IT’S NOT A TAX BREAK! Education settings are exempt!

Fed up of Labour calling the VAT on fees a tax break! Ideologically this is so very unsound, we are talking about providing an education here.

Education is not taxed for a reason, in this country it should be a fundamental right.

As a nation vs the global competition we have this is totally a backwards step.

He could put 10p on income tax and raise billions!!! Foolish policy.

Such a misconception about Private School parents. This is an unfair policy.

I employ one person, it just so happens I’ve done this for 20 years. If we are not paying school fees I don’t need to work like this. I could lay off my one employee, I could reduce my hours and make it more of a life style piece taking on the occasional project. If I shut it down or run it in the background I don’t need to do what I do.

Just remortgage and pay the fees upfront OP, most of the schools are offering it.

Edited

I don’t want to remortgage!! That’s dangerous leveraging we are not that well off.

This simply isn’t true. Some schools are now refusing to accept pre-payments. Others have pre-payment plans which already existed but the schools are warning that they will not guarantee it will avoid the VAT (many schemes won’t avoid the VAT because of the way they’re structured). I’d be very wary of a school promoting pre payment schemes as a way of avoiding VAT, and I’ve heard of very few actually doing that.

A business in which you employ people and only run to pay school fees. A business you would close if you had no fees to pay.

Really?

You don't sound as though you'll struggle to pay the Vat on your school fees.

Another company will happily pick up your clients don't worry.

randomchap · 13/06/2024 15:15

So you're threatening to close/reduce your business because you don't want to pay a potential 20% increase in school fees?

What strange priorities you have

HowardTJMoon · 13/06/2024 15:18

Have you considered finding a cheaper private school?

Education should be a fundamental right

It is a fundemental right and it's not changing.

You just aren't getting a vat tax break on luxury education anymore.

I’ll find the money for a luxury education if it means my DC can spell.

"Education is not taxed for a reason, in this country it should be a fundamental right"

It already is. All children can have a state education free of charge.

Newsflash but kids in state schools can spell.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 13/06/2024 15:43

Instead of crying on mumsnet about how your darlings are all going to have to flood the state sector and overcrowd classrooms, how about telling your private schools to reduce their fees? They have gone up 50% in the last 20 years. They could increase class sizes by one or two children, make savings on resources, budget a bit better, all things state schools have been expected to do. Parents saying they scrimp and save to rescue their children from overcrowded and underfunded state schools, well frankly that's the best reason I can think of to have more money and resources put into state schools, that educate the 93%. I am willing to guess the mass exodus to state schools won't happen. Maybe 2% of the 7% will go to state school instead. If the schools want to stay open, then they need to budget better. Isnt that what we're all told?

Willyoujustbequiet · 13/06/2024 15:43

Frasers · 13/06/2024 14:04

You will care though, when the state system becomes even more over burdened. It’s not just teachers they need, it’s facilities, books, everything. And that will take a huge amount of time. In the meantime a percentage of those private kids will move to state. But more than that, am even bigger percentage of kids won’t go to private who would have, that’s what they think is the biggest effort.

so when your kid can’t get their place in a school within several miles. When they are in classes of 40 or more. Yeah everyone will care.

Perhaps you missed the previous threads where some posters crunched the numbers. It came out at less than one pupil per school

It's really not going to have any impact at all on the vast majority.

Correct, it will have no impact whatsoever. Nor will it improve state schools.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 13/06/2024 15:46

It is a fundamental right. It's why we have State Schools. Choosing to not use them is just that, a choice. I couldn't really care less about individuals complaining that they can no longer afford their luxury purchase if VAT is applied.

However, and it's a BIG however.

I absolutely hate that the Labour party have chosen to make this all about divisive politics. They could have said they needed to raise money to pay for all of their Manifesto promises and that this is just one way of doing so. But they chose to specifically say they're taking this money away from (implied) 'rich' people to fund 6,500 state school teachers (and whatever else they're now claiming it will cover) for the 'poor' people. This was a very deliberate, divisive, choice designed to pit people against each other in exactly the same way the Tories have always done. It's a 'don't look at us, look over there at them, it's all their fault' ploy.

Tax receipts in income tax will go down! I won’t need to work if I’m not paying fees by business and I paid over £100k in tax last year alone!

You earned enough to pay £100k in income tax last year yet you only work to pay school fees?

Someone else will do the work you are doing.

HowardTJMoon · 13/06/2024 15:47

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 13/06/2024 15:30

Good idea!

@LaceyLou82 if you're finding money's tight have you considered buying supermarket own-brand products rather than name-brand? Aldi and Lidl are really good for that kind of thing. You could also go through your wardrobe and sell any unwanted items on Vinted. That might help you to balance your books.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 13/06/2024 15:50

Or follow Rishis example and give up Sky TV. Lots of way to save a few bob.

LaceyLou82 · 13/06/2024 16:11

I’ve gone without plenty in my life, we lived in overcrowded conditions, my parents were illiterate, I went to an inner city comp. I was bullied for my race and my clothes.

People think all Private School parents come from privilege. They don’t,

And many primary schools are closing down due to low pupil numbers, orcstruggling to fill places, with the resultant loss of funding.

He keeps saying his wife works in the NHS but not what should be done to fix it.
