50k. Life changing? Helpful? Bit extra savings? What would it actually mean to you?

OP posts:
Nonewclothes2024 · 07/06/2024 21:28

Would pay off my mortgage so life changing yes.

JamSandle · 07/06/2024 21:30

It could definitely be life changing.

BouleDeSuif · 07/06/2024 21:35

Life changing.

Ponoka7 · 07/06/2024 21:35

It would mean new teeth, so life changing in that sense. For many it would mean a loss of benefit top ups.

Travis1 · 07/06/2024 21:35

Would pay off almost all our debt freeing up circa £1200 a month which would then let us start doing cosmetic improvements to our house that are needed and life more comfortable all round. So I dunno I suppose that is technically life changing? Not in a woo hoo splash the cash way but in a way that would make me happy.

Would absolutely change my life.

I could put in a wider front door and ramp at the front so I can get out of my house without some precarious and scary (and painful) switches of chair.

I could put a workshop type shed in at the back that I can actually get in and do some of the sculpture and 'big art' I can't do inside the house.

Have you looked into a DFG (disabled facilities grant) if in UK?
I think its up to about 30k, doesn't have to be paid back, but does need to be supported by an OT

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/06/2024 21:40

It would pay off our mortgage so yes!

PleaseBePacific · 07/06/2024 21:40

Life changing 100%

StarDolphins · 07/06/2024 21:42

I could start getting Heinz again, so life changing for me.

Sleepygrumpyandnothappy · 07/06/2024 21:44

Interesting question. Not life chasing at all here, it would be appreciated but it would not doubt go on a mortgage overpayment and I’m not sure how much we’d notice it when we came to remortgage.

If you’d asked me ten years ago it would have been life changing. I’d have moved out for a flat earlier, possibly had DS earlier as a result.

Allthislovelygreen · 07/06/2024 21:46

Life changing if I was 21, now not so much

Choochoo21 · 07/06/2024 22:09

Yes it would absolutely be life changing.

I’m really shocked how many posters have said it wouldn’t be life changing for them.

Whilst I would love to get £50k from a lottery win type situation or a gift, it would go straight into my pension to enable me to retire earlier so not massively life changing.

Like others in the past it would have been but now it would be great.

£50K is not life changing for many people. £250K maybe moreso. Me and DH would retire if we had £250K. Couldn't do it on £50K.

coldcallerbaiter · 07/06/2024 22:12

Not life changing for me. It would go in to savings.

shellyleppard · 07/06/2024 22:12

Ot would be life changing for me..

I would buy my council house. Do it up so it would be warmer then put the rest in savings for old age 😄

blackberryhill · 07/06/2024 22:13

Funnily enough we've recently discovered we're likely to have a sum of a little less than this coming our way in the next 12 months. It'll definitely be very helpful - means we can pay upfront for some works to our house instead of needing finance and bolster our savings - but I wouldn't go as far as to say life-changing.

That's quite a lot of baked beans. Would you bathe in them too, or just have a lot of beans on toast?

Meadowfinch · 07/06/2024 22:16

Literally life changing.

I have 2 years to go on the mortgage. DS has two years in school. The conservatory needs taking down because it's leaking into the utility room.

£50k together with my paltry savings would cover the lot and I could retire now. Never have to work again. 😎 If only........

littlegrebe · 07/06/2024 22:17

We could go on the big holiday we're trying and failing to save up for, and the rest would mean we could afford a really nice flat I saw on Rightmove earlier this week with Victorian ceilings and a gorgeous private garden. We can't afford either of those things at the moment so yes, life changing for us in a small ish way.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 07/06/2024 22:18

I think for our family, £50K would make a huge difference. With 50K we could afford to bridge the gap between student loan and the cost of the cheapest student accommodation for our kids at uni. As it is I genuinely don't know how we'll fund it. I think £5K per year of university per child and I would be able to put 5K towards a new (to me) second hand car as my 15 year old workhorse of a car is about to succumb to rust and I can't afford to replace. So yes, for me, fairly life-changing.

Echobelly · 07/06/2024 22:18

New kitchen, is what I'd say to that (not all of it, but maybe half on one that can last us the rest of our time in this house).

ButteryNuts · 07/06/2024 22:19

Yes it would be life changing

Expo23 · 07/06/2024 22:20

I think it would be life changing. I always say I just want 50k. It would mean I could leave my job and start again in a different career as I could better afford the temporary wage drop.
