50k. Life changing? Helpful? Bit extra savings? What would it actually mean to you?

OP posts:
EC22 · 07/06/2024 20:17

It would pay off all my debts, which would change my life.

DisforDarkChocolate · 07/06/2024 20:17

Definitely life changing, especially if it was a gift not a bequest.

I wouldn't be packing in work or anything but the mortgage would be lower and we'd feel so much more comfortable.

MuggleMe · 07/06/2024 20:20

It might mean we could scrape together enough to get DD1 in the private special needs school the LA don't think she needs, at least for Y10 & 11. So potentially life changing for her.

CoastalCalm · 07/06/2024 20:21

It would ensure I can retire as hoped at 55 after 25 years of serious health issues

FawnFrenchieMum · 07/06/2024 20:22

Yes it would be for us in that it would get us back on the housing ladder. We are struggling to save a deposit with rent and a family but could comfortably afford a mortgage.

maw1681 · 07/06/2024 20:23

For us it would probably mean an amazing holiday that we wouldn't be able to afford normally, and the rest going towards moving to a bigger house now rather than in a few years

Nourishinghandcream · 07/06/2024 20:27

Twenty years ago it would have paid off my mortgage which is never a bad thing.
Nowadays it would of course be welcome but it would not make any major impact on my life. It would pay for some work that is about to be done on the house and would mean the savings we have earmarked to pay for it could remain in the bank.

chillicalypso · 07/06/2024 20:28

That would absolutely change my life. I have just less than 5k in savings… we could holiday! Go abroad!

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 07/06/2024 20:29

I'm trying to get straight so I can retire when I have my hip replaced. This would let me out my name on the waiting list immediately.

Very life changing

MrsWimpy · 07/06/2024 20:32

Not life changing as such but reduce my mortgage to a level that meant I had a very decent lifestyle.
Either that or it would put DC through university.

Springwatch123 · 07/06/2024 20:33

Safety net.

MrsSkylerWhite · 07/06/2024 20:34

Life changing in our circumstances, no.

possibly for other people. Paying off debts and leaving a bit of a cushion, absolutely.

Professionallytorn · 07/06/2024 20:34

£50k would enable me to buy myself a little place. Escaped stbx with just a car load of essentials to live with DD whilst I save furiously. This could potentially put my own roof over my head. Too old for a mortgage. Can't stay here forever, DD set me free, but has her own life to live.

Firawla · 07/06/2024 20:35

No it’s not life changing. I would happily take it though, extra savings and great to have

for someone renting who is struggling to get a house deposit it could be a bigger change, or if that coincidentally happened to be the amount to finish paying off a mortgage and be totally debt free then psychologically that’s a big change too

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 07/06/2024 20:35

50k is way more than a years wages in this house. It would be life changing

holidaypi · 07/06/2024 20:36

Definitely life changing for me

LostittoBostik · 07/06/2024 20:36

It wouldn't utterly change our lives but it would be incredibly helpful and make the next few years much less stressful (nursery costs, cost of living)

mitogoshi · 07/06/2024 20:36

Not life changing but I can quit work younger

LeftLegRightLeg · 07/06/2024 20:38

When I was was young and we were stretched to buy our first house it would have been life changing. Now, it would be a very welcome bonus, but wouldn't fundamentally change anything.

RaininSummer · 07/06/2024 20:39

Life changing to me. I could either retire 2 years early so at 65 or do up my house for sale and get a bungalow.

yogpot · 07/06/2024 20:45

Not life changing as such, but we could get the kitchen and bathroom remodel I want that we ended up not able to afford after we bought our money pit ancient house.

Actually, I take that back. New bathrooms and kitchen (the kitchen is from the seventies) would completely change my life.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 07/06/2024 20:50

It would make me debt free with some to spare so very significant to me.

VWT5 · 07/06/2024 21:00

Not life changing but would fund 8 holidays a year for 5 years…

Needmorelego · 07/06/2024 21:03

Life improving but probably not massively changing....🤔

whatsitcalledwhen · 07/06/2024 21:04

We could afford mortgage payments but can't get one without a chunky deposit so it would be life changing for us definitely.
