To allow outdoor wees?

DC are potty trained (pre school and infant age) but there's been a few times we've been out on a country walk/at a park/playground recently and they've had to do a wee at the side of the grass/in a bush as there's no toilets around and they've been desperate.

AIBU to let them do outdoor wees? Or should I get something like a kiddiwhizz? Has anyone used a Kiddiwhizz and would recommend? Or another solution?

We do always do a toilet visit before leaving the house but when it's hot they can drink a lot and sometimes we're out for a couple of hours or more.

I wouldn't give it a second thought. When you've gotta go you gotta go. Especially a child.

alittlehopeisadangerousthing · 11/06/2024 20:08

Personally I think outdoor wees are fine if desperate. I've done it hundreds of times myself as a child in a lay by!

AngryBookworm · 11/06/2024 20:11

YANBU. Councils closing down public toilets in parks and playgrounds should expect this as a natural consequence. In any case it's probably not done anyone any harm in a park or similar.

Nothing wrong with a wild wee.

KarmenPQZ · 11/06/2024 20:13

Dogs do it outside right. My 9 year old daughter won’t anymore and will hold and put herself in pain rather than go outside. My 6 year old son however I do feel we need to think about what age it becomes inappropriate?

Nothing wrong with a wild wee.

Indeed, I'm rather partial to one myself when out on long walks!

Pin0cchio · 11/06/2024 20:15

As long as you are thoughtful about where are doing it etc, life happens!

One of my DC had to pee at the side of a motorway only a couple of days back. There was a huge accident so a 45 min journey had a 2 hour delay. There wasn't a lot we could do about it.

Just make sure if it does happen its well into bushes/undergrowth and not near paths, bins, playground equipment etc that anyone might touch.

ThisNoisyTealLurker · 11/06/2024 20:17

I've let my kids have many many outdoor wees, sometimes it can't be helped. As long as it's discreet it doesn't matter. I distinctly remember being a toddler (or at least very young) and my mum dangling me over a grate in the road to wee! I'd definitely choose somewhere more hidden than that though!!

Heelworkhero · 11/06/2024 20:18

I’m a dog walker and do wild wees most days.

Blarneytalk · 11/06/2024 20:19

It's fine!

KreedKafer · 11/06/2024 20:27

Provided you’re taking them off to a discreet corner or behind a bush, well away from where other people are walking/playing/picnicking, I think it’s fine. If they’re desperate to go and there’s no loo, then needs must!

I live opposite a huge park and while there are loos by the cafes and playgrounds, the park is so enormous that you might easily have a 30 minute walk, even at an adult’s pace to get to them from some parts of the park. I’m sure plenty of parents must take little ones off the path into the wooded areas for an al fresco wee. In fact, I’m sure plenty of adults must occasionally need to sneak off and do the same if they’re really caught short!

Possinass · 11/06/2024 20:28

Agreed it depends on where and how discreet etc.
I was walking down a busy high street a few years ago and a young boy was weeing up a tree while his mum stood next to him on her phone. There was plenty of cafes/pubs/restaurants all down the high street.
But in a park/woods away from people? No one will know so it's fine.

supercalafragilisticexpealidocious · 11/06/2024 20:28

Absolutely fine. We've got a portable potty thing but if it's not to hand and/or they are desperate we always do a wild wee.

PracticeorPractise · 11/06/2024 20:29

There is a tree well known as the 'wee tree' at our local park Grin

TheChosenTwo · 11/06/2024 20:29

My dd had to have a hedge wee the other day on the way home - from the pub, she’s 20!
It’s fine in an emergency, my ds once went in the garden specifically to have a wee 😳 we had a conversation about when and where it’s appropriate…

TheTartfulLodger · 11/06/2024 20:30

Well you're unreasonable for making me Google Kiddiwhizz 🤣

TinyYellow · 11/06/2024 20:30

It’s fine up until about 5, after that I’d only expect them to wild wee in the same situations an adult has to like walking in the highlands.

Heelworkhero · 11/06/2024 20:18

I’m a dog walker and do wild wees most days.

Me too!

mitogoshi · 11/06/2024 20:37

Rural is fine, at parks public toilets should be used if available, if not find somewhere discreet

Lillieloola · 11/06/2024 20:38

Wild Wees are absolutely fine !

DappledThings · 11/06/2024 20:38

Never crossed my mind to worry about wild wees. They're a normal fact of life.

Clearinguptheclutter · 11/06/2024 20:39

Easier for boys-
mine did wild wees all the time when younger. Less often but sometimes these days (they are 9 and 10). Do it discretely.
It’s good for the plants.

no 2s are a no no but in extremis you open clear it up with a dog poo bag or similar

pinkyspromises · 12/06/2024 05:23

Eveyone does it with their kids

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 12/06/2024 05:27

I did it in front of a cyclist on an early morning run once - accidentally! Wild wees are totally reasonable under certain circumstances and conditions. I.e not at the village fete in front of the Tombola

jeaux90 · 12/06/2024 05:29

Ok with kids but we also need to teach them it's an exception.

I think it's foul how some men think it's ok peeing at the side of a road/public place just because they can, it borders on flashing.
