Preparing for War or Apocalypse

CantBelieveNaive · 02/06/2024 18:30

Am I the only one low level preparing for a disaster?
I'm low level feeling that there is some type of disaster on the horizon, be it a war, mass disease or other occurrence.
Have I watched too many apocalyptic films?
I have lots of tinned food, tin openers, water, disaster plans including lists of written phone numbers. Also plan to collect family members quickly to keep us all safe and good relationships with neighbours so we can survive together if needed.
I feel that we see so many war torn countries, war on women, natural disasters etc etc is it a logical conclusion to prepare for the worst?
Anyone else?
Genuine question.

Nope

PonyPatter44 · 02/06/2024 18:36

If it makes you feel better to do this, then go for it. Building good relationships with your neighbours is never a bad thing, and even if the apocalypse doesn't turn up, who's to say that there might not be a smaller-scale disaster where you'd be glad of good neighbours?

WheelofCheeses · 02/06/2024 18:37

Um….no.

RandomButtons · 02/06/2024 18:38

No amount of prepping will actually help you survive. It will just delay the outcome.

Allfur · 02/06/2024 18:40

Go for it, or you could just live your life and be happy

Graceandfavor · 02/06/2024 18:40

Well my best friend is a JW so she certainly believes the apocalypse is immminent. She prepares by door knocking and prayer?

RedToothBrush · 02/06/2024 18:41

If there was a disaster on this scale, how long do you think you'd have to survive? If it's long enough to need more than one tin opener you need to a hell of a lot more prepping than that.

The issue is that more than a few days and we'd be into law and order breaking down. At that point, do you think it's viable to be travelling to collect family? We'd likely be into army on the streets and curfews, probably will restrictions on movement within small areas (not unlike COVID).

You'd also have to consider your house defensive strategy because if you are going out hunting food, you have a sign saying you have food over you. Which makes you a target.

What use exactly are hand written telephone numbers if the electricity everywhere is out? How do you think telephone masts and more old fashioned telephone exchanges work? By peddle power?

Otherwise prepping for a week probably isn't the worst idea. And you don't need that much stuff to survive that long.

starpatch · 02/06/2024 18:41

I used to be a bit of a pepper. But the pandemic taught me how valuable everyday life is. I want to enjoy it rather than waste if prepping.

MaverickBoon · 02/06/2024 18:42

Really? What's that based on? Surely chances of surviving any kind of natural disaster/breakdown of society or similar would be improved by a really good level of prepping. Isn't that why people do it?

I remember talking to my husband about prepping, late winter 2019...we were reading a US site that was talking about having enough food and medicine in to survive at home if the government quarantined you for three weeks...at the time we though that was a ludicrous notion but then 2020 hit and it didn't seem so crazy to think these things through. If we had more room I would definitely store more tinned food and bottled water, torches and batteries, basic medical supplies etc.

RedToothBrush · 02/06/2024 18:42

FWIW I do have a long thought out zombie apocalypse plan. (genuinely serious)

I made it up for shits and giggles and got a little carried away.

TomatoSandwiches · 02/06/2024 18:43

I mean if it does all go to shit then you'll have the last laugh but try not to let it affect your daily life op.

DixonD · 02/06/2024 18:43

I don’t have time to live my normal life let alone deal with that nonsense as well 😂

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/06/2024 18:45

Op hope you got a bunker under your house.

RoseUnder · 02/06/2024 18:47

YABU.

But I do think democracy is endangered. Democracy isn’t big picture heads of state. It’s small and local, nuts and bolts.

I’m feeling a bit push to do my civic duty, volunteer, lean in and try to improve my community and environment even in small ways. Thing global act local.

I think this will do you more good than prepping, even in terms of mental health but also in terms of actually making a tangible difference to our troubled world. HTH

thebillcollector · 02/06/2024 18:51

Not sure I'd want to survive anyway.

At best you'd lose most of your family and friends, your home, your country.
You may also lose your sanity, some limbs, everyone you know.

You'd be a nervous, lonely, tired, dirty, hungry wreck.

I think a bottle of vodka and a few bottles of whatever pills are all people need in their 'bug out' bag.

whosaidtha · 02/06/2024 18:57

I'm pretty sure that I'd rather be dead. Even if you did survive, Any sort of societal breakdown would take a long time to return to anything resembling normal society.

Giggorata · 02/06/2024 18:58

I wouldn't describe myself as a prepper but DM and DF were the wartime generation and were also used to having a massive garden, chickens, etc, and a well stocked larder, with plenty of tinned, dried and preserved foods.
So I have always done the same.
We live rurally and get snowed in,have power cuts, etc. we have a
large fruit and vegetable garden and a generator.
I have always got loads of first aid stuff and toiletries in the bathroom, in rather pretty jars.
We used to have chickens and goats, but decided against that, as it means we can never go away.
Perhaps I should stock up on dog food…

Adding some large containers of water, things like candles, matches and camping stoves wouldn't be such a big step.
But it doesn't occupy much of my mind, thanks to my upbringing. It just seems normal.

This

I have zero intention of surviving a nuclear fallout or a war won by a psychopath.

Caspianberg · 02/06/2024 19:00

I prep enough for bad weather ( we get snowed in most winters at least a day) , illness, water contamination ( seems common atm in England in areas). But that’s just basically food, water and basic cold medicine to last us 3-5 days without having to venture out. So it’s just stocked regular stores really.
It’s enough that if water was contaminated for example we wouldn’t have to rush to queue for water that day, we could venture the next day. Or if snowed in we wouldn’t have to walk in Thick snow to nearest store for about a week as have enough in.

Not got time to faff with bunkers and zombies or freeze dried malarkey

Truly excellent! I love a good zombie movie

takealettermsjones · 02/06/2024 19:01

Actual apocalypse stuff - I'd rather be taken out quickly.

A few days without power, a home etc - yes I'm prepared.

StormingNorman · 02/06/2024 19:03

That’s not low level. That’s pretty intensive prepping.

lochmaree · 02/06/2024 19:04

Read the future crunch emails, at least it used to be called future crunch I think its something else now. there is so much good going in the world too.

mollyfolk · 02/06/2024 19:06

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 02/06/2024 18:48

Well if it’s nuclear, we have at most 72 minutes before we’ll be (un)lucky to be in remaining few millions;

Well worth a watch/listen:

Isn’t it just awful that we’ve (and I means humans generally) have spent so much time & money on weapons that can destroy us.

no I’m not a prepper. I don’t have the space or the inclination. We couldn’t possibly guess what could go wrong or what you might need.
