Desperately thirsty no matter how much I drink

autismmumx · 05/06/2024 17:49

For the past two weeks I’ve been so thirsty no matter how much I drink. All throughout the day I have a drink with me without fail. I’m drinking so much water but my pee is also dark, which seems strange. I’ve stopped drinking caffeine, sticking to water (and sometimes squash and lemonade alongside), as well as sports drinks for the extra electrolytes - I definitely drink more than the recommended daily water intake but nothing is working!!

I’ve also been feeling really tired and easily out of breath.

Of course I went to Google, and it says it could be diabetes - I had gestational diabetes in 2020 and am currently pre-diabetic and overweight so maybe it could be something like that?

Has anyone ever had this before? Any tips on getting rid of this if you’ve experienced it?

Type 2 diabetes most likely. Get to your GP asap. Best wishes.

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 05/06/2024 18:52

Type 1, OP. Anyone can get it at any age. I developed it at 23 with no family history. This is how mine started. Please go to A&E as you can’t really leave it overnight, it can turn into ketoacidosis at any point.

No. Type 1.

Type 2 tends to be seen in older, overweight people, and it has different symptoms.

The OP said she’s already been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, had gestational diabetes and is overweight so much more likely Type 2.

Hope you manage to get this under control asap OP.

Is there a pharmacy near you that does wellness testing? Might be quicker than a doctor. I’m not sure if this is a thing in the UK - where I live many pharmacies have a small clinic where you can get things like blood sugar and blood pressure tested for a small fee.

Pre diabetes and borderline type 2 would not produce such extreme symptoms. Anyone can develop type 1, overweight or not.

For reference borderline type 2 is a blood sugar of around 7.5. When I was diagnosed mine was 33 and I felt the same as OP. To feel this unwell in a couple of weeks, I would assume type 1 (as a worse case scenario) and act accordingly

Agree. The day before I was admitted I remember googling ‘how much water can you drink before it kills you’. That’s how thirsty I was, it’s very very distinct when your sugars are that high

Me too my sons symptoms came on over the weekend, he was diagnosed in DKA and his blood sugars were so high they were unreadable ,I don't want to worry the Op but it was a terrifying experience

And he was in critical care.

How scary, glad it was picked up in time. Many people don’t realise it’s an emergency and can’t wait 3 days for a GP appointment

cherish123 · 05/06/2024 21:23

Could be Diabetes.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/06/2024 21:24

Could be diabetes or liver or kidney damage.

You need to see a doctor.

Nopet · 05/06/2024 21:27

Speak to GP tomorrow morning. Only drink water overnight. Do you know anyone who is diabetic who could help you do a blood sugar test ?

No do not follow this advice and wait for tomorrow. Go to A&E tonight. My Dad died of DKA last year and I would never want anybody to go through what we went through, it may not be diabetes but honestly don't waste time on this.

If you knew how many women of a certain age carrying a little too much weight are mistakenly diagnosed as type 2……..That and GPs are universally known in the type 1 community for being clueless about type 1. You must get it checked as soon. As possible OP. DKA whatever type you might turn out to be is an emergency and is life threatening. Let us know how you get on.

Dymaxion · 05/06/2024 21:43

I would contact 111, explain your symptoms and see what they suggest. I personally wouldn't leave it until tomorrow.

Saytheyhear · 05/06/2024 21:43

It is likely that you're pre diabetic and have leptin resistance. Perhaps if you can't get hold of/awaiting a call back from 111, you could take a pinch of salt, wait a few minutes and then drink some water.
You can also purchase a diabetes and urine testing kit from your nearest pharmacy and test your own readings so you can pass them onto the health professional who calls you back from nhs111.
Lots of risks if you leave it without being treated including coma then death from ketoacidosis.

Why contact 111? They will just direct to A&E. OP needs bloods taking and urgently, forget trying to get through to 111 just go to hospital!

Bad advice

Only drinking will lead to higher ketones

Op please just take yourself to A&E. Extreme thirst is a very specific symptom, it isn’t something with a thousand causes so it’s not an overreaction

Changeychang · 05/06/2024 22:14

Does your breath smell like Marzipan/Pear Drops?

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 06/06/2024 00:33

Don't drink anymore squash and lemonade - its full of sugar. Not sure the diet ones are great either if you are feeling like this. Also avoid Milk ( has a form of sugar in it) any fruit juice and so on.

The safest thing you can do until you get tested is just stick to water. Green tea is supposed to be helpful in lowering blood sugar levels (no milk), as is exercise, and not eating after 7 pm.

ALongHardWinter · 06/06/2024 00:42

Definitely sounds like diabetes, especially as you say you are overweight.

A GP told me my three year old could not have diabetes ‘because it would have shown up by now and no one else in the family has diabetes’.

Shocking!

My husband sugars read 27 when he went to the doctor. The doc sent him home with a view to do a blood test on the Monday (this was a Friday)!

Luckily the doc must have seen sense and phoned a few hours later and told him to go to hospital. God knows what would’ve happened if he didn’t go to hospital then.

SnowFrogJelly · 06/06/2024 01:08

See your doctor get tested for diabetes

Caerulea · 06/06/2024 01:15

Gah, was hoping to get to the end of the thread to see an update op was going to A&E.

OP - my skinny, lifelong veggie mum was diagnosed with T1 in her 50's. Well - only after she went into DKA & nearly died cos the GP misdiagnosed her with T2 two YEARS prior.

Skip the GP, go direct to A&E. The test is crazy easy. Things go tits up with DKA incredibly quickly so it's better to take the risk of 'well, you're fine, just a bit thirsty 🤷🏼‍♀️' after they've tested you.
