Can’t get holiday insurance?

I know I’m BU for posting here. Apologies in advance. Long time poster. NC for this. I have had my laundry ‘darked on’ and know about the Mexican house thief. Hoping you lovely MN lot will help.

Im undergoing investigation for various annoying but not serious symptoms. Ruled out anything too serious.

Still have repeat scan outstanding and a follow up with a consultant. No intervention required. Just might need gallbladder out due to polyps but not urgently.

Heading to France in July before scan and follow up.

DH says they won’t insure me.

Argh. What can I do. I’ve been lucky to never have had health concerns before now so this is all new.

Sounds like OP is still being investigated. You cannot get cover as there is no formula to calculate the risk and premium. Once you have a diagnosis, most insurers will take you on often with a higher premium. but you won't get cover whilst waiting for investigations. It's just like that.

My comment wasn’t actually regarding the insurance itself, although you can get insurance whilst under investigation, but there will probably be limits on some conditions. What I meant was why is it up to OP’s dh to decide? He is clearly misinforming her .. why is that?

WeeOrcadian · 13/06/2024 15:08

I'm sure you CAN get insurance, it just may be expensive

Unless your DH has actually done some quotes, he cannot know that you can't get insurance

A health card doesn't "cover" you for anything. It allows you to get healthcare at the same price as a local would. State healthcare in France isn't free, the government typically funds around 70% of it and the patient pays the rest. If OP needs healthcare for her pre existing issue she could end up paying 30% of the cost herself, which may or may not be affordable.

After an accident, I was treated in France. At all stages I showed my European Health card but I was still billed some months later for the full cost of the treatment. I wrote a letter explaining that I had shown the card and gave the number of it. I ran the letter through google translate so it was in French. I then got a bill for about 30%, which I think what was what French people have to pay. This was affordable but I was not operated on in France. I had to have the operation when I came home.

My husband has had bowel cancer, I have adult children with ASD. I also have some health issues and I found getting travel insurance really easy on a comparison website.
Once I got travel insurance, I had to add a mental health concern with one of my DC and the cost went up by a couple of pounds. I thought we’d not be able to afford insurance but it really wasn’t too bad at all.

You say you will definitely get insured, and they will, for declared conditions, but the problem is, they won’t cover the undiagnosed conditions!

You won't get cover for the open investigation. The Underwriter has no way of calculating the risk. Everything else should be insurable if you are prepared to pay.

Also, take your GHIC, you may have to pay upfront, but you can reclaim those costs once back in the UK if you keep all the paperwork. For France you will get separate paperwork for doctor, nurses and pharmacie. Takes a while, but you will be reimbursed.

You most certainly can get cover whilst an investigation is underway. Likely not for anything to do with that condition, but for everything else including pre-existing conditions.

I did last week for dd.

Surely the whole point is that OP needs to be covered for everything, but won’t be able to while pending results of investigations leading to a diagnosis?

unsync · 13/06/2024 18:14

@BloodyAdultDC which is what I said, not for the open investigation. RTFP 🙄

DogInATent · 13/06/2024 18:20

I have pre-existing conditions and I'm currently waiting the results of investigations on something else.

I have travel insurance with Staysure and have had for several years. They will cover everything except the two pre-existing conditions and anything relating to the symptoms under investigation. The pre-existing conditions are not related to the new symptoms, but the new investigation rules out cover on everything I have declared. As soon as the investigation is closed they will reassess the premium to account for anything that's found, and the two pre-existing conditions will once again be covered.

Make sure you get your GHIC/EHIC (make sure it's the EHIC if you qualify).
