Can’t get holiday insurance?

I know I’m BU for posting here. Apologies in advance. Long time poster. NC for this. I have had my laundry ‘darked on’ and know about the Mexican house thief. Hoping you lovely MN lot will help.

Im undergoing investigation for various annoying but not serious symptoms. Ruled out anything too serious.

Still have repeat scan outstanding and a follow up with a consultant. No intervention required. Just might need gallbladder out due to polyps but not urgently.

Heading to France in July before scan and follow up.

DH says they won’t insure me.

Argh. What can I do. I’ve been lucky to never have had health concerns before now so this is all new.

Who won't insure you?
Try Staysure, you will have to declare everything but it should be ok

WingSluts · 13/06/2024 12:04

Has your DH actually checked or is this just his opinion? First step is to call your usual insurer and see what they say, or if not them, another company. There are insurers specialising in people with pre existing conditions that provide tailored cover.

CatonmyKeyboard · 13/06/2024 12:07

Lots of suggestions on a recent thread on this. It'll be possible, but you'll have to phone rather than deal with the online 'computer says no'.

if you are going to France you can get travel insurance very cheaply that covers everything except existing health problems .. they can be covered with the European Health card.

ohtowinthelottery · 13/06/2024 12:59

Having just renewed/changed our annual travel insurance, I wonder how on Earth anyone manages to get cover at a reasonable cost if they declare absolutely everything.
I, thankfully, don't have any specific health conditions, but recently had one of those over 40's health checks. My cholesterol level was slightly over but GP is taking no action (nor did they give me any advice to change anything!). However, one of the insurance questions was "have you ever been told you have raised cholesterol?". As anything over 5 is considered high and mine was over 5, I had to declare it! Goodness knows how much extra they bumped up the premium for that. Ditto, DH who has an age related hearing loss. He's recently had hearing aids from the NHS. All his family have had hearing aids at his age. However, standard practice, according to the audiologist, is to refer to ENT consultant, potentially for a scan, as his hearing is slightly worse in one ear than the other. So that is now classes as awaiting investigation - even though DH has no other symptoms and his hearing loss is much improved due to the aids. More £££ on the insurance premium. We do at least have cover though. Given how many health issues most people have they must either be paying a fortune or not declaring them (the latter could end up being very costly).

A health card doesn't "cover" you for anything. It allows you to get healthcare at the same price as a local would. State healthcare in France isn't free, the government typically funds around 70% of it and the patient pays the rest. If OP needs healthcare for her pre existing issue she could end up paying 30% of the cost herself, which may or may not be affordable.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/06/2024 13:13

Staysure insured us to go to Iceland and the Netherlands whilst we were waiting for the outcome of investigations on DS's heart last year.

Piddypigeon · 13/06/2024 13:18

If you don't have a diagnosis, you won't get cover. You can only get cover once you know what it is.

For France, you can use the Ghic. I went to Europe under similar circumstances when I couldn't get cover (lucky didn't need a doc) but would go elsewhere.

downday24 · 13/06/2024 13:18

Try coop

Change2banon · 13/06/2024 13:19

DH says they won’t insure me.
Who won’t insure you, and why is your insurance based on dh’s say so? Have you done a quote?

Londonrach1 · 13/06/2024 13:24

Sadly it's lack of diagnosis that making it hard to get insurance. My mil had similar for one year and had to stay in the UK for a holiday in the end can you rearrange the holiday. Keep trying different travel companies. Hope you get it sorted x

Rarewaxwing · 13/06/2024 13:24

Avoid Admiral! I started the thread mentioned above. I've been referred to a gynacologist, but when I rang Admiral to let them know (as I'd already taken out a policy with them), they cancelled my insurance.

Luckily, I was able to get insurance by ringing StaySure and going through everything with them on the phone. It cost me £37 for a single trip to Europe.

Mindymomo · 13/06/2024 13:28

You will get insurance but not for anything that should arise relating to gallbladder, so that will be excluded.

sixtyandsomething · 13/06/2024 13:31

it can be very hard to get insurance while undergoing tests.

Sounds like OP is still being investigated. You cannot get cover as there is no formula to calculate the risk and premium. Once you have a diagnosis, most insurers will take you on often with a higher premium. but you won't get cover whilst waiting for investigations. It's just like that.

BloodyAdultDC · 13/06/2024 13:38

I got my DD insure through staysure last week - also pending CT scan (even though the suspected condition won't affect her day to day life AT ALL) - compare websites came back with a straight no.

CrunchySnow · 13/06/2024 13:43

Another vote for Staysure. Their customer service is brilliant, they have always gone the extra mile with my parents.

Piddypigeon · 13/06/2024 13:54

very surprised to see so many votes for staysure. They were one of many who refused us as we had investigations pending.

Inchstonesbeatmilestones · 13/06/2024 13:55

My son has very complex health needs and I find GoodtoGo are great. You list out all medical issues, including any being investigated. If you can find on the list, call them and they'll make sure you're covered.

GuppytheCat · 13/06/2024 14:12

AllClear will cover you but will exclude anything related to the symptoms or conditions currently being investigated.

You then have to decide whether that's ok for your own circumstances.

Source: phoning them for insurance for DH two weeks ago, midway through a set of investigations.

Staysure won’t insure your new condition without a diagnosis. You will be insured for the aforementioned mentioned conditions though.

I think they all do that, and it’s understandable, as an undiagnosed condition could turn out be very expensive!

Cyclebabble · 13/06/2024 14:18

Hi OP. I work in insurance. First point to note is that if you are travelling to France there is still a reciprocal arrangement in place. This is now known as a GHIC and in France would mean that payments for emergency treatment would be very restricted. This of course will not allow you to be repatriated if you fall ill, but the risks are small. Secondly the FCA maintains a list of specialist insurance providers for people with a range of health conditions so I would recommend trying one main player and then using someone from the list. For a few days in Europe (I should not say this), I would use the GHIC and extend household cover so that it covers items away from home (your baggage). The only other element you would get from your travel cover would be cancellation cover but I would take a risk relevant to the cost.

It’s very unusual to cover conditions that haven’t been diagnosed, although they will still cover you for the ones that are. They are covering themselves!

If existing health problems aren’t covered then it’s no good. Most companies cover declared existing health conditions, but not undiagnosed ones, understandably.
