Desperately thirsty no matter how much I drink

autismmumx · 05/06/2024 17:49

For the past two weeks I’ve been so thirsty no matter how much I drink. All throughout the day I have a drink with me without fail. I’m drinking so much water but my pee is also dark, which seems strange. I’ve stopped drinking caffeine, sticking to water (and sometimes squash and lemonade alongside), as well as sports drinks for the extra electrolytes - I definitely drink more than the recommended daily water intake but nothing is working!!

I’ve also been feeling really tired and easily out of breath.

Of course I went to Google, and it says it could be diabetes - I had gestational diabetes in 2020 and am currently pre-diabetic and overweight so maybe it could be something like that?

Has anyone ever had this before? Any tips on getting rid of this if you’ve experienced it?

It is likely that you're pre diabetic and have leptin resistance. Perhaps if you can't get hold of/awaiting a call back from 111, you could take a pinch of salt, wait a few minutes and then drink some water.
You can also purchase a diabetes and urine testing kit from your nearest pharmacy and test your own readings so you can pass them onto the health professional who calls you back from nhs111.
Lots of risks if you leave it without being treated including coma then death from ketoacidosis.

None of that is going to help if the Op is going into DKA
Honestly I dont think some posters realise how serious it could be
DKA is a life threatening condition if left untreated and needs immediate treatment

I hope the Op has been to A& E and been tested now.

Yes loads of people have had this, they’re called diabetics.

Mamai100 · 06/06/2024 08:38

You really need to get medical assistance ASAP.

It sounds like diabetes especially since you had GD in 2020.

It's really important you see someone, I'd ring 111 like a poster suggested.

I don't want to scare you but DHs aunt died suddenly a couple of years ago aged forty-nine. She had undiagnosed diabetes and fell into a diabetic coma. She was waiting to see a GP but had to wait several weeks and died before that happened.

Why post on Mumsnet for advice when any sensible person would simply make an appointment with their GP to rule out diabetes and check for another reason. Sorry for being direct but no one here knows your medical history or what medication you are on (antihistamines for example cause dry mouth & thirst).

WonderingAboutBabies · 06/06/2024 08:57

Go to A&E. And also take a pregnancy test? Extreme thirst is a symptom.

Good that she did because responses suggest that waiting for a GP appointment could be dangerous. The v dark urine is a more obviously dangerous symptom than the extreme thirst

Caerulea · 06/06/2024 09:13

@CraverSpud because ppl sometimes need reassurance & clarity. No one wants to waste Dr's time so we question ourselves. Sometimes we're just plain fearful of what's wrong with us & sometimes the symptoms mean our thoughts are clouded - as could be the case IF op is in DKA.

All the time it's better than Dr Google & less panic inducing cos real humans are responding & there will always be someone that recognises what's going on & can, at the very least, reassure the enquirer. Ideally those responding will always say 'but truly we don't know & you need to see someone' with kindness.

justasking111 · 06/06/2024 13:33

@autismmumx posted once yesterday afternoon, so guess she's happy with the response

Snackpocket · 06/06/2024 13:36

I had this and thought it was diabetes as it runs in my family. I went to the GP and had a raft of blood tests, turns out it was pernicious anaemia (B12 deficiency) and an under active thyroid not diabetes.

Looolaaa · 06/06/2024 13:57

How are you OP?

Beautiful3 · 06/06/2024 16:47

It's definitely diabetes. Ring you gp for an appointment. Update us all.

You're more rude, than direct, and your advice is completely ill-informed

justasking111 · 12/06/2024 22:54

@autismmumx how are you?

autismmumx · 18/06/2024 16:34

The Diabetes U.K. forum is great for info and reassurance. Be careful you go to the right one as there’s a commercial site that has a similar name and is nothing to do with Diabetes U.K., the official organisation. Here’s the forum:

https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/

And Diabetes U.K. also have information pages and a Careline if needed:

MumApril1990 · 19/06/2024 09:35

Could be diabetes

LovelaceBiggWither · 20/06/2024 03:27

I wonder why nobody else thought of that MumApril1990?

BiffandChip1 · 20/06/2024 06:27

When did you last have your annual diabetes check as you were GDM?

BiffandChip1 · 20/06/2024 06:28

Sorry just seen your update 🤦🏼‍♀️
