To change my nose stud for a nose ring

slipmet · 10/06/2024 07:49

Six months ago I got my nose pierced with a needle and had a stud put in - one of those curly type backs. It has healed ok after a few bumps and some swelling to begin with.

Do you think it's too soon to swap out the stud for a nose ring? I'd get my piercer to do it but do not want to book an appointment if it's too soon. Like I said, it seems to have healed/be healing ok, but I don't want to be too impatient and have read mixed opinions on nose piercings. Some saying wait a year and others saying after two months is ok.

Please share your nose piercing stories!

Thanks

I changed mine within 6 months decided i didn't like it and put my stud back in. I'd do it if you want to.

Allmarbleslost · 10/06/2024 07:52

I would make an appointment with your piercer and they will tell you whether it's ok or not. My nose took a full year to heal properly.

IamnotSethRogan · 10/06/2024 07:54

I did it much earlier. I think it was partly because the butterfly fell out and I couldn't find it so I just used the ring I'd bought. I think it will be fine but maybe have a saline solution ready.

Fairysteps11 · 10/06/2024 07:56

I tried changing mine after 4 months. I no longer have it since that day! It was impossible and extremely painful with lots of tears! I tried it at home with the help of dp, your piercer will be able to do this more successfully!

Seedsnnut · 10/06/2024 07:57

It took me about a year to change to a nose ring, I think I was too scared to change it before that since I also had some swelling in the first couple of months.

And just to add - I got it changed from a stud to a ring in a piercing shop and have always done so when I’m changing my nose jewellery.

slipmet · 10/06/2024 08:06

That's what I am worried about - thinking it's safe to change when it's really too early. I'm eager to get a ring!

The piercing shop I use will put the new jewellery in for you when you buy it free of charge. Does yours offer this service?

Why did you have a butterfly back on a nose piercing? Confused

Yes, if I purchase the new jewellery from her. The swap but is free of charge. I just pay for the jewellery. Alternatively, I bring my own jewellery and she does it for £10.

Go for it, my nose ring is my favourite piercing!

fieldsofbutterflies · 10/06/2024 08:08

I've had my nose pierced for over a decade so I can't remember when I changed the jewellery for the first time, but I do remember finding the rings a real PITA as they were forever getting knocked and caught.

I'd speak to your piercer and see what they recommend. They'll probably do it for you for free the first time and show you how to do it as it can be really fiddly.

I feel the same! It just hurt so much when I got it done and I don't want it to go wrong with a jewellery swap! Arghh

I waited about a year. I prefer wearing a stud but I find they always fall out whereas the rings I can largely ignore 99% of the time

Do they use rings that bend when you put them in so you can bend them into place or is it like a sleeper earring that you have to kind of click into the hole? If that makes sense?!

OP posts:
fieldsofbutterflies · 10/06/2024 08:13

@slipmet the ones I had were the sleeper type ones as I just found them less fiddly but I'm pretty sure you can get both.

I wear the twisty stud ones now as I work with dogs and they're less likely to get caught ☺️

MotherofWomen · 10/06/2024 08:15

I’ve had mine pierced for something like 11 years. The healing process was looooong. I’d wait a bit longer, then ask the piercer for help, personally. I still love mine!

urrrgh46 · 10/06/2024 08:16

I change mine regularly, got it done 6 months ago. Had to change it after about 3 weeks as the stud got knocked out of my nose and lost! Never even considered going to the piercer to get it changed! I mostly use the L shaped studs, don't really like the rings on myself but have tried them.

urrrgh46 · 10/06/2024 08:16

I would say that they're not the most comfortable to change though! Not like ears that are painless.

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 10/06/2024 08:27

You can buy nose rings with a hinge, so much easier.
Get it put in by your piercer and if you want to clean the ring it'll be easier to remove and replace.
I also buy studs, I like a blingy jewel, if you ever go down this route buy ones that have clasps around the jewel not just glued on because the oils / heat from your skin degrade the glue and the jewels fall off.
I re-bend the posts to fit my nose.

I was thinking that. So dangerous.

OP I was the other way round, the piercer said the rng is better for cleaning while it heals.

I now by studs in packs of about 50.

Itsallabouttea · 10/06/2024 08:42

I had mine changed after six months but it reacted badly with pain, swelling, weeping etc. Thought it would be ok as the initial piercing had healed really well. Changed it back and waited another six months and then it was fine. It might have helped as well that the ring I currently have is bigger and thinner than the first one

IDoLikeToBeByTheSea · 10/06/2024 08:45

Changed mine after 4 months, sleeper style and was no problem. Just check the gauge used, you don’t want to try pushing through a thicker one! For studs, I use labret backs.

LateDecemberLove · 10/06/2024 08:46

Just ask the piercer as everyone's story will be unique to them so you won't get an answer here.
I think it would be worth it to pay her to do it or buy her jewellery just for peace of mind that it's ready to be changed and that it will be changed properly.
Even if yours is healed you could flare it up by fiddling with it.

slipmet · 10/06/2024 09:00

Thanks all. I'll speak to her and see what jewellery she has and if it's ready and safe to be changed.
