Afternoon Tea - how can anyone eat it all?

I've been looking at things to do next weekend. Looked on Wowcher, Groupon etc. A regular offer is Afternoon Tea for two. Whilst it looks lovely, they regularly feature about 6 sandwich corners each, a few savoury items and FOUR cakes each. I love my food, and I like cake, but there's no way I could eat all of that in one sitting. Can anyone eat four cakes in a row? Are we meant to take a doggy bag?

OP should have a look for that thread where the greedy husband ate all the baking for the child's party. I think the OP of that thread has had enough of that pig scoffing all the food and hoovering up chocolate brownies so she's probably looking to farm him off on someone else.
You could be an ideal match OP - you can go along to afternoon tea and eat a quarter of a scone and he can demolish the rest.

We've lost sight of normal-sized food portions. And obviously a restaurant is going to want to ensure you don't leave still hungry so will over-feed rather than under. If I was going I'd not eat beforehand and obviously wouldn't need an evening meal later on in the day. Take your Tupperware or let them bag it up if it's too overwhelming to work your way through

Yes, yes,yes - I call mumsnet bingo!

I love afternoon tea and almost always finish what I'm given without a problem. On the rare occasion I've got a little cake left, I bring it home with me. It amazes me that anyone wouldn't usually be able to eat the equivalent of one sandwich, a couple of mini scones, and some tiny cakes. I've been to some venues where you can have unlimited refills of sandwiches and cakes. My daughter took me out a few months ago and we got two extra portions of sandwiches.

StaunchMomma · 05/06/2024 21:32

As PPs have said - the cakes are small.

I think they do a good choice of items so that you there are options if you don't like a sandwich/cake flavour etc.

It's hardly something to worry about.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/06/2024 21:33

I always think it’s too slanted towards sweet rather than savoury - in a standard afternoon tea.

Im sure you can get mainly savoury ones but I mean in general.

Grobblydog · 05/06/2024 21:34

I always do afternoon tea with my husband and we can stuff ourselves appropriately because he’s a savoury boy and I’m a sweetie girl.

Twilight7777 · 05/06/2024 21:34

As others have said the portions are minuscule especially the cakes

Applesonthelawn · 05/06/2024 21:40

I've just googled how many calories there are in an average afternoon tea. Answer 1000 to 1500 calories. At least half the daily requirement of an average woman. So if you are expecting to eat two other full meals, potentially larger than this mere midafternoon snack, yes it's a lot. If it's your main meal of the day and you'll only have one other meal, not so much.

What a depressing mind set.

It's one meal. If you have an afternoon tea a couple times a year it would not result in any weight gain.

OneBadKitty · 05/06/2024 21:46

I never finish afternoon tea- it's so sickly! Ask for a doggy bag!

Notimeforaname · 05/06/2024 21:48

Jesus, the amount of people making fun of others for not being able to physically eat usual or larger portions. Even making fun of someone for being small and dainty. Lots of things like "you only eat that and you are full?? Hahahaha"

If this was being said the other way around can you imagine the responses. 🤣

Notimeforaname · 05/06/2024 21:53

Stuffing yourself to the point of pain and discomfort = good and pats on the back.

Eating a comfortable amount until you're satisfied = weird competitive under eating.

Okeydokey 🤣

SidandAndyssextoy · 05/06/2024 21:54

Don’t have to imagine the responses to people having perfectly normal appetites. The reason so many people are joking about it on here is the relentless criticism of women who like and eat a decent amount of food.

Tuwhituwhoo · 05/06/2024 21:58

This reminds me of girls I knew at school who used to say, “Oh, I could never eat a WHOLE Mars bar!” I did not believe them.

Notimeforaname · 05/06/2024 22:00

Perhaps I'm just not seeing those comments much then? I rarely come across women criticising other women for eating larger amounts on here.

So the criticism here to those who eat less are just jokes?

SidandAndyssextoy · 05/06/2024 22:05

The site is full of it. Thread after thread of people proudly claiming to live on dust and telling people off for eating carbohydrates. People kick back as it’s very annoying.

Or you could, you know, fucking enjoy yourself occasionally. Sure, if you scarf down an afternoon tea every day, you’re going to weigh a bit more quite quickly. Eat healthily the rest of the time but have the odd time when you eat what the hell you like? Go for it. You’ll be doing no harm to yourself.

I eat healthily most of the time. People feel entitled to comment on that Hmm But I can work my way through a buffet like the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Today I had no fewer than 9 sandwiches, two cakes, my own weight in crisps and some fruit. It was great. Zero fucks given.

I've never had a proper afternoon tea - the ones with the tiered plates. They do look a lot so I can understand that in passing you might think it looks too much.

The one in the photo looks like it is for 4 people.
So 1 round of sandwiches - crusts off
2 mini cakes
2 mini savories
1 1/2 scones each

That's quite a large, but not monstrous lunch and I'd say if you arrive hungry and take your time then it would be fine.

4?

Is it buggery, I could eat one of those myself!

somethingwickedlivesnextdoor · 05/06/2024 22:15

We always must of the cakes home! It's crazy. I'd prefer more savoury bits, fewer cakes...

I would genuinely love to be able to do this. Eating out somewhere is always tainted a bit for me because I desperatly want to try so many things but I get painfully full, very quickly. I cant have 2 or 3 courses.
I have moments when I'm like fuck it, I want it and I order more, I end up not being able to enjoy the rest of my night because it hurts so much plus I then feel like shit about the waste of food the waitertook away.

I can eat again in an hour or so, so it's easier at home if we have takeaway as I can go back 2 or 3 times while my partner will just have one massive plate in one go.

I have always been this way, I spent my entire childhood being left at the table alone with orders to "finish my plate" nobody every believed me when I said I was full, I was celebrated the times I forced myself to clear my plate til it hurt which made me feel sick and I couldn't play after.
My parents feel terribly guilty about it all now.

We are just all different and are all built differently. Nobody should be made feel ashamed or stupid or be made fun of because of how they function and like to function.

JLou08 · 05/06/2024 22:25

Yes, I can easily finish it. The cakes are small and every one I have had is 4 sandwich slices which are about a quarter of a sandwich, so basically it's the equivalent to 1 sandwich, 1 cake and 1 scone

Yes this! I'm exactly the same yet get attacked on here for competitive undereating, it's ridiculous and immature.

GellerYeller · 05/06/2024 22:30

@Notimeforaname This resonates with me. It was a teacher with school dinners that liked a stand off with me at primary. I salute the hungry caterpillar lady too. Each to their own, I say. Love me a scone.

GellerYeller · 05/06/2024 22:31

Why isn’t there a scone emoji actually? 😊
