Kids party no food

Quick one

Aibu to think the recent move towards not providing party food at kids parties is a bit odd?

Just picked up DS from yet another party where no food was provided (and no it’s not a cost thing, not in this case anyway) just a doughnut 🍩.

The kids don’t care I’m sure but I wasn’t planning on doing a “dinner” tonight so had to come home and produce something from nothing because he was hungry. If you aren’t providing food then at least tell us in advance so we know!

Anyway, am I?

ps for context he is 8, appreciate if he were 16 this would all be a bit weird 🤪

Except they did provide food. A donut and a drink is fine.

In many places, it's at best unusual.

Such a weird attitude towards food on MN.

I cannot fathom a party with no food, and I do intermittent fasting, so it's not about being greedy or not going for long without food. A party is a celebration and that usually includes various types of food.

Even a selection of pizzas, chicken nuggets and some crisps would be better than 1 doughnut.

Maybe OP did really attend the jam slag party, if that is the case, condolences to both OPs, what a nightmare!

Why? Maybe the birthday kid liked doughnuts?

A drink and a donut for an afternoon snack in the middle of a party seems perfectly fine to me.

The idea that you have to provide a meal or a buffet to be a good host comes from a real place of privilege.

wizarddry · 01/06/2024 19:33

I think a lot of people have a sneery attitude from their ivory towers. A doughnut is a perfectly fine food for a child to have at a party.

And it would also cost a hell of a lot more.

For a party bag? Perfectly fine. A packet of seeds to take home - a lovely gesture. Anyone teaching their kids otherwise needs a look at their privilege

😂😂😂 she said a party bag of nice gifts that she BOUGHT while trying to justify why she didn’t provide as much as a packet of crisps. You are the one mentioning her collecting seeds and buying bulk paper fishes from Christmas crackers!

Did you miss where she said food would cost £5 per head as she wasn't allowed to provide anything of her own except cake?

Yourethebeerthief · 01/06/2024 19:35

@Youcantellalotofthingsabouttheflowers

I am simply questioning her statements. She said she sent them home with a nice gift, that is clearly not true.

... your honour.

🙄

You and your pals sound like the grabby entitled ones. Not @CammoMammo putting on a fun party for her son and his friends.

Some snacks but not a spread is normal. Why would you expect your child to have a dinner provided not just sone sweets and the cake?

No it's not!
Most kids parties provide sandwiches & cakes or a nuggets & chips type meal.
I guess if the party was at an odd time e.g 9-11 then if expect a snack or piece of birthday cake but in 12 years of kids parties that we've attended there's always been a meal!

WitchyWay · 01/06/2024 19:36

I'd fully welcome no food! They barely eat anything anyway and it's usually a crappy selection of junk food and overall is extortionate!

The food can easily cost £100 on top of the other activities, just to end up in the bin. It's ridiculous how much parents pay for parties.

As your child is 8, what did the rest of the party entail? What were the times?

Surely you could fix him up some cheese and beans on toast or a toastie with chips etc for dinner? Not hard.

Have a party you CAN afford then… like the park idea. All kids associate parties with food and snacks.

And? Those were just two examples of cheap but lovely gifts.

or maybe just from people who only invite who they can afford to host?

Inviting 40 people comes from a place of privilege. If you can't afford to provide food at a PARTY, it's weird, just lower the numbers?

That's exactly the same advice for weddings, you can't afford to host 100 guests..don't invite 100 guests?

I have more years of kids parties behind me that I would like, never once seen one with no food, or with just a doughnut or slice of cake. It seems pretty standard to serve actual party food.

Only because the parents get so wound up about it. If they stopped they wouldn't.

Weepingwillows12 · 01/06/2024 19:39

My kids have only been to one party with no meal but it was 2-4, the kids were 10 and they were doing an activity (outdoor laser tag thing). She told us up front and they had cake and drinks available. I was just grateful she was funding the activity.

I have often put on parties for my kids when money was tight but everyone was fed. That’s just manners.

Gatekeeping kids parties now. Ooh nooo can't let the poor people invite their whole class.

Edit - that was sarcasm for those who cannot tell apologies I should have been clearer.

Do you realise how privileged you sound? Especially as the kids got a snack?

Yourethebeerthief · 01/06/2024 19:43

@Youcantellalotofthingsabouttheflowers

That’s just manners.

You have a rigid and incorrect idea of what manners are.

Hint:

it's not bad manners to pay for a fun activity for 40 children and give them cake, juice and a little thank you gift.

It is bad manners to hound and bully people on the Internet.

Bloody hell, the privilege and ignorance on this thread is ridiculous.

Are you really saying that a child from a less privileged background shouldn't be able to invite all his mates to soft play because the parents can't afford to provide food on top?

They didn’t get a snack. The OP’s child got a doughnut not the 40 kids T @CammoMammo party.

Yeh, cos that other thread wasn't a total shitshow like this one with more crazies piling on the OP for having (gasp!) a party in a fucking park?!?!
