To allow outdoor wees?

DC are potty trained (pre school and infant age) but there's been a few times we've been out on a country walk/at a park/playground recently and they've had to do a wee at the side of the grass/in a bush as there's no toilets around and they've been desperate.

AIBU to let them do outdoor wees? Or should I get something like a kiddiwhizz? Has anyone used a Kiddiwhizz and would recommend? Or another solution?

We do always do a toilet visit before leaving the house but when it's hot they can drink a lot and sometimes we're out for a couple of hours or more.

No. Not unless there’s no one around and they’re in bushes. Other than the side of the grass being grim - people might step on it and human wee smells bloody strong - I’d also not be happy with random people seeing. Too many sickos about for me to let my kids squat like that tbh - I always take them to a cafe etc and pay for something so they can use the toilets

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 12/06/2024 06:43

I think it's foul how some men think it's ok peeing at the side of a road/public place just because they can, it borders on flashing.

There’s an alley near me that’s a useful short cut during the day but which I avoid at night because it seems to be used as a post-pub urinal. Someone wrote IF YOU’RE PEEING HERE, ASK YOUR MUM ABOUT TOILET TRAINING in big black letters on the wall. I don’t know how much it’s helped with the problem but I approved of the effort.

It's fine up to late toddlerhood, as long as it's not in full view of passersby and only done when absolutely necessary.

I'd presume any adults doing it were either drunken men, needed to see a genito-urinary doctor pronto or had some kind of fetish and enjoyed shocking people because nobody who doesn't fit into the middle category there has any reason to.

Same goes for children once they're potty trained.

I did it in front of a cyclist on an early morning run once - accidentally! Wild wees are totally reasonable under certain circumstances and conditions. I.e not at the village fete in front of the Tombola

Definitely a story here Grin

Nope it's fine for anyone depending on circs - country walk you could be 2 or more hrs from the nearest loo -then fine for everyone

20 mins across a park, only the recently potty trained should piddle in the bushes as it could get unpleasant quickly if it became the norm - if they are drinking plenty you head to the loo at half time

Alaimo · 12/06/2024 07:19

I once took a long busride in South America. We stopped for a toilet break in the middle of nowhere. All the indigenous women in their long skirts just squatted next to the road. They must not have been wearing any underwear, and could pee freely without anyone seeing anything. I felt like an idiot having to pull my jeans down to my ankles with everything on full display in order to take a pee.

Anyway, letting a child pee outside is fine. Just please don't leave any toilet paper lying around.

The other category would be pissed people, mainly blokes, on the way home from the pub.

In the middle of the country, miles and hours from anywhere, and with nobody to see you fine.

That's not what the OP is talking about though, but letting her children (6 and 8) go where she feels like it. The fact that her 8 year old doesn't want to anymore is enough in itself.

And women walking their dogs (presumably not halfway up a mountain and hours away from civilization) and pissing where they feel like it is frankly, bizarre.

auscan · 12/06/2024 08:29

Definitely not unreasonable. Especially when you're on a long car trip and have to stop on the side of the road for a bush wee. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/9Le98tXUYEEbMkX2/

Well I thought I made it clear that location and context was everything

OP did mention parks AND county walks

MrsMiddleMother · 12/06/2024 11:29

I think wild wees are absolutely fine but We have a portable potty which is fantastic and highly recommend! But I have no qualms about going over to a bush and getting the potty out and I always give him a bit of privacy by holding up my cardigan or coat to cover him.

Only issue is if you wee whenever you need to wee, you then become pretty lousy at holding them. Learned the hard way, as whenever I'm in the garden I tend to go when needed as a walk back to the house is a faff and a half. Now when I go into town, it's a wee before leaving, and sometimes a wee when I get there. I'm almost ruled by wees! That's old age for you. Little people have small bladders.

itsgettingweird · 12/06/2024 20:04

I'm 43.

And if needs must a wild wee it is!

Nope that was the ages of my kids not OPs. And that my eldest isn’t wanting to not OPs.

i think the only thing me and OP have in common is that we’re being led by the kids on whether or not they want to do a wild wee. And I think that’s ok

Rockmumontherun · 12/06/2024 23:04

I think it depends where you are. I'm a fell runner and spend most of my weekends looking for a suitable tree to wee behind. I get nervous before the start of a race and have to wee about ten times!

AmelieTaylor · 12/06/2024 23:11

KarmenPQZ · 11/06/2024 20:13

Dogs do it outside right. My 9 year old daughter won’t anymore and will hold and put herself in pain rather than go outside. My 6 year old son however I do feel we need to think about what age it becomes inappropriate?

@KarmenPQZ

He's got a way to go...I'm 55 🤣🤣

I think they naturally become more self conscious & it just trails off. Then starts again when they're way past listening to mummy.

@BlamBlamBlam YANBU. Jungle wees are fine. So long as you teach them appropriateness of location (in the hedge - fine, at the bottom of the slide NOT fine). At the play park fine, when there's a toilet near by not fine.

Cornishpasty342 · 12/06/2024 23:14

It’s absolutely fine OP. I am in my thirties but have a bladder issue that unfortunately means when I have to go, I have to go! Have had surgery etc but sadly there’s nothing that can be done when the urge comes. I have had to pee in many bushes over the years, either at the side of the road or out on dog walks. I can do my best not to drink before journeys etc but without fail. I still need to go. It’s like my body hoards liquid for the occasion! I think as long as you’re discreet and respectful that’s ok. Children in particular should absolutely be allowed to pee in a busy if they need to!

Itllfalloff · 13/06/2024 00:02

Fine for the little ones!

Abitorangelooking · 13/06/2024 00:09

I think wild wees are fine. Obviously be discreet and if there is a loo then use it. There was a much used toilet in the local park that you pay 20p for the door to open. Some vandals set fire to the babychange and plastic seat and now it's closed for the forseeable as council don't have the budget.

Closest toilets are now about a mile and a half away at the local supermarket.

stichguru · 20/08/2024 22:24

Wild wees are fine, provided it's public land, you are largely out of view of the main used area, path/road, you're only doing a wee, and you don't use or take home any tissue. If it's kids that are just training then do whatever you need (we all know the stage of "I need a wee" meaning "I'm going to start weeing once I've finished this sentence"!) Obviously if it's an older child or adult, go to a public loo if it's an open area.
