Kids party no food

Thebabewiththepowerof · 01/06/2024 17:58

Quick one

Aibu to think the recent move towards not providing party food at kids parties is a bit odd?

Just picked up DS from yet another party where no food was provided (and no it’s not a cost thing, not in this case anyway) just a doughnut 🍩.

The kids don’t care I’m sure but I wasn’t planning on doing a “dinner” tonight so had to come home and produce something from nothing because he was hungry. If you aren’t providing food then at least tell us in advance so we know!

Anyway, am I?

ps for context he is 8, appreciate if he were 16 this would all be a bit weird 🤪

All this talk of party food has made me think about jelly. Individual little jellies made in sort of mini waxed paper fluted bowls. We always had them at our birthday parties when I was a child in the olden days. Sometimes with a little blob of tinned cream on them if you were really lucky or a bit of tinned fruit set in the bottom. Do children even eat jelly anymore?

RicherThanYews · 01/06/2024 21:44

A party without food I can live with. The parties with the ostentatious 3 tier stunt cakes that get sung over (twice) and then removed from view with out so much as a jam slag or fun size doughnut in addition to no food or drink is beyond the pale though. It seems to be the norm now.

Full spectrum CBD jellies at the park maybe

Why choose somewhere like that to have a party if your budget doesn’t stretch? Loafs more affordable options available.

This. Its not "privilege" to suggest you don't choose an expensive soft play for a party if it means its unaffordable.

You can do a good party for far less. A village hall type party can cost a fraction, including offering food.

According to @Youcantellalotofthingsabouttheflowers

Kids are not stupid

They will notice your parents haven't provided any sandwiches and it will be the talk of the school the next day. You'd better believe they'll notice your scruffy parents can only afford a village hall like a toddler's party, while everyone else is living it up at soft play and laser tag. They'll hang a sign round your neck and follow you around the playground the next day ringing bells.

How do you imagine a village hall party would cost less than a soft play party for older primary school kids? What's in this hall to entertain them?

I did a village hall party when my son turned two. They had a cupboard full of ride on toys and the like from the weekly playgroup we could borrow. Would this do for a group of 8 year olds say?

Clearly not talking about your OP

The thread is full of people frothing at the idea of a party with only doughnuts or cake and juice.

So what? Confused Why do other people views bother you so much?

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 01/06/2024 21:49

some kids want a party and their parents can’t afford it but they don’t want to disappoint their child. if the party is out with a typical meal time it shouldn’t be an issue. just feed them before or after the party.

Weird. My DC’s party was 2.30-4.30pm recently, in a private venue with a mini soft play. I was planning to serve pizza and snacks at around 3.45 but they were all really hungry 20 minutes earlier before any of the pizza was cooked. They were all seated and eating the crudités/fruit/party rings by the time I brought out the pizza!

Not a meal time sure, but playing works up an appetite!

Are you calling yourself a scruffy parent coz you did it? 😂

No I would provide my own entertainment AND food for a fraction of the cost of a foodless party at soft play where all the kids can see other party goers getting fed snd wondering why they are not when they get it at every other party they go to. Use your loaf.

Maybe it's a location thing?
I live in the UK, and of the roughly 30 parties my girls have been to and 6/7 we have hosted, there hasn't been 1 without a decent spread of food. Even ones at non meal times like 2-4pm where I have given lunch as expected them to just get a drink and a snack, there has been a full meal. Those do end up with quite a bit of waste though as the children aren't really hungry, so I have always chosen to do our parties 11-2 ish so it's clear they will get lunch, they are hungry and not much waste. Downside is that we feel need to feed the parents too 🤣

Pepsiisbetterthancoke · 01/06/2024 21:53

You mean kids these days are not experiencing the joy of sandwiches, party rings and cheese and pineapple hedgehogs?

They really haven’t lived…..

(this is light hearted by the way before someone starts to count the calories in party rings!)

Use my loaf to do what? Make jam sandwiches for the kids?

No I would provide my own entertainment

I need more info because I'm just picturing you, deranged mother of the birthday child, dancing at the front of the village hall. No music cos the sound system is too expensive. Just the sound of your trainers squeaking and shuffling on the hardwood floor.

Mine love it!
At my daughters recent 5th birthday my mum went 'full doting grandma' and spent several hours making Rainbow jellies with 7 layers of colours in little plastic pots. The children went crazy for them!

You just seem very invested in other peoples views, and very angry that other people don't think a party with no food is a good idea. Why are you so bothered what others people think? Accusing them of 'frothing' because they don't share your views. Very bizarre. Confused

The kids are FIVE! Not teenagers. You do amuse me with your really ridiculous assumptions trying to sound clever snd absolutely failing.

So any mother here who does a party with food in a village hall is scruffy snd wears trainers 😂

Hilarious.

Fair enough I can only base my expectations on what I have either done myself or experienced and it was the uptick in this approach I was more curious about. And no, I wouldn’t expect him to want more than a snack at home after because where food has been available at parties it’s been more of the pizza variety as that’s easy to portion, pretty universal and inoffensive.

However you say YABU but then go on to say that
most you have been to have food or at least snacks. This wasn’t that so you can see where my thoughts might have come from perhaps?

But you said he had a doughnut? Surely that counts as a snack?

You assume pizza, but surely not all of the parties have had that? Surely more typical party food fare is sandwiches and crisps? So your child would go from 3ishpm to the next morning without dinner?

Spudthespanner · 01/06/2024 22:02

Last years party venue provided catering and jelly pouches were included, they were very popular. Not the same though.

So glad that others are also passing on the party rings tradition to the next generation. Tisn’t a party without party rings 😂
