'Teambuilding' at the weekend

I work 9-5 Monday to Friday and that's all I'm contracted for. Our team has had a few issues (mostly due to a couple of people being very unpleasant and upsetting everyone!) and so the boss has decided to host a teambuilding activity. One of the unpleasant people won't be attending, having made a good excuse in advance, but the other will. The event is on a Sunday and, while it's free for staff, it's an outdoor activity (which I usually like, but this is not my cup of tea) and we will need to provide our own food. The boss doesn't need to pay for this (is just paying for transport as the activity is free) so won't lose money if I don't attend. Would you just suck it up and go or would you respectfully decline? It's very much expected that we will attend.

It's all day and is around 2 hours from where we live.

YABU - of course you should go
YANBU - no way!

Your boss is a deluded fool.

DecoratingDiva · 07/06/2024 07:27

is you boss taking the piss? Team building on a weekend? Hahahaha

if one of the ‘troublesome’ people is not attending it will only cause more issues in the team and it won’t fix any that you have already.

also sounds like your boss is a massive part of the problem if they think this is an acceptable solution to whatever the problem is.

How on earth would I word the email that says noooooooooo

Well, my first thought was 'fuck that shit', but it may not go down amazingly well! 🤣

Do you have any friendly colleagues you can create a little union with and say no?

read your contract carefully. They can’t fire you. If you are sick on the day then they can’t do anything as they aren’t paying you anyway as it’s not a work day. This will create more team drama as the people that are there will resent the people that got out of it. Just say no. It’s a complete sentence

But this isn’t a team building issue. Your manager has two staff he cannot manage effectively enough to stop them making an unpleasant environment for the team, who presumably do a good job.

If anyone needs additional training it is your manager. He needs to learn how to manage disruptive staff and show appreciation for the rest of the team

This was my first thought. Well my second actually, after 'Hell no!' to any sort of team building nonsense.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 07/06/2024 11:29

Absolutely fucking not would I be sacrificing a weekend day for an activity I have to spend 4 hours travelling for and then cover my own refreshments.

Genuinely can't imagine my office ever suggesting something like this. Once someone put the three peaks challenge up as a good one, after much guffawing it was nixed!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 07/06/2024 12:44

I wouldn't go if on a weekend

ShiftySandDune · 07/06/2024 12:54

Just curious for those commenting - presumably it’s also okay to say no to one on a weekday if it requires multiple hours of travel and staying overnight to get there (in your own time, either weekend or evening). Since anything beyond the normal hours is your own time? Even if offered compensation you can argue against it.

Alltheunreadbooks · 07/06/2024 13:14

It's a non working day - why on earth would they expect anyone todo this in their own personal time, unpaid?

Must be a shocking company if this is the level of competence at management level.

If he wants team building that much, he can do it Monday to Friday!
