportunity at the time. Move on

Yeah, I know we're supposed to be all strong and independent and brave and feisty and call out shit whenever and wherever , but I'm still uncomfortable picking on men's bad behaviour at 1 am in the morning in their car.

I’d let it go to be honest.

ShowerOfShites · 16/06/2024 15:28

Nah I wouldn't bother.

He doesn't sound like the type of person I'd like to get into a conversation with, but that doesn't mean it's worthy of complaint.

Maybe they should since they're complaining all over the place about losing business and struggling to make ends meet.

So are most cab companies to be honest, but that's mainly due to Uber/Bolt etc.

It's just easier even if you have to pay a bit more.

ladyofshertonabbas · 16/06/2024 15:31

Let it go. He’s a cabbie, not a diplomat.

StripedTomatoes · 16/06/2024 15:31

I just wouldn't use that cab company again.

Fair enough. I definitely won't.

I didn't make him talk to me or asked his opinion, thus putting him on the spot.

It looks like some people have such low opinions of cab drivers , that no expectations are necessary. That's rather shitty... to cab drivers.

How have you managed to twist that? 😂 😳

And he's allowed to chat without being 'made' to by his passengers.

You did't like what he said and that's your prerogative but it was also his, to say what he did.

AmusedMaker · 16/06/2024 15:52

I only ever get black cabs and they never talk to me at all! 😄
never used Uber as don’t want apps that take my money.

It's not about cab drivers vs Uber drivers (and it's weird you are mentioning it), it's about that one driver.

Up to you if you complain but what are you hoping to achieve? Him getting fired or not being prioritised for other jobs? Even if the company tells him to be careful what he says in the cab he could deny it and say he had to reject your drunken advances and now you are bitter? They won't check the internal cctv for that. So what are you after?

His conversation was a tad suggestive, smutty and over familiar. I think it’s worth phoning the cab company and saying it was not acceptable.

Are there any limits to that or can they say anything they want because... cabbies?

OP posts:
pinkdelight · 16/06/2024 16:05

You get all sorts of cabbies with all sorts of opinions, it's always been like that and if you don't want to engage in their conversation then you don't have to. I don't think it needs a complaint in this case. If it gets that way then who's gonna bother being a cabbie ferrying people around at 1am. It's hardly a dream job and if he had tip-top social skills he might do something else.

Youcantellalotofthingsabouttheflowers · 16/06/2024 16:08

Oh for Gods sake. Let it go.

Is there a shortage of cab drivers that I wasn't aware of?

OP posts:
parentfodder · 16/06/2024 16:14

I don't think it's wrong to make the company aware. They may speak to him or it might form part of a picture of his behaviour or they might ignore it. I wouldn't expect any response tho

EmeraldRoulette · 16/06/2024 16:15

@ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat I’m familiar with that whole cultural stereotype and some men actually use it as a way of chatting up, as you will know

if a cabbie started on like that I’d be nervous to report but I’d not use them again

Sorry this happened. I know it’s horrible. I’m surprised posters are minimising it. I suspect if you’d not raised the cultural issue you’d have got more sympathy.

edit - I think there might be a shortage of cabbies in some places but that’s not really relevant.

Pantaloons99 · 16/06/2024 16:18

I'd leave it just because it isn't worth the stress and sadly so many people out there probably think this way. I get why you didn't say anything at the time. In the moment it's often better to say nothing.

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 16/06/2024 16:20

While it might sound positive to some there was a really sleazy vibe to it all, which I've encountered several times before and I recognise a mile away

None of us were there, and you know how it made you feel so don't know why people are minimising.
So YANBU, he could be like this or worse with others.
