Preparing for War or Apocalypse

CantBelieveNaive · 02/06/2024 18:30

Am I the only one low level preparing for a disaster?
I'm low level feeling that there is some type of disaster on the horizon, be it a war, mass disease or other occurrence.
Have I watched too many apocalyptic films?
I have lots of tinned food, tin openers, water, disaster plans including lists of written phone numbers. Also plan to collect family members quickly to keep us all safe and good relationships with neighbours so we can survive together if needed.
I feel that we see so many war torn countries, war on women, natural disasters etc etc is it a logical conclusion to prepare for the worst?
Anyone else?
Genuine question.

I'm a midwife. As long as there are babies being born, I will be needed.

Is that book scary? 📖 if its useful as a planning tool or to help me think ahead would def get it.
Sorry if I'm scaring anyone.
I like being prepared 🤔🆘😘

Scary in parts but gives a realistic insight into survival alone and some of the problems to be overcome.

But her main threats were from rats and seagulls, not other people!

I wouldn't have got through covid without my supplies.

Why would you not have got through covid without your supplies?

I've always got a certain amount of food in the house - stuff in the larder, a small amount of frozen fish - but not because I'm prepping.

Covid didn't see me using up all my larder or frozen stuff. I just continued as usual. The shops were open and tbh I didn't really notice a massive change in availability of things generally.

Obviously loo paper went through a short phase of empty shelves but that was because some people got a bit silly and started buying far more than they needed. But even that I never ran out of.

In the event of an apocalypse I'd hope to be dead. I'm certainly not going to want to prepare to survive one.

This is my view too.
I always have plenty of tins and a full freezer simply because I am used to getting cut off in bad weather and it’s become a habit now.
I have no intention of trying to survive for long simply because I am older and cba 🤷🏼‍♀️
We have a number of springs around here so fresh water won’t be a problem.

Starlight1979 · 03/06/2024 09:41

Nope. I think I'd rather be wiped off the face of the earth (with my loved ones) than have to "survive" on my own with some tins of beans for an extra few weeks!

fliptopbin · 03/06/2024 10:07

You have inspired me to rewatch Shaun of the Dead, and I now have a shovel and a collection of Vinyl on hand so that I can behead zombies when the apocalypse comes. Also, I know a secret way to the pub.

Feelingstrange2 · 03/06/2024 10:10

I remember when I was a on a board of trustees and their policies ran on for pages. Except the crisis one! I questioned to be told there were soooo many possibilities that it had to create a process and plan for who would do what that would work generally which would then be expanded on live for the incident itself.

CactusMactus · 03/06/2024 10:53

What's the point in having telephone numbers written down? Surely you will need your phone (which stores phone numbers) to use them?

BMW6 · 03/06/2024 11:07

No point in having a phone let alone numbers!

😂

ShortColdandGrey · 03/06/2024 11:12

My parents are mormons and they have really ramped up the end of world planning. So, I know where to go if/when we have a national disaster.

MsLuxLisbon · 03/06/2024 11:40

No. Honestly, get help and stop reading sensationalist news articles.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/06/2024 12:51

God no, I’ve far too much else going on plus off to see Abba Voyage for my 60th in August.

What you’re doing cannot possibly be healthy for you.

Yep, this.

I watched a video on Youtube about what would happen if an asteroid hit the earth.
Basically, people hiding out in bunkers etc were just kicking the can down the road. Who wants to live out their final weeks in a dark and dusty wasteland?

OriginalFloorboards · 03/06/2024 23:41

I’d be screwed with water. Three horses and three dogs plus a couple of cats.

Maybe I just stick the cats and dogs on the two horses, ride one and lead the others to the pub.

Can horses become Zombies?

lawnseed · 03/06/2024 23:56

Ha, how many Russian troops have been lost today? 1250 I think I read. The most ever in one day. We always know how badly they're doing when these end of days threads arrive 😂

I'm preparing for the apocalypse by getting lots of stamps in so I can send goodbye cards to my friends and family 🤗

FrogandTrumpet · 03/06/2024 23:59

Tin openers, plural? More than one? A main tin opener and a back-up?

LiterallyOnFire · 04/06/2024 00:00

I used to live in a rural area and got snowed in a few times. Also flooded once. So I'm always fully stocked up with power banks charged and candles handy.

I have considered adding a small portable generator this year, because of the dark mutterings.

However, I think the biggest danger is power outages or cyber attacks, (or both) rather than a full blown apocalypse. So I wouldn't overly panic.

Do audit what you've grown dependent on internet/electricity for, though.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 02/06/2024 18:48

Well if it’s nuclear, we have at most 72 minutes before we’ll be (un)lucky to be in remaining few millions;

Well worth a watch/listen:

That was really interesting. Thank you for sharing

LoreleiG · 04/06/2024 00:09

I am not a prepper or in any way organised. But, I always have candles in case of a black-out because my parents did. And I am considering for the first time stocking up on water because we have had our water cut off three times in the past few years including once at Christmas. And I am alarmed at things like petrol and bugs making it into other water supplies. But that’s it. Though this thread is making me want to stock up on homemade jam and get chickens.

Genuine question.

If you're that anxious, you'd be better off learning survival skills than stashing tins of beans. E.g. how to identify edible plants/fungi, how to make fire, how to collect rain water and make it safe to drink, etc.

If things got really bad, - as in war time - you can't rely on neighbours, and phone numbers / phones might not work.

In short, your prepping sounds like what you'd do if you were worried about being snowed in for a week, not a serious disaster.

aurynne · 03/06/2024 05:39

My way to get ready for society's collapse was to train in a basic skill, so I am an expert at something crucial for other humans to survive. This is the best way to get respect, protection and the basics of life in a society in crisis.

No underground bunker full of manky tins of tomatoes will get close to guaranteeing this.

Edited

Yeah. That's why I went into HR Wink

pizzaHeart · 04/06/2024 00:17

I think it’s sensible to be prepared for :

  • tech glitch so cards not working
  • short power cut
  • being unwell and not being able to go to a shop a few days
something like these^, but not for direct nuclear attack or China/Russia/Iran attacking us from land, sea and air.
pigsDOfly · 05/06/2024 16:47

Been reading a history book about the 1970s and people went on like this then.

I was in my 20s/30s in the 70s and live for a while in Surrey and then moved to London and although there were power cuts from time to time and various problems and the three day week in 74 - which didn't actually affect my working week - I knew no one who was going on about apocalyptic scenarios and stockpiling food.

Okay, I was a single woman living in the capital, so maybe I was more fortunate than some, but for me and my friends life continued pretty much as usual.

I do remember though, not being able to use the lifts at work in case of power cuts and having to walk up and down the stairs to the fifth floor.

FWIW I do have a long thought out zombie apocalypse plan. (genuinely serious)

I made it up for shits and giggles and got a little carried away.

My wife asked me what my zombie apocalypse plan was on our first date.

She married me, so..... I think we can all agree it must've been a good plan.

mollyfolk · 06/06/2024 23:52

I don’t have enough room for hoarding but this tread has inspired me to memorise the most direct route to the nearest pub.
