To point out that it’s sliver, not slither

Priminister · 10/06/2024 19:55

Sliver is a small slice of something.

Slither is what a snake does.

’I had a sliver of cake’, not ‘I had a slither of cake’.

’It’s a sliver of land’, not ‘It’s a slither of land’.

@Priminister I must admit, I wonder if many people on mumsnet actually spent any time in the education system at all!! I have to read many posts twice to understand what people are trying to write!

If it was a very, very long swiss roll, could one not have a slither of it?

Or alternatively could one have a thin sliver of snake in a some foreign place where they eat that sort of stuff?

Well l guess you could have a slither of Colin the Caterpillar.

do you have a bad case of mastitis?? or does this post just get on your tits??? 😆

What an immature and vulgar post. It’s a bit sad if that’s all you’ve got to do with your evening.

A presenter on "Gardening Australia" said "honing in on" instead of "homing in on" on Friday.'s edition. FFS I'm sure the ABC, as cash-strapped as it is, can afford a second take.

Maray1967 · 11/06/2024 00:02

Ozanj · 10/06/2024 19:59

That is definitely not a common subsitution. Only a fool would use slither instead of sliver

Oh dear - I hope MIL isn’t on here - this is a family joke.,

JustJoinedRightNow · 11/06/2024 00:02

I just googled honing in on and apparently it's acceptable. I'm Australian and I've heard this one many times, as opposed to homing in on

So I see, and I take your point that a word entirely unrelated to its actual meaning is now OK.

Fuck me.

AmIbeingTreasonable · 11/06/2024 05:22

That's not quite as bad as people who ask you to be more Pacific!

Can I borrow you some advise? Just keep in mine that, for all intensive purposes, this is a moo point and, at the risk of becoming an escape goat, we're all on tender hooks but I could care less.

😀😀😀

I’m quoting this again because I find it astonishing that someone would refuse to post on MN due to spag threads rather than the rampant racism, ageism, ablism and classist threads which are allowed to run unchecked.

It's not a race to the bottom.

B1anche · 11/06/2024 06:43

I'm with you OP.

Another one I hear a lot is "CHOMPING at the bit", instead of "CHAMPING".

I've got a friend who says 'can you borrow me a tenner' rather than can you lend me. It's infuriating.

That tends to.be more of an area thing ,yesI I no its not grammatically correct but lots of people do it in fact there was a thread a,while ago and somebody had written something like she had a borrowed her friend a fiver and poster after poster felt they had to correct her ,(often getting their own grammar wrong...)

username47985 · 11/06/2024 07:55

@x2boys ahh really. I hadn't realised. I've only ever heard it from that one person. I'm not a grammar corrector, it just sounds so off to me when I hear it.

LoreleiG · 10/06/2024 21:49

Me either! And I am usually a bit of a pedant. So I fully appreciate being told this.

Is this you sarcastically pointing out “me either” as another example, or do you not know it should be “me neither” 🤣

SpringerFall · 11/06/2024 08:41

Priminister · 10/06/2024 19:59

I saw it on here today. It seems to be a common mistake so I thought I’d be helpful and point it out. :)

I really really hope there is someone in your life that points out all your mistakes

CallThatCloudy · 11/06/2024 10:05

I'm so pleased there have been been people in my life that have pointed out all my mistakes. It's made me a better person.

I hate these snarky threads.

Why snarky? What's wrong with defending correct use of language? Unless people want to remain ignorant and look stupid when they use incorrect words

Because this is a parenting chat forum, not an English lesson. I'll correct my students' English at work, because it's my job, and it's what they signed up for.

The poster that this OP is referring to had a post asking for help because of a legal issue she was involved in, and worried about. And the OP's takeaway from that was to start a thread about her English.

Calling it snarky is being too kind.

OneTC · 11/06/2024 10:55

Not in our family. Proud slitherers 😎

It wasn’t about that poster at all. I’d seen the incorrect word used somewhere on MN but it’s a common mistake I’ve seen in various places. If you’re so convinced that I’m targeting a specific poster then why not report the thread?

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 11/06/2024 11:02

Just model correct usage on the relevant thread if you can, OP, that's much better than ostentatiously correcting people.

Although I must admit to having to sit on my hands when there was a recent thread about the usuage and nuance of 'alright' which didn't take my hint.Grin

You said you'd seen the mistake used on a thread the previous day. AS shows ONE poster made that mistake on the day you mentioned. So give over with your "it wasn't that thread".

I did report the other twatty poster who corrected the poor woman on the thread and it was deleted.

Frostypavers · 11/06/2024 11:22

These threads crack me up when a poster comes on to be sarky about someone’s SPAG and makes a howling error in their own post without realising 😂

Seriously though, what’s to be gained by deliberately putting someone down. It’s a shit move.

I said I’d seen it on here. I didn’t mention the specific thread because a) it would be twatty to do that and b) I actually couldn’t remember what thread it was anyway.

So if you or someone else chooses to tell everyone what thread it was and explain exactly how to find it, I think that rather falls under a).
