Unwarranted shortening of people's names

I work for an agency and people call me by a shortened variation of my name. I feel it's rude to shorten people's names without checking with the person concerned. AIBU?

I'm the other way, I hate my full name and won't respond to it. The only person that calls me it is an auntie. She refuses to call me the shortened version but wants me to call her the shortened version of her name, so I refuse.

So rude!! YANBU. I specifically named my DC very short names which can't really be shortened so they don't have to put up with this

YANBU

My name has 2 possible shortened versions. I only ever go by one of those. The other one I am not keen on. Colleagues still write down the latter one.

I think it's a bit precious tbh. I'll call people what I like thanks

I have a seven letter, four syllable name. It is never shortened.

Two people have tried. MIL, once. A wanky professor at work, once.

I’d say it’s far more precious to think you should choose what someone else is called

And on the flip side I also dislike when people use a shortened name for an actual name.

Why? What's the point of having names at all if we just call people whatever we like?

RedYellowPinkGreenPurpleOrangeBlue · 15/06/2024 13:13

YANBU. I hate this too @Tiredallthetimeneedsleep

My DD has a 2 syllable name, just 2, and yet some people shorten to just the first syllable. So for example, if it was 'Kayleigh,' they say 'Kayles.' Does my head in. Not everyone does it but some do.

Some people do it to me too. Eg, my name is Tracey and people call me 'Trace.' ARGH annoying!

Well go ahead then. Don't call me my proper name. Don't expect me to respond to you though.
