Not bothering to separate colours

Trunkybum · 06/06/2024 08:40

I’m just read a reply on another thread where someone mentioned OP should pick similar shades of colour for her child’s clothing so she can wash them all together.
Cant you just wash it all together anyway? I literally bung everything into the machine, including really light stuff and it’s all fine. If I’ve got something dark I’m washing for the first few times lll shove a colour catcher in (yes I’m aware they are the produce of satan). I might keep white stuff separate if it’s really lovely, but white towels are fair game and I hardly have any white clothing.

really who can be arsed with doing so many separate washes? BTW, we’re not talking about high end, delicate garments. Poster was talking about Primark clothes and most of our wardrobe is Next or supermarkets.

I've never once separated colours.

I also tend to just cook everything at around Gas Mark 7 and it's always fine Blush

uncomfortablydumb53 · 06/06/2024 19:13

I bung everything in together with a colour catcher
I don't have anything white though( it doesn't suit me!)

Oblomov24 · 06/06/2024 19:22

Very occasionally do I separate and that's only if I've got enough for a big white wash. Other than that, everything gets washed together.

WitchyWay · 06/06/2024 19:25

I didn't use to separate them but I got tired of my white stuff turning murky and grey. I also have three children so we have enough white between us for 1-2 loads a week of white a week (bed linen, towels, school tops, my tops, vests etc).

Octavia64 · 06/06/2024 19:30

I am 47.

I have never separated anything in my life.

I do wash new stuff separately in case it runs and if it runs I pretty much don't wear it again.

Not being funny but you separate into about 5 categories surely you'll either be running the machine with three things in it or be waiting weeks for stuff to be washed.

Fudgetheparrot · 06/06/2024 19:30

YANBU, I just bung it all in together. Occasionally I stick DD’s school polos in with knock off Aldi vanish and hang them in the sun if they start to look a bit grey. I don’t really have anything white of my own because it would inevitably end up splattered in something!

My machine has a mixed colours cycle so everything gets whacked on that. Can't be arsed faffing around separating whites😂

When they’re all mixed up, the white items tend to become dull

Rockhopper81 · 06/06/2024 20:23

When there was just my washing to consider, I just separated into whites/light colours and everything else, so 2 loads...but now there are enough people to warrant separate loads, we do whites/darks/light colours/pinks-reds-oranges. Towels are washed separately as we have 'all in one' washing capsules, and I don't like fabric softener on the towels. I wash my period underwear on its own too, and I'll wash the reusable nappies on their own. Bedding on its own just because we have those coverless duvets, so one of those, the fitted sheet and pillowcases makes a load.

It sounds a lot written out, but we sort as it's put in the dirty laundry, and we average a load every day, so no great trial.

I used to be a ‘chuck it all in with a colour catcher’ until an expensive engineer call out to clear a blocked filter. Was advised to bin them unless I wanted to continue contributing to his summer holiday fund 😁

It only takes a few seconds to separate lights and darks, I also use powder for the former and liquid for the latter and it makes a big difference.

I only separate if there's something that might run.

But a blocked filter is easy to clear. Look for a youtube video; don't get an engineer out.

Auburngal · 06/06/2024 20:40

i have a 15 min quick wash function which i use to do a mid week shift of my work uniform.

maw1681 · 06/06/2024 10:05

Yes I separate, you might think it's fine but after a while your whites will be grey!
In fact I just accidentally put a pair of DD's white socks in with a dark wash and they have come out noticeably greyer, if you don't care then fair enough but I prefer to keep my light clothes looking nice.

I'm 64 and have been washing my whites and lights together all my life. I've never had a white garment turn grey, and my whites are whiter than many other people's are. I would never put them in with the dark clothes however, that's just asking for trouble!!

RampantIvy · 06/06/2024 13:09

Those who say they don't have enough whites - do you not have white sheets?

I use white sheets in the summer, so do wash my whites with them, but in my experience no, most people don't have white sheets.

RampantIvy · 06/06/2024 22:32

Not being funny but you separate into about 5 categories surely you'll either be running the machine with three things in it or be waiting weeks for stuff to be washed

I wait until I have a full load.

but in my experience no, most people don't have white sheets.

Maybe it's an age or generation thing? I won't see 60 again and everyone I know has white sheets and light coloured bedding.

Smartiepants79 · 06/06/2024 23:05

Nearly all of my sheets are white or light blue or grey.

Bringonthesunforthewashing · 06/06/2024 23:11

I separate whites/pastels together then colours separately.

dd went to dads and stepmum did a wash and didn’t separate. The wash has one light grey sock in, the other was here. My dp couldn’t believe the difference it made, the socks didn’t look like a pair.

The one at home wash bright light grey, the one she brought home was dull.

I remember because it was the moment dp finally understood why I separated the washing 😂

Itllfalloff · 07/06/2024 10:16

We separate, but with 4 of us there's enough washing for full loads of white, dark, colours.
Colours last better INHO if not washed with darks

afaloren · 07/06/2024 10:35

I have a washing basket with three sections so I separate darks, lights and whites while I’m putting stuff in there. Easy to just grab whichever one’s full and bung in the machine.

I do sometimes dither if I’ve got a tip which is white but with dark bits on it. Tend to put in darks and hope for the best!

afaloren · 07/06/2024 10:35

Oh and I have enough whites because my towels and sheets are white.

susiedaisy1912 · 07/06/2024 10:47

I've always separated whites, darks and colours into 3 different loads. It's what my mum did so I've just followed on from that. I hate the drab grey colour that white socks and knickers go if I put them in a darks load by accident

sarah419 · 10/06/2024 16:12

if you want them to lost longer, regardless of initial quality, you really should be dividing them into shades.

Emmz1510 · 10/06/2024 16:15

I just do a separate wash for whites. If anything has a particularly strong colour and I’m washing it the first few times I’ll do it separately or with really dark things. Ditto for anything with ‘fluff’, like sweatshirts. They get a separate wash the first few times.

Wexone · 10/06/2024 16:17

Sorry everything is separated. have a laundrey basket with 3 drums in it a d people divide it accordingly. I grew up in a house where my mother threw everything in the wash together and hated it. she ruined so many clothes (and didn't care if she did) and still some of her clothes look terrible. clothes cost too much so I wash them accordingly so they will last. I like my whites white not grey or pink

itsallfuntilsomeonelosesaneye · 10/06/2024 16:20

If there is enough time to let the loads build.

Dark colours
Light Colours
Whites
Towels
Bedding (as changed)
Reds (a holdover from when we could do a regular pink/purple/red load due to 3xDD clothing choices)

Will combine as needed.

Mh67 · 10/06/2024 17:24

Never split it. We just do 1 load a day with everything we have worn the day before

Josienpaul · 10/06/2024 18:27

I separate everything, whites, lights, red tones and darks and will add colour catchers in too. Why are they bad?
