If you WFH, what's your Friday afternoon like?

This week has been full on. 12 hour days Monday & Tuesday. Lots to sort Weds & Thursday so am not gonna lie, I'm now lying on my bed periodically tapping the track pad on my laptop while Mumsnetting and holiday shopping. DH is mowing the lawn! Anyone else taking Friday afternoon a bit easy?

When do admin get to write an afternoon off then?

I asked this earlier too. Maybe they start later on a Monday or something or get another afternoon off during the week.

Edited to add I’m hoping this is the case because if not it’s a really shitty way to treat employees. DH and I have a company and if we found out any of our managers were allowing certain staff to have a half day on a Friday off and not others we’d be having a very serious conversation with them.

I've genuinely never worked in a single job that doesn't have quiet periods and downtime during the working day, whether that's on a Friday afternoon or at another time.

If the work is getting done, why does it matter?

This.

and why tapping the trackpad? I’ve turned off my green light on teams and email so no one can tell if I’m online or not. Sod that I’m
not 5.

I guess, as usual, this post is for wfh/office workers?

Does anyone on MN do other jobs apart from office work?

I changed jobs a couple of years ago and have more flexibility, but still have to be in the workplace so no wfh. Previously 23 years as a teacher, no we didn't have the Friday ease off, in fact it was worse as students switched off more then.

Commute to work, setup, then teach all day with behaviour management, after school meetings, parents' evenings, take a trolley load of books home to mark in 3 different coloured pens while cooking dinner, seeing to own family, then back to it after their bedtime. So i guess 12 hour days and more, weekends also, plus every day is exhausting dealing with class after class, duties, lunch detentions and meeting so having a wee and eating are a bonus!

Oh yes the holidays do make it worthwhile, that's because term time is so intensive, we do also work, plan and run activities then, whilst looking after our own kids.

When your DP is an emergency service worker, so out as well, extra calls to work, life isn't easy so basically NO, in the real world, we can't just tap on a keyboard to pretend we're working. It does sound a bit whimsical to say a couple of long days, then a couple more sorting it, and a day of timeout is actually quite nice and balanced. Xx

Are you paid for a five day week?

Would you be happy for nurses, teavhees, fire, police etc to write off Friday afternoon? 🤔 Oh admin can't have the same privilege, why not? What an awful comment.

Ourshoddyhouse · 14/06/2024 20:47

It's our busiest time of the week as customers try and get stuff sorted last minute. Managed to log off on time today, but usually end up working an extra half hour or so most weeks.

lndnbrdge91 · 14/06/2024 20:47

You can waste just as much time in an office as at home, the location is irrelevant. If the work is done and deadlines are met is the important thing; not how busy someone is or isn't pretending to be.

CuttingMeOpenthenHealingMeFine · 14/06/2024 18:41

Who cares? They don’t like it they can get different jobs surely? Why do I have to worry about what others are doing?

Exactly and no not everyone can just can different jobs. Honestly it seems all MNs have office jobs and wfh and any inconvenience is to be fainted at. Xx

I always wfh on a Friday so that my husband and I can go out for lunch. I write off the afternoon. I lead a team and I’m happy for most of them (apart from admin) to do the same.

@MartyFunkhouser why not the admin?

Hotnamehere · 14/06/2024 19:37

I think my customers might.

Oh no, I'm sure they wouldn't notice if you just laid back and ignored them? Same as me, I'll just kick back and not teach my students as I'm having a quiet day off. Honestly speaking, sone people have no idea of the real world do they? All they know is sitting behind a keyboard and get sooooo tired after a few meetings 😆

Laura36TTC · 14/06/2024 20:53

Friday is the busiest day in my job role.

I consider it a success if I manage to get logged off on time.

Tuesday is our easy day lol

SocoBateVira · 14/06/2024 20:54

It does sound a bit whimsical to say a couple of long days, then a couple more sorting it, and a day of timeout is actually quite nice and balanced.

It sounds like that to you because you've no understanding or experience of the roles being talked about. Hence the 'real world' comment.

timjinx · 14/06/2024 20:59

Sometimes I get work scheduled for after 6pm on a Friday, which is a necessary pain, but if it's quiet I try to fit in some learning time. I work in IT so even at 60 there is always new stuff to learn.

Must be exhausting all that tapping away on keyboards in between hanging the washing out and having a cheeky nap. 😂

SpikyCoconut · 14/06/2024 21:00

Friday is my late shift. I'm single and childfree (neither really by choice).

I go out with my friend on Thursday night and I get up late on Fridays.

Today I did some exercise, read a book with a coffee in bed then another in the garden watching the birds. Prepared some lunch. Pottered about, showered.
Had a dog walker walk the dog before I has finished things. Started work at 12. Finished at 20:00. In the bath now.

It's not great. But Fridays are quiet and it is what it is. I wouldn't say I worked particularly hard today.

GeneralMusings · 14/06/2024 21:12

I'd love to know how to get into one of these wfh jobs! My current role I literally have to account for every hour so if I stop for an hour it doesn't go down.

I'm clever with 2 degrees and need a change of career...

KarenOH · 14/06/2024 21:14

I had a short day - I did 11-4 because I went swimming this morning and left at 4 to go shopping then out for dinner. I also napped on my lunch break. We have a work based output at work rather than hours.

tartancladpjs · 14/06/2024 21:14

I run a company and we do a 9 day fortnight so everyone takes turns to have Fridays off, we are way more productive even on working Fridays most of us finish about 3pm.

But the rest of the week is so productive it just seems fair to wind down early on Fridays.

Absolutely! Being able to drop kids off at school and pick up, not having to pay for wraparound care because you have to be dressed and ready to leave at 7.30am and then return to pick up from after school club, then work on the computer after work because you've had no time during the day to catch up on e mails. Oh and then the evening meals and housework, weekends to do all the washing, yep! I agree people who wfh do have so many benefits so when we read posts like this and they can just choose to slack it's infuriating! How would they feel if others sectors chose to do this, erm sorry I'm a nurse and want to relax now, I'm arresting someone who has just attacked you, want to relax now, I'm a teacher, cba to teach your kids, want to relax now, I'm a firefighter, cba to pit out your burning kitchen, I want to relax now. 😌

Why not admin? I lead a team and encourage everyone to log off as early as they can on a Friday afternoon but none of them would leave before the last person had finished. We’re a team and they would support each other to get things done, particularly the (presumably) lower paid members. Do all your team know that it’s fine to go for lunch with friends/family on a Friday lunchtime and write the afternoon off (unofficially)?

Sorry I can't serve you with your shopping/coffee. I'm winding down after a busy week. I've had a long lunch and I'm knackered.

Not sure firefighters were quite the example you want there. If ever there were a job where people have periods of very high intensity work and periods where there's much less to do, which is what OP actually describes, it would be firefighters!

Oh no my leg is hanging off. No point going to A & E on a Friday afternoon the medical staff have all knocked off and gone for a kip.

Can I ask why you treat admin staff differently? Just curious.

Oh that's fine, I will simply complain to your boss and you will be sacked! Then I will go home and continue my slacking 😪

Because they're just shit on the bottom of her shoe.

I'm sure she'll be back to tell us how massively appreciated and very well paid they are, though.
