'When lesser mortals would have stayed at home, Catherine proved that the show goes on' | Writes @AllisonPearson in the telegraph

I find this indescribably offensive

I am a "lesser" cancer patient because I didn't attend the trooping of the colour? Ok, but I attended as many days of work as I could, and as many hospital appointments as was required, and that mean a mile walk to the station each time. And in the months I could not return to school premises I undertook small amounts of voluntary work in order to keep in touch with the world and work on my stamina

And I coped without any income at all in the 5 months it took the DWP to process my ESA claim - did this "greater" cancer patient do this?

I don't blame Princess Catherine. She is just muddling through the best she can like all of us, trying to cope with treatment, keep up her spirits, provide happy times for her family, be a useful citizen, and hope for the future

But how ignorant do you have to be to write that other cancer patients are "lesser mortals" - and how could an editor let that pass? Were they asleep at their desk?

Please complain or suggest any other way you can to react to this, and get it taken down, and get an apology - this has caused distress among many families this morning. I am not on twitter myself, can people who are on twitter say something please?

Good grief how meanspirited

I think that you are massively overthinking this.

Totally agree

Pearson is a cunt

really, when was the last time you were called a "lesser mortal" as a cancer patient in the national press?

AP has a tin ear for tone.

In the (quite likely) event that I have cancer at some point in my life, I will stay at home with the duvet over my head if I feel like it.

saveforthat · 16/06/2024 09:44

I think you have got the wrong end of the stick. In fact you have probably got the wrong stick. Or not even a stick.

absolutely, and so you should, if you feel like it - and sometimes that is all that is possible. And anyone who calls you a "lesser mortal" because of it in the national press deserves to be sacked

I think it is the press trying to suck up after fueling the mass prying into her health a couple of months ago.

midgetastic · 16/06/2024 09:45

She was doing her job when she can

As you did yours

Why do you think you are being accused of being lesser ?

If you had been super rich with no need to work , would you have worked as much as you did ?

Stop looking for offence

sorry, I have just been called a "lesser mortal" for staying at home (some of the time) when I have cancer. I have the right end of the right stick

Even some of the comments on the Telegraph article are quite sarcastic about her tone, it’s not completely landed with her target audience as it’s so OTT.

saveforthat · 16/06/2024 09:46

What I think it means is, some people, if they were in that privileged position of having all their needs met and not having to do a regular job would not have bothered to go.

I think I have been called lesser, because I have been called lesser, and yes, when I couldn't do paid work I did voluntary work

Alison Pearson has made a career out of saying offensive and thoughtless things.

The media is full of journalists who spend all their days churning out absolute inanities and obsequious nonsense about the royal family. Editors let it pass as it's how they make their brass.

I'm not on Twitter so can't comment on there but I guess Pearson only writes crap to get a response and that no response is the best answer to her perpetual shitehousery.

I wish you well OP. Don't let the bastards get you down.

or might not have been able to go, you don't get a choice when you have cancer, there are days you can do things and days you cannot do things. You are not in any way a "lesser mortal" if you cant do something today, or if you cant do something ever again

I would see you attending work as the equivalent of Catherine attending a royal duty - if anything, a greater show of strength given the effort of your journey.

Pearson's comment is tone deaf.

Cattery · 16/06/2024 09:50

I think it’s poorly worded but I think the gist is that she will have the eyes of the world on her whereas the rest of us are far luckier in the respect that we don’t. We aren’t “lesser” we are able to be private

Icarus40 · 16/06/2024 09:52

But you are saying that you did go out and about - your show did go on. Hospital appointments, voluntary work etc. So you'd be in the same category as Catherine by this logic, rather than the 'lesser mortals' category.

It's a stupid and hurtful thing to write either way though and I can see why it would upset people.

Wimbledonmum1985 · 16/06/2024 09:53

Gosh, I have had cancer and take no offence whatsoever in that. Fair play to Catherine, I know how hard it is to get up and play a role when feeling wretched. Definitely a lot of overthinking here.

DirtyCheeseBurger · 16/06/2024 09:53

I agree.very tone deaf. Wishing you all the best x

It is offensive. We need to acknowledge that the royals are not running their own households, or fully looking after their children. That frees up energy to turn up for events. Which entails having someone turn up to do hair/makeup, get in a car and stand around a bit. As the OP says, there's more required to attend hospital appointments/treatments, for us 'lesser mortals'.

It shows the lack of gratitude for the privilege of wealth and status. There might be lesser mortals in their ranks, but you'd be pushed to find them "below stairs".
