Kids party no food

Thebabewiththepowerof · 01/06/2024 17:58

Quick one

Aibu to think the recent move towards not providing party food at kids parties is a bit odd?

Just picked up DS from yet another party where no food was provided (and no it’s not a cost thing, not in this case anyway) just a doughnut 🍩.

The kids don’t care I’m sure but I wasn’t planning on doing a “dinner” tonight so had to come home and produce something from nothing because he was hungry. If you aren’t providing food then at least tell us in advance so we know!

Anyway, am I?

ps for context he is 8, appreciate if he were 16 this would all be a bit weird 🤪

Why is @CammoMammo getting such nasty replies? Confused

It's bordering on bullying for absolutely no reason, she's not even the OP FFS.

I'd like to apologise to all the parents who attended the birthday of DS1 about 10 years ago. The venue (bouncy fun and a death slide that created hysteria in 5 yr olds) did the catering....

On paper it all looked fine. Reality was the bloke who owned the venue placing 1 prawn cracker on each child's plate , then went round a placed a sandwich, then a chees and onion roll, then a piece of watermelon.... and on and on....

The owner made the error of placing the large bowl of prawn crackers down and a parent stealthily nicked it and ate them.

I think its just people who can't possibly imagine going without food for 2.5 hours

😧 No jam slags?!

Very good. I applaud you. 👏

No child needs lunch between those times. They don't even need a snack really but it's a nice to have

who said the art of hosting was dead 😂

Meanwhile, in the real world, every kid I've seen at parties between 2 and 4 enjoy the party food or "diner" at 3:30 or 4. They just won't be hungry for diner later, who cares.

It can't be healthy to be that rigid on timing even on the day your own child has a party. It certainly comes across as incredibly rude.

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 01/06/2024 19:14

Yep. Tight as fuck not to at least put out sandwiches, a bowl of crisps and some cucumber sticks plus a few jugs of squash. And you can always tell the cheapskates that hold parties at weird times like 2pm so they can avoid doing the buffet.

Couple of nutters hounding her for throwing a lovely party and calling her a liar that she requested no gifts (a common occurrence in my circle of friends anyway)

Apparently a doughnut at a party is not good enough. But a jam sandwich, packet of crisps and a biscuit is a replacement for dinner 🤷🏻‍♀️

Posters are just making things up as they go along and getting themselves angry for no reason.

@CammoMammo paid for a fun experience for all those kids and gave them a little treat gift as thanks for coming. Fucking burn her at the stake the cheeky bitch!

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 01/06/2024 19:15

@CammoMammo so don’t throw a party for 40 kids if you can’t afford to put on a proper spread? Sounds like you just wanted 40 lots of presents tbh

WittiestUsernameEver · 01/06/2024 19:15

CammoMammo · 01/06/2024 19:04

40 gifts for £25.

The venue only allows their own catering, which was £5 a head.

Wait... what "nice" gift costs 62p?

Just an indication that you can give kids a party tea for not much 🤷‍♀️

Yes, the parents were aware there would be no food because it was a 90-minute party between mealtimes.

We specified no gifts, which was respected.

To be fair, I don’t think planning a party between mealtimes means that the parents automatically know that there won’t be food

nice try

If you come up with a haughty and judgmental attitude about people serving kids party food at any time really, expect people who disagree.

Thankfully in the real world, I 've never met anyone like that.

It's very poor hosting to invite people and not provide food and drink.

Only on MN must some people have a non-medical but incredibly strict food timetable. In the real world, people can eat lunch at 11, 3, 4pm and survive.
Most of us have jobs where we can't have a fixed lunch hour for a start.

Even my kid are flexible depending on the schedule.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/06/2024 19:18

The thing is, they never eat the food! Year in year out I faff around with either platters of sandwiches or who wants a hot dog, who wants pizza, who has allergies, who is vegan...and then they take one nibble, eat some crisps, and wait for the cake!

So basically serving just a donut makes perfect sense to me, and I would never, ever rely on a party meal to sub for an actual meal.

Kids eat the sandwiches at our parties, might only be 1 or 2 triangles, so I only ever do 2 triangles per kid max. But they get eaten.

Do you have nothing better to do on than bully a stranger on the internet about her kids' birthday party?

mitogoshi · 01/06/2024 19:20

@WittiestUsernameEver

Really, who eats the at 4.30pm? Honestly I think people make things up. If a party is 3-5 I'd rather they didn't get fed junk because I'd prefer they ate a proper meal at dinner time, 6.30 in our house

This year I’m doing menu choices on the invitation, so they can choose a sandwich and 2 snacks (from a choice of crisps, fruit, babybel etc). Will put out some jugs of juice and of course there will be cake.

Except she did provide drink, as well as a slice of birthday cake for everyone @Chanelbasketballandchain .

I am simply questioning her statements. She said she sent them home with a nice gift, that is clearly not true.

That's why I said the snack was nice to have. Seriously no one should be hungry at that time if they ate before they left

Same I would rather they aren't fed a loaf of sugar
