Scared woken up with this rash all over me

I’ve been unwell since Sunday with flu like symptoms - fever, body aches, chills and fatigue. I had hives on Wednesday which seemed to go away with anti histamine. Then this morning I’ve woken up covered apart from my face in this rash as I’ve attached the photo. The skin on my stomach is the worst.
My hands are sore and stiff as well. What the hell is going on? My fever has gone now. I’m going to call the GP surgery as soon as it opens but I’m really scared as I’ve never had anything like this.

The only place not effected is my face.

Have you had Slapped Cheek OP? That gave me a rash with fever and aching joints

sarahc336 · 15/06/2024 22:53

Oh dear op, hope your feeling better soon

Susah · 15/06/2024 23:12

@Polkadotshort where do you think this came from, do you have dc?

Polkadotshort · 15/06/2024 23:14

@Susah Yes I have a 5 year old

Sounds like slapped cheek. I seem to have had it with no noticeable rash. Then my daughter came out with it my.

never been so ill as an adult.

Countrygirlxo · 15/06/2024 23:26

My fingers also swelled I had to take my ring off. The pharmacy told me it probably wasn't slapped cheek when I mentioned I work with kids who had it because my cheeks weren't red but I later found out adults don't usually get the red cheeks.
I was worried sick I thought it was going to be a long term thing and everything I googled said autoimmune disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Wasn't until weeks later I found out joint pain was a symptom of slapped cheek and it all made sense

Polkadotshort · 16/06/2024 06:51

This morning the joint pain and swelling seems worse. Surely this can’t be possible? Do I need to call 111? It’s sooo painful. I’ve taken ibuprofen x 2 but you can only take it max 3 times in a day but I need it more than that for the inflammation.
I hope it only lasts another few days. This is agony 😭 seems to be the worst illness I’ve had as an adult so far with this joint pain.

OP posts:
Polkadotshort · 16/06/2024 06:53

@Countrygirlxo What did you take for the swelling? I’m taking ibuprofen. But you can only have a max of 6 tablets in 24 hours which works out as 3 times.
It’s literally all my joints - my ankles, my knees, my wrists and my hands. All inflamed and swollen. So hideously painful.

Countrygirlxo · 16/06/2024 06:56

I took ibuprofen but it didn't make a difference, just had to ride it out. Ring 111 or visit a pharmacy if you can and see what they advise.
Hope you feel better soon

Haven’t read full thread but I had this over Easter.

It’s Slapped Cheek Syndrome and it absolutely sucks. I had all your symptoms, and was properly poorly. I wasn’t fully better for a couple of weeks.

@Polkadotshort

The last symptom to go was the terrible painful joints. It was hellish. They did go after a few days though.

Almost 3 months on and my enlarged lymph node that came up at the same time has only just subsided.

This joint pain and stiffness is something else! My knees, ankles, hands and wrists are swollen up! I’ve taken ibuprofen- it helps very little to alleviate the pain. The swelling is horrific.

If the ibuprofen is from the chemist, make sure it's the strongest dose. The doctor may be able to issue a shirt script for prescription strength anti inflammatories.

Polkadotshort · 16/06/2024 11:08

@TruthThatsHardAsSteel

whats the strongest dose?

I just wonder why much isn’t said about this and how nasty it can be for adults

Over the counter max dose is 400mg three times daily. It's not a good medication to take regularly for a long period though, it can cause stomach ulcers and damage kidneys. Make sure to take it with/after food.

It's not made a big thing of because it's a self limiting illness/doesn't require treatment, there's not any steps you can really take to reduce your chances of catching it, and the expectation is a full recovery.

Polkadotshort · 15/06/2024 22:12

@goingtohellinahandcart Yes it’s definitely that as my joints are all swollen and stiff. It’s truly awful.
I’m struggling to walk down the stairs.
Can I ask how long the pain/stiffness lasted for her please?

Slapped cheek. Take a multivitamins with iron in it my joints took 3 weeks to feel better

Yeah I know, my GP misdiagnosed it as measles, but I had measles in 1986 so I knew it wasn’t!!

It’s really grim, I hope you feel better soon. (Not as grim as swine flu, I wished for death when I had that!).

I know it's terrible. All I read just said its rare for it to affect adults but that didn't really help!

Mine decided I must have some weird autoimmune reaction and sent me for loads of blood tests. It was only when my child got classic slapped cheek that the penny dropped

Polkadotshort · 17/06/2024 06:54

My hands , wrists , knees and ankles are still swollen and sore. My hands are the worst. I’ve been icing them, taking ibuprofen and paracetamol but the swelling remains. I woke up this morning hoping there might be some improvement, but nothing has changed. It’s been 3 days since the swelling showed up on Friday along with the rash. I guess it could be there until the weekend, I’m hoping and praying there’s an improvement by then.

OP posts:
TheMousePipes · 17/06/2024 07:10

Co-codamol. Get thyself up to the chemist and show them your sore swollen wrists and ask for the strongest co-codamol they can give you over the counter. They may refer you up to the gp for a script for a stronger one but cocodamol was the only thing that touched it for me. I’m now a week since it started and the pain is back down to a low hum without medication - it’s only properly sore still in the night so I’m also utterly knackered.
I hope you feel better soon.

walking101 · 20/06/2024 22:26

@Polkadotshort how are you feeling?

Polkadotshort · 22/06/2024 07:31

@walking101 The joint pain and swelling has eased off now thank god! I’m still easily fatigued but nowhere near as bad
