In so much pain

I'm awaiting extraction on a wisdom tooth and a molar. The molar is badly decayed, I saw the xray and although it looks fine on the outside, the inside just looks black. I'm in so much pain. The pain seems to be inside the tooth and gum but is radiating around the jaw bone and up the side of my face. I've been getting by with strong painkillers and am on day 2 of antibiotics prescribed by the dentist on Thursday.
I'm hoping that the antibiotics will kick in and this will improve. If not I have no idea what to do. The thought of carrying on like this for even a few weeks is terrifying. I have a 5 year old and a toddler and I'm just wiped out from the pain.
Has anyone else had this? Did antibiotics work temporarily? If there's no improvement by the end of the course I feel like I'm just going to pay privately to get them taken out. Can't afford it but can't afford to feel like this for much longer either. Will antibiotics help if the infection is inside the tooth? There's no visible abscess or anything like that.

So sorry for you. Be careful of the constipation pain from pain killers aswell, might want to consider some prune juice, or a dulcolax.

You poor thing! I think today the anti Bs will kick in x

I don't know whether to wait it out or request some others. I can't think straight from tiredness and pain.
I will be ringing the dental hospital and seeing about having it done privately though. Can't cope. But not sure if they'd do it with this infection anyway.

Paramol (in the black packet) is the only thing that touches tooth pain you can get it from over the counter at a pharmacy, that combined with the antibiotics should start to help you (but I did end up paying privately to have my wisdom tooth extracted). I hope you feel better soon.

DancelikeFredAstaire · 03/06/2024 07:44

I feel your pain OP...literally. I wear a partial denture and one of my "anchoring" teeth is crumbling. The pain is beyond anything I've ever experienced (worse than childbirth) and if I was to give it a score it would be a high 9. My face has swollen on one side and any movement just causes more pain in my jaw. I can only take paracetamol and that's not making 1 bit of difference. I'm hoping that my dentist can get me in today and get the bugger out (it's wobbly so a quick tug should do it). I've had no sleep since Friday and have lived off yoghurts. I'm lucky in that I have no DC to take care of so sympathies OP. I hope you get it sorted very soon.

pizzaface23 · 03/06/2024 09:48

I have contacted the dental hospital and said I'm willing to pay privately to have the teeth removed, the surgeon will apparently ring me back later with a quote and hopefully they should be able to get me in this week. But this week could still be Friday or maybe even next week if there are any issues.
There just doesn't seem to be any urgency.
I'm wondering if I should contact my dentist too and ask for a different course of antibiotics but I'm only half way through the current course so maybe they'll want me to finish that first.

Oh OP this is rotten! I would absolutely call your dentist and ask if you should still be in this much pain on day 3 of antibiotics.

Tooth pain is one of worst things to suffer and can be so deliberating .

Really hoping you find some relief soon

NoCoco · 03/06/2024 10:16

I had this years ago and remember having to switch antibiotics for a stronger one. The pain is just another level.
I found solphadine the best alternated with ibuprofen. Nothing hot, try cold drinks, salt water rinses also really helped. Hope you get sorted soon

NoCoco · 03/06/2024 10:17

Also prune juice to avoid the constipation!!

Oblomov24 · 03/06/2024 10:56

I would. I'd ring the dentist again. Then the hospital I'd give it till 2pm then ring again, express the urgency.

Charliebrow · 03/06/2024 16:47

If the tooth that’s causing pain is not the wisdom tooth then there’s no reason why your general dentist can’t access the tooth to drain the infection or remove the tooth and then you can wait pain free for the hospital to remove the wisdom tooth. It will cost you hundreds to have the wisdom tooth surgically removed (perhaps under sedation) on a private basis

Poetnojo · 03/06/2024 17:09

I feel your pain. I had a partially erupted wisdom tooth that had been giving me trouble on and off for a year. I had a cavity in mine though and recently got a bad infection in it. I used antiseptic mouthwash, paracetamol, ibuprofen, codine, ice packs, oragel, clove oil and whisky.
Eventually got a dentist appointment and gave it a quick clean out, a temporary filling and 2 different antibiotics for 5 days. Penicillin and flagyl. Within 3 or 4 days the pain subsided and I had the tooth removed about 6 weeks later which was just last Tuesday.
The relief is indescribable. The recovery from the extraction hasn't been too bad at all. I really hope you get some relief soon but I definitely think you need a stronger antibiotic. Flagyl works on anaerobic bacteria so that would probably be needed since your tooth seems to be whole.

DirtyDensDog · 03/06/2024 18:01

I hope that the anti biotics have started to work for you now.

Toothache is an awful pain, I feel for you.

pizzaface23 · 03/06/2024 19:22

The infection and rot is in the roots which explains the feeling of pain deep inside the tooth and gum.
I am hopefully having both extracted on Friday at a cost of nearly £700. I hope I can last that long without going insane. The dentist prescribed some strong painkillers. The extraction will not be straightforward as both teeth sort of overlap and the roots are weird shapes. They will need to cut them both into bits before being able to remove them. It sounds awful but this pain is horrific too.

OP posts:
pizzaface23 · 03/06/2024 19:25

The extraction is so complicated that an NHS dentist apparently wouldn't touch it. So says my private dentist. I don't give a shit about money anymore I just need them both out. I don't think I'll be getting much sleep again.

OP posts:
Oblomov24 · 03/06/2024 19:41

I understand why they don't want to touch it. Good luck op, stay strong till Friday. Flowers

Poetnojo · 03/06/2024 19:42

Ah that sounds awful. Hopefully the stronger painkillers will help you to get through the next few days.

Snowwhite83 · 03/06/2024 19:51

Hi OP,

Can ur dentist not extract it there under local? Can I ask if you know why they referred to a dental hospital? Was that the only option? I ask as my dentist recently offered to remove a tooth for me but I opted for root canal instead to save the tooth.
Hope you get it sorted soon tooth pain is terrible, you poor soul!

Snowwhite83 · 03/06/2024 19:52

Oops sorry op just seen ur update regarding no nhs dentisting agreeing to remove. Really hope you feel better soon.

pizzaface23 · 03/06/2024 19:58

I'm just in tears. I feel so pathetic but it truly is the worse pain and there's no escaping it. Friday seems so far away.

CountingCrones · 03/06/2024 20:00

I’m surprised they gave you such mild antibiotics! With my molar it was the really strong ones and although it took 5 days to properly kick in, it was a little better each day.

I’m glad you got advice for an ice pack, not heat. Heat is the worst thing for it - it’s already incredibly inflamed.

In very much a Not A Doctor advice, haven’t you got any stronger painkillers kicking around somewhere? I was on DH’s back injury codeine.

You're not pathetic at all! It is the worst .

I hope you find some relief before Friday

pizzaface23 · 03/06/2024 20:08

I've had paracetamol, codeine, ibuprofen and now some prescribed one (dihydrocodeine or something) and nothing is touching it now. I've tried ice packs, clove oil, anbesol gel. It's just constant.

JenniferGreenHat · 03/06/2024 20:26

You have huge sympathy from me OP, wisdom tooth pain is horrendous. It sounds like you’re doing everything you can, and you will get to Friday.

I’ve had all my wisdom teeth removed, they all caused issues. I had my last one removed less than 2 weeks ago - it was complicated to remove. Due to root shape, it had to be cut up to be taken out. It was totally fine. It didn’t take long, and I had no pain whilst it was done. It was numb due to injections, but I was awake. I am terrified of the dentist, I read so many threads on here before I went, and I want to stress that the procedure really was fine.

I have had issues since, the clot partially moved, so I have had slight dry socket. It’s been very painful, but it’s now healing nicely and I am relieved it’s gone.

I hope you get yours sorted soon, best wishes OP.

pizzaface23 · 03/06/2024 20:44

All I keep visualising is rotten, mangled roots lodged in my gums. I'm struggling to eat now, it's getting worse by the day not better as you'd expect if the antibiotics were working as they should.
I asked the dentist if I should be worried about the infection spreading, sepsis etc. He said not at this stage as there's no abscess but I'm not convinced. I keep thinking this level of pain isn't ok especially when it's radiating around my jaw and head. As a pp said it's only a short journey to the brain. I will watch out for any high temperature, dizziness, confusion and so on.
I just can't believe how quickly it's got so bad.

You have my utmost sympathy, suffered for the last few weeks with agonising pain in my jaw, managed to get an emergency appt and my wisdom tooth has basically fallen apart, but they won't extract as like you, needs a specialist oral surgeon 🙄☹️

They shoved a temporary filling in it and I have a appt in July to be referred to the surgeon so I am now living in fear of the temp filling failing and being back in that horrible place.

I actually found some co-codamol (the really strong stuff that you need a prescription for) at the back of the cupboard from a previous dental issue and that helped with the pain, although made me feel like I had been on the vodka. Might be worth an ask?

Can they not put a temporary filling in? I can't tell you the relief when I had mine last week... actually felt like a normal human again.
