Afternoon Tea - how can anyone eat it all?

I've been looking at things to do next weekend. Looked on Wowcher, Groupon etc. A regular offer is Afternoon Tea for two. Whilst it looks lovely, they regularly feature about 6 sandwich corners each, a few savoury items and FOUR cakes each. I love my food, and I like cake, but there's no way I could eat all of that in one sitting. Can anyone eat four cakes in a row? Are we meant to take a doggy bag?

The food is tiny

purplecorkheart · 05/06/2024 14:46

In my experience the cakes and scones tend to be small and the sandwiches which is my favorite part are tiny. Most of the cakes tend to be quite light too.

Any place I have gone for afternoon tea have given out boxes at the end to take any leftover.

Easily and then ask for seconds

I've never had an afternoon tea that has filled me to the point I can't eat all of it. The portion sizes are not very big, overall I reckon you probably get a full sized sandwich, scone and a full sized bit of cake if you added it all together.

However I'm sure they will give you a box or clingfilm some bits if you wanted to take it home or maybe other people will happily eat it.

LOL

I love an afternoon tea at a posh hotel. They will give you a doggy bag on request, but I have never needed one.

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 05/06/2024 15:04

Afternoon tea is extremely gluttonous.

If I had to have one I'd just have a bite of a sandwich to keep me full until dinner time the next day.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 05/06/2024 15:07

This is mumsnet where everyone is teeny tiny and exists on inhaling the contents of the fridge once a fortnight.
in the real world would see it as a treat and enjoy every mouthful

As a young teen /early 20s I did a comparative survey of many of the tea shops in the south west of England, I concentrated on cream teas rather than afternoon teas but nether the less it was important work.
At that time, the 1980s a cream tea was 2 scones with clotted cream and normally strawberry jam.
Having had cream teas more recently there is normally only one scone.
We have definitely lost sight of what a proper portion should look like.

Starlight1979 · 05/06/2024 15:10

I don't like afternoon tea anyway (usually a rip off for what is essentially one butty, a few little cakes, a brew and / or a flat glass of prosecco). But yes I could easily eat that. Plus get a Maccies on the way home 😀

Not sure what's so shocking about literally one sandwich cut into squares and some cake but guess not everyone is as greedy as me!

I once ate a tray of 12 Krispy Kreme donuts so yeah. I’d manage just fine

Absolutely craving a posh afternoon tea now.

Well, this thread hasn't disappointed so far. If it were a bit later in the day, we could make it a drinking game. Take a drink every time someone mentions too many carbs, the obesity crisis, we've lost sight of what a normal [fill in the blank] is, scoffing, guzzling, etc.

Oh FFS don't mention drinking!!! There was a thread on here not so long ago about mid-week drinking and the outrage that some people enjoy a glass or two of wine on a WEEKNIGHT! People were called alcoholics, "can't you have fun without alcohol?", "irresponsible parents". I was so shook I went and poured myself a glass of Malbec 😂

Luxell934 · 05/06/2024 15:29

🤣🤣🤣🤣
good one

therealcookiemonster · 05/06/2024 15:32

oh yeah, I get full even looking at cake

I definitely don't go for afternoon tea and ask for seconds and thirds (most good places have unlimited refills of food and tea)

AllCatsAreGreyRobert · 05/06/2024 15:34

I’ve had my fair share of afternoon teas and as far as I can remember have finished them.

I wouldn’t skip breakfast or lunch beforehand either, although it’d probably be a light lunch.

I once had a cream tea in Lyme Regis and - shock horror - ate it all! When the waiter cleared away he looked slightly horrified and told me he’d never seen anybody actually finish one before (?) 😁

Also I don’t think I’ve seen the phrase ‘it’s very rich isn’t it, I can’t eat it all’ on this thread yet. My MIL likes using that one.

Sprinklesandsprinkles · 05/06/2024 15:34

I can handle one no problem 🤣 however doggy bags are very normal and respectable.

There's a technique to it though, break up the sweet and savory and you can eat lots more of it rather than scones and all the cakes getting sickly at the end

Makes more sense if the cakes are small! They don't look it in the photo!

So you’ve not actually had an afternoon tea in person your just going off a photo. So you actually do not know if you’d be able to eat it all because you haven't even tried!

Which hotel is serving full size cakes? I want a piece of the action.

AlohaRose · 05/06/2024 15:36

OP, have you ever had a hotel afternoon tea before? The cakes are about two mouthfuls - actually could be demolished in one often except we are all sooo polite when out in company in a chintzy drawing room somewhere! The total of the four or so sandwiches usually offered is the size of one slice of bread. If I go for afternoon tea I don't have lunch before and possibly not dinner afterwards. I really don't see what the issue is?

godmum56 · 05/06/2024 15:36

MasterBeth · 05/06/2024 12:49

Open mouth. Insert sandwich/cake. Close, chew and swallow. Repeat.

HTH

😀
