so am I "lesser" by default, or "greater" cos I've done more than peer out of a window?

'When lesser mortals would have stayed at home, Catherine proved that the show goes on' | Writes @AllisonPearson in the telegraph

I find this indescribably offensive

I am a "lesser" cancer patient because I didn't attend the trooping of the colour? Ok, but I attended as many days of work as I could, and as many hospital appointments as was required, and that mean a mile walk to the station each time. And in the months I could not return to school premises I undertook small amounts of voluntary work in order to keep in touch with the world and work on my stamina

And I coped without any income at all in the 5 months it took the DWP to process my ESA claim - did this "greater" cancer patient do this?

I don't blame Princess Catherine. She is just muddling through the best she can like all of us, trying to cope with treatment, keep up her spirits, provide happy times for her family, be a useful citizen, and hope for the future

But how ignorant do you have to be to write that other cancer patients are "lesser mortals" - and how could an editor let that pass? Were they asleep at their desk?

Please complain or suggest any other way you can to react to this, and get it taken down, and get an apology - this has caused distress among many families this morning. I am not on twitter myself, can people who are on twitter say something please?

You went to work when you could. She's gone to work when she could.

This ^^

Don't upset yourself over silly journalism.

Maybethisyearornext · 16/06/2024 09:46

sorry, I have just been called a "lesser mortal" for staying at home (some of the time) when I have cancer. I have the right end of the right stick

Why are you staying at home? Because you feel rubbish and have been going through shit.

So has she.

She may be very privileged in a number of ways, but what you DON'T have is a huge public expectation to get your makeup on and parade yourself in front of thousands of people.

She will have wanted to stay at home, but she has pressures that normal people like the rest of us just don't have.

You are overthinking the phrase "lesser mortal", but I do think it will have taken her a huge amount of strength to do that event.

You don't need to take offence from everything.

Sahara123 · 16/06/2024 10:22

Electrickity · 16/06/2024 10:18

Given the nature of the article, she could have used a different phrase.

However, you are taking it personally. That was not the intent, and they weren't making a statement about cancer patients. I'm sure you know 'lesser mortals' is used as a joke, not literally.

Not really any jokes about cancer to be honest.

lollipoprainbow · 16/06/2024 10:22

The level of sycophantic comments in the media about her appearance yesterday is ridiculous.

I like her but her cancer experience is vastly different from mere mortals.

Electrickity · 16/06/2024 10:23

Not really any jokes about cancer to be honest.

What do you mean by this?

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 16/06/2024 10:26

It's the ridiculous sycophantic nonsense, they treat her like she's Mother Theresa or the second coming of christ. Like her showing up in a nice frock will make all the shit going on disappear.

A Brit winning Wimbledon, England winning the Euros and a new government will make me more happy than see Kate turn up to Tropping the Colour.

They also have a short memory not 15 years ago she was being called Waity Katie.

I wish her well, Like I do everyone who has cancer (My Dad, uncle and cousin all have it).

Tontostitis · 16/06/2024 09:40

Good grief how meanspirited

Did you wake up this morning planing to attack a cancer patient on behalf of the Daily Telegraph, or did you just decide to see where the day took you?

Blackcats7 · 16/06/2024 10:30

A very ignorant piece of writing. So much of this happens to us as people with cancer. We all cope with cancer as best we can and nobody can judge anybody else’s experience as it is different for us all.
I am also sick to death (pun intended) of being “inspiring” or “tragic” or a “warrior”.
I am not “fighting cancer” I am enduring it and breathing in and out until the day I can’t anymore. That is all. And all the “positive mindset” stuff is utter bollocks too and can just fuck off. It is science that will or won’t save lives not painting on a smile and pretending all will be fine.
It sometimes seems we are viewed as a group of sort of anti pedophiles which everyone can agree to pity and patronise rather than hate. Bit like puppies.
I have been sent unwanted fucking “thoughts and prayers” more times than I have had hot dinners.
Whilst support is welcome patronage and stereotyping is not.
And whilst I am on my soapbox neither do I want to hear about your auntie/neighbour/ grannie who had cancer or that you have heard that juicing/ crystals/ running widdershins around a toadstool cures cancer either.

TheYoungestSibling · 16/06/2024 10:30

I was signed off the entire time I was having cancer treatment. Day after day in bed unable to do more than stagger to the loo and back to bed.

Does that make me a lesser mortal than you for the days you did work or volunteering?

sweetnessandlighter · 16/06/2024 10:32

It's fucking disgusting.

Kate has 24 hour a day care from the best medical team money can buy. She has a nanny, and chefs, personal trainers, makeup artists, hairdressers and stylists on tap. She hasn't worked for six months and now riding in a carriage and standing on a balcony is hailed as some kind of magnificent effort. She does a tiny fraction of what most cancer patients in this country do and is beatified by Pearson and her ilk.

CurlewKate · 16/06/2024 10:32

Alison Pearson is a seriously appalling human being. Appalling.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/06/2024 10:35

QK is doing her job, you have been doing your job, and if either of you were too ill to go to work you would have sensibly stayed home. No need to get worked up about it.

no of course it doesn't - that is the whole point- many people will have had a far greater struggle that princess Catherine, and many will have done what they can, whether that is more or less than she has done is not up to them, it is up to the cancer - and no one is "lesser" than anyone else

And sone won't have done what they can

You have interpreted it as a dig at you when in fact it could just as easily be read as " people with cancer who make an effort to work are amazing people "

but who defines "making the effort"? for some, sitting up in bed will have taken a lot more than trooping the colour, yesterday. attempting to smile and look grateful that your son has made you a cup of tea could be the full extent of what you can manage - that does not make anyone a "lesser mortal"

To be fair (which is more than Pearson deserves since she is never fair to others), I imagine she'd say she was talking about how other people in Catherine's exact situation may behave ie if Kate was a lesser mortal, she'd have stayed home given the specific circumstances of her life.

I take your point on the tone though. But really, her articles are often unpleasant and I think she can very reasonably be ignored.
She also misses out the king from her fawning - he has cancer and turns up for events.

Even given this interpretation, this ignores the fact that Charles, who is also undergoing cancer treatment, turned up as well.

Warmfeet · 16/06/2024 10:43

In fairness you didn’t have half of twitter speculating that your dh had killed you, and that that was why you weren’t out and about.

FictionalCharacter · 16/06/2024 10:43

Allison Pearson writes the most horrible spiteful things at the best of times. She's also thick as mince. Take no notice of her.

Beezknees · 16/06/2024 10:47

YANBU but I'm a republican so I can't stand the fawning over the royals in general.

"Lesser mortals" is such a ridiculous turn of phrase.

Eeeden · 16/06/2024 10:47

I think you are making offense for yourself.

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 16/06/2024 10:48

It's shitty wording for a shitty article, but a lot of people will ignore that because Kate.

You are not criticising her, or taking anything away from her , or disparaging her, whereas that fucked up wording does from you and millions of other cancer sufferers, but somehow you're in the wrong. Fucking bonkers.

Saschka · 16/06/2024 10:50

Maybethisyearornext · 16/06/2024 10:18

how do I know? Because one of the support groups I am in has several women with children, and they have been in the group saying how their children have reacted - and because my own (adult) children have also seen this and been shocked and contacted me

And she was having a dig at us, she literally called us "lesser mortals"

Edited

Honestly if your adult children have contacted you in distress because some sycophantic arse has written a fawning column about Catherine in the Daily Mail, maybe they should stop reading it? It’s an absolute irrelevance.

And surely the whole point of having a Royal Family is that we are all “lesser mortals”, and the aristocracy are “our betters”? They literally are, legally, above us (and above the law). Which is why I think it should be abolished…

I think you are making offense for yourself.

I have literally just been called a "lesser mortal" in the national press!

Today I have a friend coming to see me. I have spent the last hour planning on going out to get milk so I can offer her a cup of tea. The shop is less then 10 minutes walk away if you are fit. This is a major struggle and a major expedition. I took time to decide whether to try it myself, or ask another friend to bring some round.

However, I am a "lesser mortal" for achieving "less" than Princess Catherine today

Please ignore the people telling you how you should feel. They have no clue about your personal cancer journey and the difficulties you have faced.

The newspaper media are full of shit, take no notice
