To think my way of mopping is the correct way

My way of mopping:
Step1. add desired cleaning solution to mop bucket and then fill mop bucket with hot/boiling water.
Step2. Get mop, and submerge mophead in solution, wring as much as possible and start mopping a small area.
step3. Repeat step 2 until all the floor has been cleaned.

DH's way of mopping:
Step 1. Add desired cleaning solution to mop bucket and then fill mop bucket with hot/boiling water
Step 2. Get mop, and submerge mophead in solution, do not wring mop but instead slosh a small amount of water on the floor.
step 3. Repeat step 2 until every row of tile has its own little pool of water.
step 4. Using the pool of water, mop the respective row of tiles.
step 5. Repeat step 4 until all the floor has been cleaned.

I just feel like the way DH does it means that he ends up cleaning with a cold water which maybe might make the floor have soapy residues and perhaps not clean as well.

Whereas my way means the whole floor is cleaned with very hot water as the mop is being dipped back into a bucket of hot water as you go along.

YANBU: your way is correct/cleans better

YANBU. DH’s way sounds silly.

Dontsparethehorses · 06/06/2024 02:40

I’d let dh mop any way he wanted but it does sound bizarre. I can highly recommend a steam mop if it would help end disagreements!!!

itslunicorns · 06/06/2024 02:55

If the floor is clean at the end, then there isn't a more correct way.
Are you ok OP? Is there something more to this?

Johnhasalongmoustache · 06/06/2024 02:58

Or way 3

get a cleaner

SpringerFall · 06/06/2024 03:43

A floor mopped that I don't have do myself, win win

Why the need to control mopping?

swimsong · 06/06/2024 03:56

You're both doing it wrong. DH less so.

The point of mopping is to get dirt off the floor into the bucket. You're not really doing that - you're mixing the dirt with soapy water and spreading it evenly over the floor. You don't need to start with hot soapy water in the bucket at all, you can pour it hot over the floor from any container (straight from the kettle, then a few squirts of floor cleaner works well). Then you make mud and use the mop to get the mud off the floor and into the bucket.

I was taught how to mop by a school caretaker - and have since watched hundreds of people using your largely futile dip and spread, dip and spread method, glad that he was not there to witness it. "People don't know how to mop", he'd say. And he was right.

CampfireZen · 06/06/2024 04:07

Boris Johnson haplessly attempting to mop a flooded Matlock shop...now THAT was disastrous 'technique' 😆

The YouTube news clip never fails to amuse (sorry, can't link)

WiddlinDiddlin · 06/06/2024 04:08

as per swimsong - get it wet and get the dirt loosened up so it can be lifted off, then lift it off into the bucket. Exactly how you go about it depends on the flooring of course - if its a hospital style floor where the lino is sealed and goes up the walls a bit, slosh away. If its something more sensitive, work in small areas.

I used to mop a hall - not a sealed floor - wet mop, splodge splodge, scrubby scrubby. Rinse and squish mop out, go over the same bit again to lift the dirty water, rinse, repeat on the next patch.

Most people mop incorrectly though, and are simply spreading muck and soap around a bit, not lifting it off.

Fuhjutvb · 06/06/2024 04:43

You do the edges first then work the rest of the floor in a figure of eight motion.

mathanxiety · 06/06/2024 05:48

You need two buckets if you want to do it your way. Otherwise you're dipping a mop full of dirt into your nice soapy water. The second bucket is for a quick rinse between dips in the hot water.

You could also do it your husband's way, but he is losing the benefit of the hot water that way.

Willmafrockfit · 06/06/2024 05:54

boiling water would break the bucket, ime

cuckyplunt · 06/06/2024 06:03

Your DH is mopping the floor, and you are complaining???

Anyway, you are correct. I was taught how to mop properly at The Marmite Factory in the 80s.

k1233 · 06/06/2024 06:08

I've got a double bucket. Clean water one side (small amount that refills) and spins in the dirty side so you have continuous clean water. I've found a puddle of water to be quite a good method. Puddle, mop around to loosen dirt loosen dirt, spin mop, soak up puddle, spin mop, mop in clean water, spin, rinse floor.

I always use floor cleaner and disinfectant in the mop water.

PurpleWhiteGreen123 · 06/06/2024 06:15

I'm not mopping, win.

But yes, your DHs method would infuriate me. He's just moving dirt around.

My ex never used to wring the mop properly and it drove me INSANE.

HooverTheRoof · 06/06/2024 08:29

Does he rinse and wring out the mop whilst doing step 4? Or is he just moving the water around the whole time?

I agree with pp, I'd just be happy that I wasn't mopping

Funnywonder · 06/06/2024 08:37

If DP was mopping the floor, I would have no idea how it was achieved as I'd be too busy sitting with a cup of tea and all the cake. If I'm in the kitchen, he can work around me and I'll avert my eyes.

If, however, he was stupid enough to go rogue and start loading the dishwasher, I'd be there. Watching👀👀

Beamur · 06/06/2024 08:39

It's hard to care either way!
Your way is too dry and you are increasingly cleaning the floor with dirty water as you go along, his is too wet but the water is cleaner. Overall I suspect the floor is cleaner with his method bizarre though it is.
There's a Goldilocks solution out there that neither of you have thought of yet! I don't think the water being hot matters - surely it cools down as soon as it's on the floor anyway!
FWIW I don't mop like either of you. I use a bottle of dilute floor cleaner (cold) and this sort of towelling washable mop. Sweep floor, then spray cleaner on floor and work backwards, swap mop head if it gets grubby for a clean one.
I want to know what the caretakers secret method is...

TheKeatingFive · 06/06/2024 08:41

Surely any way that gets the floor clean is 'correct'?

Rumors1 · 06/06/2024 08:42

OP I do it your way but I add some cold water to the boiling water as I am worried about it damaging the wooden floor.

DH does it the same way but wrings the shit out of the mop before each go. I can hear the spinner going like mad, it sounds like it is going to take off!.

It means there is very little water going on to the floor but he does scrub like a maniac so it comes up clean.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 06/06/2024 08:43

YABU,
The only advantage to using hot water is the floors dry faster. They get just as clean with cooler water. Your DH’s method is as valid as your method. Just leave him to it.

Chely · 06/06/2024 08:43

1-2 spray mop mostly, I've got 4 of the machine washable covers.

Occasionally have a swimming pool of cleaner/water and scrub with a brush to get dirt out of crevices then mop it up.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 06/06/2024 08:48

I use a hard floor cleaner - uses a little water to which you add a cleaner of your choice. Dirty water goes into a separate container. The dirty water is always filthy however clean the floor looked before it was cleaned.

Abitorangelooking · 06/06/2024 08:54

I normally use a spray mop as lazy but for a good clean squirt some cleaner on floor pour a kettle of hot water on floor then using a long handled brush with short but stiff bristle give a good scrub. Then hoover using a wet vac, comes up gleaming.

KreedKafer · 06/06/2024 10:25

Am I the only one who has never given a second's thought to mopping technique? I've no idea how my DP mops. I'm pretty hazy on how I mop.

katmarie · 06/06/2024 10:40

I was taught how to mop in a bakery shop. The method I was taught was hot water, and floor cleaner in the bucket, dunk old fashioned cotton string mop in then splash onto floor to get it soaked, and soften up any stubborn bits. Then give the mop a good squeeze out and use it to soak up all the water, giving the floor a good scrub at the same time. Change water as necessary. When the floor is good and clean switch out for a bucket of really really hot water without any soap, rinse the mop off under the tap too, and do a final rinse of the floor, to get it to dry quickly.

These days I use a spray mop. I don't think it gets as clean as the above method though.
