Not bothering to separate colours

Trunkybum · 06/06/2024 08:40

I’m just read a reply on another thread where someone mentioned OP should pick similar shades of colour for her child’s clothing so she can wash them all together.
Cant you just wash it all together anyway? I literally bung everything into the machine, including really light stuff and it’s all fine. If I’ve got something dark I’m washing for the first few times lll shove a colour catcher in (yes I’m aware they are the produce of satan). I might keep white stuff separate if it’s really lovely, but white towels are fair game and I hardly have any white clothing.

really who can be arsed with doing so many separate washes? BTW, we’re not talking about high end, delicate garments. Poster was talking about Primark clothes and most of our wardrobe is Next or supermarkets.

I do a white, dark, jeans, towels, bedding and delicate/wool.
I wear a white uniform for work and then school uniform shirts makes plenty for a white load.

MumsTheWordYouKnow · 10/06/2024 19:44

You’re going to think I’m mad. So I do whites, lights, darks, sports, shirts. It works perfectly. I use eco egg on the darks which saves on using the regular stuff and my washes are all of a decent size.

LoobyDoop2 · 10/06/2024 19:52

Whites, lights and darks. White washes usually a mix of clothes and bedding.

Josienpaul · 10/06/2024 18:27

I separate everything, whites, lights, red tones and darks and will add colour catchers in too. Why are they bad?

They can go into filters and people don’t realise and call repair men when machine not working properly. I check my filter, but usually put the colour catcher in a net bag to avoid risk.

Nigellasstickytoffeepudding · 10/06/2024 20:10

I buy nothing white. Problem solved.

RampantIvy · 10/06/2024 20:28

But it isn't a "problem" for me. Our bedding is white and I wear a lot of white, so making up a load isn't a "problem".

Mumtryingtolivethedream · 10/06/2024 20:38

Always separate everything

Whites I wash together at end of the week I hate grey whites so always do them separate
Darks
Colours
Bedding/towels on a 60 wash

Lola2321 · 10/06/2024 20:57

I try to do whites, darks and then a zips n rough wash (jeans, hoodies, super dirty clothes etc), must admit though some whites I just throw in a darks wash if it’s nothing important and needed or nursery clothes

Maneandfeathers · 10/06/2024 21:03

I have whites separate and then absolutely everything else together. Am I doing it wrong? I even put towels in with clothes, should I not be?!

this made me chuckle. Every time oldest DS back from uni DH makes a big effort to get his t-shirts back to white with soaking and washing. I was joking the other day with the amount of vanish he uses could get new t-shirts.

in our house:
Whites
lights (sometimes split into general lights and light blues depending on how much of it we have)
bright colours
Navy blue and dark greens
Black
delicates

we wash towels and sheets separately on 60 degree washes.

i do use colour catchers sometimes but put in a net bag so they don’t go into the filter. Occasionally I forget but we do a maintenance wash once a month and check the filter then.

I'm similar to you, was thinking I was the only one!

I do:
Black / dark
Light blue (mostly uniform)
Light colours
Reds/oranges with colour catcher
Whites
Sheets
Towels

Maybe I'm mad! I didn't know people don't do it this way! I just developed my own system based on what works best.

I also do separate washes for jeans/hoodies with zips/buttons bung them in together, delicates separate, as I find they get holes if put in with trousers/ jeans etc

On a separate note, what washes do you all use? I mostly do 1hour 10min or quick 40 min cycle. My work colleague does everything on 20min wash.

Hello m, my laundry twin!

we do most things on 30 degrees. Usually cotton and it takes 1-1.5 hours. (Or longer if I add extra rinses). Synthetics only wash takes 2.5 hours. DH also uses the mixed load which takes just over an hour but can only be used on loads of up to 4.5kg.

delicates are usually washed on 30 degrees in the wool wash, the delicates wash doesn’t clean well enough for me.

towels and sheets (not together) on 60 (unless sheets are 40 only). If I’m going out or putting on at night, I’ll use the long eco wash 40-60. Takes something like 3 hours!!

DonnaBanana · 11/06/2024 08:04

I do everything on the 20 minute cycle. Doesn’t give it enough time for colours to run and if everything is clean after that time then clearly extra time would be a waste. Doing my bit for the environment as well.

CoastalCalm · 11/06/2024 08:09

Whites / Light grey work tops for DH

Mixed Colours and dark

Indigococo84 · 11/06/2024 08:11

I separate lights, darks, whites. I have enough washing to do a full load of each. The whites is usually one a week or make a full load.

whites will eventually turn grey if you don’t separate them. That is very clear when your kids wear white shirts or t shirts to school, you can see who doesn’t wash their whites separetly!

I don’t wash towels separetly. Never have.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/06/2024 08:18

I wash every item individually and so don't have the problem, (unless, say, socks have coloured stripes but then I do them by hand a stripe at a time).

It does take rather a lot of time, I'll admit, but I scale down the washing powder depending on the size of the item so costs are similar. (I don't use capsules as the kids would probably eat them for Tick-Tock 'likes').

I like to put towels/bedding on a higher wash 60 or 90 boil wash plus I find towels always lose fibres so gets all over the other clothes

Hahaha legend.
if that's the case I'm really surprised you have two left socks with holes

AgileMentor · 11/06/2024 11:31

Never separated washing. Never had a problem.

SoreAndTired1 · 11/06/2024 11:47

I've never, ever, ever, ever separated colours. And I've never, ever, ever, ever had a problem. Never had any colour runs. Ever. I think this 'separate colours from whites' is a line from the washing power/detergent company so they sell more product as people use more because they wash more. With my clothes, I can get everything in the one load; sheets, towel, clothes and underwear. All together, one load only.

Btwmum23 · 11/06/2024 12:12

I used to put all kids uniforms together. They have red PE kits and blue dresses with blue cardigan. End of the year the red PE become purplish… they were really standing out in the pics… I am now doing separate washes for the reds.

SpunkyMintZebra · 11/06/2024 12:14

I used to bung everything together, darks and whites too, but my white baby Muslins were going a lovely grey (not) and it was winding me up so just this week I now do a seperate wash for whites 🤣

No, that isn't true at all.

DappledThings · 06/06/2024 09:06

I separate whites but only since DC started school which gives us enough whites to justify a separate wash. Everything else goes in together. Towels, clothes, bedding, cleaning cloths. Some people have special washes for all those things. Madness.

Ditto, whites separate so that they stay white, everything else in together, willy nilly

Edited

I loathe white so much I dyed my muslins (and the one white babygro I ever owned which was a gift) a lovely emerald green. Gave me another 5 years or so till I needed to separate anything when DC1 started school and had white polos.
