To point out that it’s sliver, not slither

Sliver is a small slice of something.

Slither is what a snake does.

’I had a sliver of cake’, not ‘I had a slither of cake’.

’It’s a sliver of land’, not ‘It’s a slither of land’.

Who are you pointing it out to? I think you need to do it at the time as it would look a bit odd if you randomly brought it up a week later.

Priminister · 10/06/2024 19:59

I saw it on here today. It seems to be a common mistake so I thought I’d be helpful and point it out. :)

That is definitely not a common subsitution. Only a fool would use slither instead of sliver

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/06/2024 20:01

If it was a very, very long swiss roll, could one not have a slither of it?

Or alternatively could one have a thin sliver of snake in a some foreign place where they eat that sort of stuff?

YANBU

I’ll add one of my own.

You can wonder why something has happened, you can’t wander why something has happened. A wander is a leisurely walk.

Rainydayinlondon · 10/06/2024 20:03

I think most people know it’s sliver, but say slither in the same way one says Welsh rabbit instead or rarebit

How very helpful.
I'm sure the person you corrected will feel so much better than you've started a thread about them.

"Welsh rabbit" is acceptable.

ASighMadeOfStone · 10/06/2024 20:08

However, I've found the thread you're referring to and some twat did post only to point out the poster's mistake (which is nasty, and against Talk guidelines) so I've reported them.

Hotnamehere · 10/06/2024 20:09

I hate these snarky threads.

Given that I can’t even remember the thread title, it’s unlikely I’ll be identifying the poster.

But Welsh Rabbit was the original name of the dish.. Rarebit came later...

I’m genuinely not sure they do realise. Someone I know said slither when she meant sliver recently and I commented on it. She said she had always thought it was slither, not sliver. It was only when she googled it that she realised.

Was it really? I’d always thought it was called rarebit. Interesting!

I’m going to hold my hands up and say I actaully have no idea it was silver and not slither! I have now been educated.

niadainud · 10/06/2024 20:58

Given that a lot of people can't tell the difference between "could have" and "could of", or "been and "being", I think you're probably fighting a losing (or more likely "loosing") battle.

I may not have got the slither / silver right but I know all of these and they drive me mad!

You might not remember, but she might.

EatCrow · 10/06/2024 21:03

Slugs slither certainly, especially over soil.

IsItWickedNotToCare · 10/06/2024 21:05

Silver...sliver... now it's getting really confusing...

username47985 · 10/06/2024 21:05

I've got a friend who says 'can you borrow me a tenner' rather than can you lend me. It's infuriating.

AmelieTaylor · 10/06/2024 21:08

I find it FAR more annoying that some people can't post this shite in Pedants Corner.

my best friend is the most amazing person you could hope to meet, but SPaG is dreadful. She won't post on here because of threads like this.
