Do you paint your house yourself

Just following on from another thread where I was disappointed in my painting skills! Just wondering if people paint their own houses or pay someone to do it. Tbh if I had the money I would pay someone! They would have to be good though. When I moved into this house someone had done a really terrible job on the painting. The paint on the bannisters was literally peeling off when you touched it as they obvs hadn't prepped - they'd just painted over old peeling paint. It's v expensive to get someone to do it though. Are you any good at painting. I'm better than I was but am not amazing

Have always painted the house myself.

AlltheFs · 05/06/2024 11:26

Mostly ourselves, not the bits we can’t get to eg stairs.
A good decorator is great if you can afford it but we can’t.

I do an ok job of painting but I am lazy with the prep which is the important bit sadly.

DoublePeonies · 05/06/2024 11:27

I won't do stairs - so hall, landing, stairs we get someone in for. And when he was in last time, we added in the kitchen. I've had 2 sets of stairs painted in over 20 years of house ownership, so it's not a frequent occurrence.

But, otherwise we do it ourselves. Including occasional wallpaper.

Conniethecatapillar · 05/06/2024 11:27

I don't have the time with young kids so it has not been painted for a long time. I did paint the bathroom which took me ages and then the kids came and put their hands all over the walls?! I'm not sure it's worth doing until they grow up! Would love a nice clean wall though!

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 05/06/2024 11:28

Yes I do, but I’ve had years of practice! I strongly recommend Joanne Hay Painting and Decorating on Facebook. I’m still learning and she’s fabulous.

Jmaho · 05/06/2024 11:29

I do it myself. No problems with walls but hate doing woodwork and my bannisters and stair rail are in desperate need.
I did pay a decorator to do our hall stairs and landing in previous house. It was very expensive and to be honest I was disappointed with the finish and his clear up attempt. Left us in a real mess.
He came higher recommended by a number of people we knew too so I was a little stung by the experience

Supersimkin2 · 05/06/2024 11:29

Yep, cos once you know how it’s less effort to diy. I really enjoy it.

ComtesseDeSpair · 05/06/2024 11:29

Yes. I hate doing it, and the results obviously aren’t as good as a professional could get it; but every time I need to redecorate I decide that this time I’ll have someone else do it for me, then get a couple of quotes and ultimately decide that I don’t feel the difference between my work and a professional’s work to represent a couple a couple of thousand pounds of improvement to me.

Papyrophile · 05/06/2024 11:33

I used to but the older I have become, the less I like ladders!

aLFIESMA · 05/06/2024 11:34

Decorators are charging upwards of £800 around here for painting out a reasonably sized sitting room so although I'm not so quick and nimble now I'm happy to still get happy with the brushes! Scruffs on, music on and kettle on & get onEaster Grin

Nannyfannybanny · 05/06/2024 11:35

Always done all our own inside and out

rumred · 05/06/2024 11:37

It's all in the preparation. Woodwork must be keyed - sanded to create a surface the new paint will stick to.

I don't mind decorating. I love a paint pad, I find them preferable to brushes and rollers.
Always have done my own but get the outside done by a professional.

BumBumCream · 05/06/2024 11:38

Yep, inside and out. It’s just not worth the cost of paying professionals for us.

IHateWasps · 05/06/2024 11:39

I pay someone. It’s worth it besides it’d be impossible for me to do it due to disabilities but even if those weren’t a factor I’d still pay someone to do it.

ElephantsDontReadFantasy · 05/06/2024 11:39

Yes, I do it all. My favourite cutting in brush has been with me for almost 15 years now.

Waxdrip · 05/06/2024 11:39

I do it myself. Except for one time when we paid a decorator friend of a friend to come in for two mornings. I was impressed by how quick and professional he was and it looked far better than my efforts. But we can't afford to that again, so the only solution is to improve my own skills!

Reallybadidea · 05/06/2024 11:39

I've always done ours and I would say that I'm pretty good at it now. Recently DH insisted that we pay our builder to do it to save time. He did a crap job, I had to sand it all off, prep it and redo it - would have been quicker to do it myself in the first place!

spanieleyes22 · 05/06/2024 11:39

I know it is very expensive I don't really blame the landlord for not getting it done. I would appreciate if she contributed to the cost of the paint and supplies but hey ho she won't and I have to live here so... I wish I could get a more professional finish though!

Always painted my house myself, even my 24 year old dd painted her room.

LittleLlama · 05/06/2024 11:40

I don’t paint the outside of the house myself (risk adverse) and I want a more professional job. Most of the inside we have painted ourself. I quite enjoy it….

DramaAlpaca · 05/06/2024 11:42

In our house, I do walls and DH does ceilings. I enjoy it, him not so much but he can reach better than me.

Caffeineneedednow · 05/06/2024 11:42

Yes it was one of my summer jobs though uni. I learned to paint as a child painting my parents house. My mum was very DIY type person so also did things like tile a bathroom when younger.

In uni as my mum got older and got arthritis I got paid in the summer to paint the house and a few of her friends houses / my aunts house. It was easy money but I am very meticulous.

KreedKafer · 05/06/2024 11:44

Depends. I painted both our spare rooms and made a decent enough job of it, but a professional would have done it better. We paid decorators to do our kitchen and our hall, stairs and landing though as I felt they were more important.

I don’t mind doing walls and ceilings but I hate doing woodwork and radiators.

delphinedupont · 05/06/2024 11:44

Always painted myself, DH preps as I hate rubbing down, I paint because he doesn’t enjoy painting. My sister recently paid £700 for a lounge and media wall painting and I just couldn’t bear to part with that sort of money for something I can do myself.

Trunkybum · 05/06/2024 11:46

I'm alright if I put the effort in, but I get bored with it very quickly so it always ends up as a hash job when you look closely.

I will also never ask friends/family to help, or accept offers of help to decorate in the future. I have several doors with big blobs of dried paint because someone couldn't be arsed to do them properly and bathroom tiles that were very expensive with chips in them as well meaning friends/family claimed they were great at these tasks.
