To feel sad and like the friendship is over due to flat earth belief

Friend is a nice person. Comes across sensible, though has had a deepening religious conviction over the last 5-10 years. I’m Christian myself, but I’m talking a bit more fringe. We don’t talk about the fact she probably doesn’t consider me a Christian anymore. I ignore it.
But today I overheard her get really animated and happy in a flat earth discussion. She believes in flat earth. An intelligent woman who’s travelled the world and is from a country in the southern hemisphere. I’d certainly say she is educated and far from stupid.
Aibu in finding this a bit of a final straw moment for being friends? It just felt like something snapped inside that I could t ignore tbh when I heard her. I don’t feel like I want to expose the children, and I don’t feel I can keep the pretence up. It’s just a bit too far, and it feels like it’s gone over the edge.
Aibu, silly to give up on a warm and pleasant person? Or would you be drawing a line?

I knew someone a bit like this. She started talking about how she believed she could communicate with angels. I gave her the benefit of the doubt at first and nodded along politely.

However it got worse and worse. She got sucked into some sort of online cult who were all into this shit. She ‘unfriended’ me in the end as I think she sensed my disapproval.

I should have moved on ages before. YANBU.

You can literally see the curvature of the earth from a boat or a plane

I don't know if you read the Flat Earth Society's FAQs which I posted at 19:03 @TheCryingTheBitchAndTheFloordrobe, but apparently that's because aircraft (and presumably boat) windows are made of funny stuff which just makes it look as if the earth is curved Grin
Like I said, unhinged ...

oh my god thats even worse 🤣 and they think plane and boat manufacturers and pilots are all in on this?

So we either need to go wing walking in the air...or onto the deck of any boat.

OperationSquid · 08/06/2024 20:59

@UprootedSunflower even if it was, what difference does it make in this ? a friend is more better, besides over time you may be able to shape their thinking on the matter

Dying laughing. This is brilliant.

If only there was a part of a boat that was sort of outside and didn't have windows. We could call it, idk, the "deck" or something Grin

I feel your pain, OP. I was dumped by a friend for similar differences in opinion. Friend is anti-vax, anti-abortion, pro Trump. I am vehemently against all these views and she didn't appreciate me saying so.

I got dumped by another friend too, who I later realised was a narcissist. She was also anti-vax and had a number of political views that were the opposite of mine. She kept on telling me there were too many subjects she couldn't talk to me about but kept on taking about them anyway. I was actually quite relieved when she dumped me. It is stressful having such strong differences in opinion if you can't avoid the topic.

A guy I know workwise believes in flat earth, dome over the earth, ice wall at Antartica with undisclosed lands behind. Photos from space are cgi, astronauts are actors working for disney which NASA is part of. Chemtrails are poisoning us with heavy metals. Apparently elites are immune from the poisoning. Oh and Farage is brilliant and will sort the invading army arriving on our beaches. Every possible theory he believes in, he has a deep seated distrust of 'authority'. He uses the furore over the covid lockdowns/vaccines/fraud/ govt deceit/hypocrisy etc as proof that he is right and we are wrong. Weirdly a lovely guy in some ways but spouts some very offensive views at times. Its exhausting and at times very funny. we take the piss

Helengreggregson · 08/06/2024 21:33

I think pick your battles. It’s a stupid belief to me but who cares ? I have friends who have different religious and spiritual beliefs than I do and I hang around with them because they are fun and I enjoy their company. I guess it depends on the person. Are they kind and fun to be around ? These are the things that are more important to me personally

I agree. Value kindness over intelligence especially when it’s a subject like this - it’s not as if she’s got a view on something that is going to cause any harm to anyone

This is what I'd like to know. Why do people think this?

There was an Irish TV present (Aisling O’Loughlin) who not long ago made a video about it. She would have been well travelled too. Her reason seemed to be based on questioning gravity and disbelief in the earth spinning.

As far as I know flat earth wasn't always her belief.

Exactly I beleive what the scientists tell me that earth is round but if they found out tomorrow that actually they were wrong and the earh was indeed flat ( I'm sure there not wrong BTW) what difference would that make to me ?
Why would they lie ?
It makes no sense

I don’t get it either it would make absolutely no difference to anything !! I think it’s more a concept that certain types use to try and highlight that ‘those in control’ will lie and mislead us over such a huge thing whether it would impact us or not.

I know someone like this and I keep her at arms length. I knew she was into conspiracies but I didn’t realise how far down the rabbit hole she was until we had a drunken conversation at a party. She was telling me various far fetched ideas including how she believes the plane trails in the sky is the government poisoning us all. During covid she put wild rants on social media about the government using vaccinations to poison us. She’s not a bad person. I think she has deep seated distrust issues that stem from her bad relationship with her parents. That’s just a guess though.

Geo engineering and they use titanium, sulfar and diamond dust. I don't think it's to poison us but it's used across many countries to counter climate change and not a conspiracy😂 you can look it up. Come on mumsneet get with it! . Geo engineering and cloud seeding are actually being used. Flat earth is bonkers and a conspiracy.

Josette77 · 08/06/2024 21:50

But the Bible literally mentions the earth being suspended in nothing like a sphere?

I would think she'd believe the Bible.

x2boys · 08/06/2024 21:51

I was brought Up as a Catholic and I'm now, agnostic at beat I have no strong religious beliefs but many people around the world do ,its a faith that you can neither prove or disprove the three main religions have some similarities and beleive there is a higher being and an after life none us can prove or disprove this but believing the earth is flat is when we have proof it isn't makes no sense.

Ifyoucouldreadmymindlove · 08/06/2024 22:07

iamreallyabee · 08/06/2024 19:25

There's probably a world where it is flat, and it might even be overlapped with the one where the earth isn't. There has to be consistency though, so when we literally observe it reality collapses into the most popular world, or it's faked.

You fucking what now? 😂

Renamed · 08/06/2024 22:44

Lemsipper · 08/06/2024 18:54

May I ask if you believe in God OP? As you described yourself as a Christian. If so, that seems as equally far fetched as believing the earth is flat? 🤔

As a hard line atheist, I want to say that I don’t think the beliefs are comparable in any way. God is not supposed to be palpable, measurable or provable. The purpose of faith is simply itself - faith.

theeyeofdoe · 08/06/2024 22:49

missmollygreen · 08/06/2024 20:24

You cannot possibly we well travelled, educated and intelligent but believe the earth is flat.

obviously not - you’d have fallen off by now.

Why is it that people who manifest these beliefs and say it is because they distrust authority, will nevertheless go for the most authoritarian dictatorial right wing bullshitters and proclaim them as some kind of saviour? The incoherence makes me feel like I am from another planet. How does a person get to think this way?

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 08/06/2024 18:15

But you believe in something that you can’t prove exists so how are you any better? Keep friendship and avoid religion and earth

Erm… there is plenty of proof that the world is round.

kitteninabasket · 08/06/2024 23:53

It depends. If they keep their views largely to themselves then fine. But if like in my case they go on and on about their beliefs, send you links to ‘evidence’ the Earth is flat and otherwise bait you into a heated discussion about it every other day then no.

BucketBouquet · 08/06/2024 23:56

iamreallyabee · 08/06/2024 18:52

I don't think your friend is stupid as some people have said but I think there isn't enough evidence that the earth is flat

There isn’t any evidence!

Gettingbysomehow · 08/06/2024 23:59

I just couldn't be friends with such a dimwit.

BucketBouquet · 09/06/2024 00:00

Littlepenguintwins · 08/06/2024 19:16

OP may as well say ‘I’m cleverer than my friend and although she’s a good kind person I can’t get over the fact she’s stupid’

She is quite stupid, to be fair.

How popular are you that you will cut someone off because they have a different belief than yours about something so trivial

Surely grown women aren’t worried about being “popular”?
