To put a sign on my door telling delivery drivers not to leave parcels?

I keep having deliveries nicked and it's getting to the point I think companies won't believe me!

For context I live on a terraced avenue, quite busy, with an alley way next to my house.

I don't have a front garden. My front door is directly on the public pavement.

So many companies just leave my parcels at the front door and take a photo. And very often they get nicked.

Anyone walking passed just has to reach down for my parcel then turn directly into an enclosed passage so perfect for an opportunistic tea leaf.

I've put it on all my accounts not to do this but they never listen.

Should I make a big bloody sign saying leave with neighbours?

Sorry but this is ridiculous. If OP is at home pretty much all the time then she must hear them knock most times? If not, OP needs to get a doorbell. Preferably a Ring one.

You get an email / text with a delivery window with pretty much any courier company. Then another text as soon as a delivery has been made. So if it is true that OP can't get to the door quick enough then you'd think she'd at least check her phone to see if the parcel has been delivered so she can go out and retrieve it before it's "stolen"...

And no, don't say to leave with neighbours. That's CF in the extreme. You've said you can be hoovering or on the 3rd floor of the house so you're clearly mobile. In which case a neighbour isn't going to be best pleased about being constantly interupted to take in your parcels when you're in your house. Especially when a lot of people WFH these days and don't want the doorbell going with deliveries for other people.

Most delivery companies have drivers who do this, not sure how they think it proves that you have received the parcel. Yes put a note that you will not accept parcels left outside. I also do not choose the locker thing as I'd have to drive to the nearest town for it. DH and I are home almost all the time and still have parcels left outside, no knocking or ringing, and then a message to say it has been signed for.

Get a doorbell!

Mrsdyna · 11/06/2024 14:38

Could you get a ring doorbell so you know when they've been?

Blarneytalk · 11/06/2024 14:53

Just get a parcel delivery box? Sorted.

CJ0374 · 11/06/2024 15:03

I know you said you are renting. Could this be attached to a side wall next to the door with landlord permission?

A ring doorbell will solve all of your parcel woes

Katemax82 · 11/06/2024 20:05

As a royal mail delivery driver I never left parcels outside houses like yours, it's too risky

It was just the first thing I thought to rhyme with Pat, my postman is lovely. It's amazon and couriers that tend to do this. Never RM

I am there!

I don't leave the house very often due to health issues, hence everything I need being delivered.

Sometimes they just knock on the wood (which I hear if I'm in the hall) but not anywhere else in the house. There's a proper knocker there! Which I would hear unless I was hoovering or on the 3rd floor.

But they just keep leaving them without waiting or banging (it does take me a while to answer the door usually)

Maybe get a ring doorbell which alerts you to movement even if someone doesn't ring the bell.

Yes, that's the kind of thing I mean, so useful. Works perfectly for us.

@PostmanTwats so are you going to get a box? 📦

There's a lot of incorrect advice on this thread. OP isn't liable for theft if a retailer's carrier delivers an item to her doorstep without her agreement. It's the retailer's responsibility to properly deliver it to OP; if that means not delivering and coming back another day then that is what they should do to avoid the risk of theft being on them. The law is quite clear on this. Whether various posters (and retailers) agree with it is irrelevant.

The problem though is that some retailers may decline to deliver to your address OP if you report too many stolen parcels, as they may decide it's not worth the hassle. So the advice of having a loud and reliable doorbell and answering the door is sensible from this perspective.

GoneFishingToday · 11/06/2024 23:38

OP I really feel for you on this, as myself and my DH are both disabled, and we have the same thing with delivery companies not bothering to ring the doorbell. Thankfully, we live in a quiet cul-de-sac and haven't had anything nicked. However we did decide to invest in a 'Ring' doorbell, which at first we didn't always hear, but then I found that one of the noises on it was 'dogs barking', and as we don't have a dog, this seemed a good choice, whereas other more everyday sounds can easily get lost if you're listening to music, have the TV on or whatever. If you can afford it, I would plump for this.

You could try a large sign on the door, saying 'Disabled, please knock loudly and give me time to get to the door', although that doesn't always work.

Alternatively, can you go round and have a chat with your neighbour, explain your problem and see if they would be able to help you out?

Another thought is, do you have any family or friends who might be willing to pick up a parcel from a drop off point, at their convenience?

Blarneytalk · 11/06/2024 21:58

@PostmanTwats so are you going to get a box? 📦

No as there's nowhere to put it, my door is on the pavement and I'm not allowed to obstruct the walkway in any way.

I will see about getting a doorbell, but if they don't bother knocking I'm not sure they would take the time to press a doorbell either, but I've read some have motion sensors so go off if someone is there? So that may be helpful .

do you track your deliveries?

Willmafrockfit · 12/06/2024 06:22

if things are stolen can you claim?

GoneFishingToday · 12/06/2024 10:03

Honestly OP, you'd be far better off getting a 'Ring' doorbell, this not only films who is there at the door and what they are doing, but will alert you via your mobile phone, which is why I set mine to make a noise like dogs barking. You can also speak to the person who is at the door if you want to, or set a message that asks them to wait while you get to the door. I know this would be more expensive than a normal doorbell, but it really is worth it, if you can stretch your finances, and easy to set up too. Plus, if your parcel is still just left by the door, and someone takes it, you will have evidence of who took it and how soon after it was put down by the delivery guy. This at least would prove to the sender that you are telling the truth.

Welshmonster · 13/06/2024 09:17

Put a sign up that says to knock loudly and parcels are left at their own risk as you have not taken delivery.

can you put on delivery notes that you may take longer to get to front door

a camera doorbell might be only way with notifications or get cctv on front door with a big sign saying smile you’re on camera

MathsGeek0 · 13/06/2024 14:30

You can get really neat parcel drop boxes. Metal and act like the old bank deposit chutes. Might be worth looking into

Mumof2boys999 · 13/06/2024 16:14

It's the sellers responsibility. State 'do not leave on doorstep' on each order. Email the seller and tell them when stuff is not delivered. They have to replace it or refund

Lokisbiggestfan · 13/06/2024 16:45

You could put a sign up saying don’t leave them but then you would have to go pick them up from the company somewhere.

Reading all of your replies you’re not very keen on any ideas at all. You want it only your way. But if they drop on you step with no knocking they will do the same to the neighbors and it could still it nicked. If you say don’t drop then you will have to go pick up.

So the only real solution is a ring doorbell so they it alerts you of someone there and u go get it right away while watching it. Then if you see someone touch it while walking to get it you can say stop I’m recording you. Otherwise a drop place is the best solution for this.

Yes just buy a doorbell that has an app, then the app will alert you when someone’s at the door. Hopefully the parcel with the doorbell isn’t nicked though….
