If you WFH, what's your Friday afternoon like?

This week has been full on. 12 hour days Monday & Tuesday. Lots to sort Weds & Thursday so am not gonna lie, I'm now lying on my bed periodically tapping the track pad on my laptop while Mumsnetting and holiday shopping. DH is mowing the lawn! Anyone else taking Friday afternoon a bit easy?

Friday tends to be a catch up day after a busy week so morning tends to be actually doing all of the work I couldn’t do Mon-Thur because I’m stuck in meetings all day and then I have an earlier finish at school run time.

DonnaChang · 14/06/2024 16:13

I decline meeting after 1pm on a Friday (unless absolutely critical) and encourage the same for my team.

I block-book my diary to do an admin clear down weekly from 2-4 on a Friday and then, all going well, I log off.

Stressful job, long hours- try to keep Fridays positive.

Kneenightmare · 14/06/2024 16:14

It’s a catch up for me too. I have 121s with my team early on, clear emails and prep for next week. Currently watching tv whilst doing the latter 2!

"I'm now lying on my bed periodically tapping the track pad on my laptop"

Is this to make people in the office think you're working when you're not?

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 14/06/2024 17:02

I finish at 4 on Fridays but actually I ended up working until a moment ago. I’ve been having an email and report reading blitz….

so, productive but fairly chilled.

MartyFunkhouser · 14/06/2024 17:04

I always wfh on a Friday so that my husband and I can go out for lunch. I write off the afternoon. I lead a team and I’m happy for most of them (apart from admin) to do the same.

fieldsofbutterflies · 14/06/2024 17:06

I work for myself and take Fridays as a half day - always done by midday at the absolute latest, today I was done by 11am. Perfect Grin

FLOWER1982 · 14/06/2024 17:07

My company went down to a 34 hour week so I now get Friday afternoons off. Friday mornings however are very quiet! I do work as normal as I’m part time so have to get all my work done when I’m working! Feels like others may be doing what you’re doing!

TheChosenTwo · 14/06/2024 17:07

Pretty chaotic today but had some leave to use and booked the afternoon off!
Usually it’s spent trying to finish up any reports and tidying up loose ends and I will
dedicate the afternoon to longer term projects that aren’t massively time pressured, just for slowly chipping away at.
I try and avoid any meetings being booked on a Friday.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 14/06/2024 17:09

Love Fridays.

I have loads of part time colleagues and lots of people like to take leave on a Friday.

Means I have a lovely peaceful day to think, plan, write and rarely have any meetings.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 14/06/2024 17:10

I do a half day on Fridays. Use the mornings for the odd 1-1 with my team and writing up weekly reports for senior leaders. Log off by 1, it's the perfect balance!

mynameiscalypso · 14/06/2024 17:10

I finish early on a Friday to pick DS up from school. It's quite nice having a hard stop at 3 rather than just faffing for the last few hours of the day. I definitely take it a bit easier on a Friday and try not have too many meetings so I can get some actual work (research/writing) done.

Eminybob · 14/06/2024 17:17

Mine has been a nightmare today.
I have 2 trainees in my team and have stupidly booked their weekly catch ups for a Friday afternoon (makes sense as it's to review the week gone)
Plus, I have to allocate all the work for weekend overtime and Monday, which is carnage as we are horrifically busy and having to prioritise different work streams.

So not at all relaxing. I did finish at 4.15 though so can't complain too much.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 14/06/2024 17:17

I WFH 90% of the time and always in a friday. If I am home alone, I put DVD on my personal computer, which is on the desk next to my laptop, and watch a film while I do all the easy, adminy crap that needs doing but didn't get done in the week.

These thread always go a long way in enforcing the view that businesses have about mandating people back to the office. Where there are pisstakers like OP, there will be genuine people impacted by their behaviour.

CassandraWebb · 14/06/2024 17:22

Are you hoping to persuade employers to force people back to the office?

I've been flat out drafting all afternoon, just got up now to go for a wee because I am bursting but won't be done till 6.

Yes , I am disabled and can't work in an office full time. I wouldn't dream of betraying the trust placed in me because it means so much. Without homeworking I would be on benefits instead

ll09sm · 14/06/2024 17:24

You can be sure that plenty of senior people and business owners read these threads. Encouraging few more mandates about back to office. Well done OP. You’re so smart.

DailyMailHater · 14/06/2024 17:24

WFH from home 2 days a week, office for 3, Friday is always a wfh day but is the same as any other day, meetings where needed, ensuring admin and emails cleared for the weekend and planning for week ahead….my boss called me at 3.15 today to discuss something that took me the rest of the afternoon to sort….it is just a normal day, same as if I was in the office

PurplePolkaDot0 · 14/06/2024 17:25

I did sweet FA this afternoon but I do a timesheet so I’ll have to do a few hours over the weekend now 🤣

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 14/06/2024 17:25

I think taking it easy on a Friday is absolutely fine! You put more work in on other days.

I work for the NHS in the community. Members of our time are burning out with the workload. Every single minute is accounted for. I work very part time. (Thankfully!)

I'm the boss.

I won't be mandating any return to the office.

Far too many benefits with wfh

Pisstakers can and do in every work place whether it's virtual or physical. They need to be effectively managed either way.

Marmite27 · 14/06/2024 17:26

I only work 5h on Fridays, I’m usually done by 12. So I went to the gym and did a food shop before collecting the kids.

I've genuinely never worked in a single job that doesn't have quiet periods and downtime during the working day, whether that's on a Friday afternoon or at another time.

If the work is getting done, why does it matter?

Are you paid for a five day week?
