i took the dc there for something to eat this afternoon.i go about once a week, and never usually have any problems, but today there were 2 members of staff from another part of the store having a drink in there, and they were talking to the cafe staff and gesturing towards the mess my lo's(ages 2.3 and 13months)had made.when i got up and left(having picked up all the mess i could from the floor,as well as putting all the rubbish in the bin, scraping plates and piling them neatly on the tray),there were still quite a few crumbs etc on the floor and table, and the cafe manager and these 2 other women were pointing and shaking their heads at it.(i was standing outside the toilets and they could see me).

wtf am i meant to do?if they provided a dustpan and brush/cloth i would have cleaned it up properly.if they had a problem then why not say something insted of slagging me off behind my back?there are no signs up saying clean up after yourself, and most other people just leave their rubbish and plates all over the table.

gosh. not crumbs in a cafe? not Asda? how shocking!!!!!!

Elasticwoman · 06/04/2008 21:10

When you go to a cafe, part of what you are paying for is some one else to clear up the mess.

Unless you were deliberately causing more mess and damage than was going to happen naturally with dc that age, you have nothing to feel guilty about, and at least the workers didn't slag you off to your face. Just ignore them. They can't help their faces.

Sparkler · 06/04/2008 21:10

I don't think you are being unreasonable at all to feel upset. Sounds to me like like you tried your very best to clean things up before you left. If I were in your situation, and you obviously sound quite hurt, I would write a letter to the store manager explaining the situation and how the staff made you feel. You never know a letter of apology and a voucher could make it's way to you. Well, there's no harm in trying is there.
Chin up!

suzi2 · 06/04/2008 21:11

I think you did enough. YANBU. Write to their head office to complain - it really pisses me off when staff don't think that it's their job to do what their job is!

WingsofanAngel · 06/04/2008 21:11

You should have gone to customer services and complained if you didn't like what they were doing.

suzi2 · 06/04/2008 21:12

oh, ASDA are usually very good at responding to complaints and comments and usually throw a voucher at you

dejags · 06/04/2008 21:12

I would also have been upset/angry if this had happened to me.

FWIW, I would just ignore them though. The cost of your meal includes the cost of dishes being washed the table being wiped/tidied and reset for the next customer.

BetteNoir · 06/04/2008 21:12

If you had cleared up as much as you could, what exactly did they expect you to do?
How rude of them to make you feel uncomfortable.
Phone the restaurant manager tomorrow and complain - they will probably send you some vouchers by way of an apology.

random · 06/04/2008 21:12

I work in a coffee shop ..I agree its part of my job to clean up after people..Wages are crap tho

orangehead · 06/04/2008 21:13

of course you are supposed to have a vacuum cleaner in your mary poppins bag.
Ignore them

suzi2 · 06/04/2008 21:17

You should maybe carry one of these

Divastrop · 06/04/2008 21:20

lol@mary poppins bag

i thought about complaining but i have written a couple of letters to the store manager about another issue recently, and i dont want to be labelled as the mad complaining woman(i used to work in retail and seem to remember that every store had one).

I would write and complain, what do they expect? They work in a cafe so surely part of their job description is to clear up!?!

Elasticwoman · 06/04/2008 21:44

Of course next time, you could say to your dc loudly: "WHAT A GOOD THING WE ARE IN A CAFE WHERE THE STAFF ARE SO HELPFUL AND COURTEOUS!"

Upwind · 07/04/2008 09:57

Are you sure it was your crumbs they were pointing at? It could have been something on the table or wall behind?

IME people often get angry about dirty looks when the dirty looker was actually thinking about something else.

TsarChasm · 07/04/2008 10:09

Isn't the cafe a separately run thing within Asda? I'm probably wrong but I'm sure I heard that somewhere.

princessmel · 07/04/2008 10:13

I complained to Asda once. About having to bf dd in a nappy change room, in chair that had a full nappy bin on either side of it.
I heard nothing.

I'd just forget about it.
It does sound crazy though. Especially since you cleared table etc. Maybe they just like to moan.

mumblesmummy · 07/04/2008 19:19

It's their job to clean up customers mess and to be couteous in the bloody process. I'd have been even messier if someone was whinging about me in that situation.

Asda staff gave me filthy looks and stomped around after I complained that I had found a piece of metal in my beans. I was 5 months visibly pregnant and didn't really want to feed my baby chunks of metal, funnily enough. They gave me a refund and didn't even apologise.

mumblesmummy · 07/04/2008 19:19

*courteous

lilyloo · 07/04/2008 19:24

i would def complain. I recently contacted my local paper to put a letter in regards some service i got in asda. Asda contacted me apologised and sent someone round with a bunch of flowers and an outfit for my dd. Result and my letter still got published in the paper. Think now they part of wal mart they take customer service quite seriously. Have you local paper ?

moondog · 07/04/2008 19:26

Well if you will ingest calories at Asda of all places, what else can you expect?

JeremyVile · 07/04/2008 19:29

Oh Moondog, how utterly predictable.
It's funny I opened this thread and had a little bet with myself that you'd come along and pass a derogatory comment.
And there you are.

moondog · 07/04/2008 19:30

Ah y'see Jeremy I knew you were about and I wanted to please you.
